This was originally covered with leather, but due to the condition I had to remove it. This trunk has been carefully sanded, stained and clear coated with Tung Oil. The slat clamps are Chas T Wilt's own design(Aug. 29 1876) and latches(Patent C.A. Taylor 1878) are both made of cast iron, and much of the original Tin coating survives. There is no silver paint on this trunk. The unique Nickel plated lock works great, and a key is included. The trunk measures 30" long. 18" wide, and 22" high. Rare Martin Maier Bevel Top Oak Slat Antique Trunk 1880s
A great size trunk. 31" wide from edge to edge, 23" tall and 20" deep. This outstanding trunk is a highly sought after Victorian Slat Trunk made by Martin Maier& Co. of Detroit, Michigan. Martin Maier slat trunks are quite rare, and the bevel corner, flat top is the scarcest of the styles. These trunks were referred to as the"Rustic" style in the Maier Trunk catalog. The Pine or Basswood box was covered entirely with hardwood slats to make it very strong. Every other slat is dark wood to produce a very dramatic affect. This trunk has been carefully cleaned, restored, and coated with Tung Oil finish. The original lock is in great working condition with the key included. Original bottom rollers are in great condition. Every item has been addressed, including new stitched leather handles with the cast iron handle ... morecaps with the stars pattern. None of the wood slats have been replaced on this trunk and they are in excellent condition with only minor age wear. Complete original interior wooden tray, with covered hat box, beautiful Victorian trim and lithographs, and Martin Maier label! Antique Chinese Trunk/ Chest circa 1880. Purchased from ABC Carpet in NYC for $250. It has a metal latch and metal handles on each side. It is hand painted. It has a Burgundy background. This is very old. So it has nicks, scratches and a few cracks which add character to the piece. The interior was recently lined in burgundy colored velvet. Antique 1880s Salesman Sample Railroad/Steamer Trunk
Nice antique miniature steamer trunk in what appears to be good condition except that the top is only connected to the bottom by the strap on inside. The paper appears to be torn in many places and has some missing in spots. The trunk doesn't appear to have had a tray. There doesn't seem to be any runners for a tray to sit on nor does it appear that they are missing. There is no key to the trunk. Trunk is approx. 10" wide by 7 1/2" tall by 7" deep. Made by the Whittle Trunk and Bag company, founded in Knoxville TN in 1880. You can check the photos for the condition, but it is all basically in good and working condition, except the leather handles. Measures 15 inches wide by 17 inches tall and 26 1/4 inches long. It comes as pictured. Whatever else may have been part of it originally. Such as a cloth lining, removable tray, and a set of keys, I don't have them. The previous owner put shipping tape over the wheels. I would guess that was to make sure they didn't fall out, maybe? C713) Antique 1880s – 1890s Doll’s Dome Top Trunk, “Alligator” Metal Covering
C713) 1880s– 1890s Doll’s Dome Top Trunk Maroon& Black“Alligator” Metal Covering This 1880s– 1890s doll’s dome top trunk. Measuring 16” across by 10 ¼” tall by 9 1/8” deep, is very attractive just as it came from its attic; we wiped off with a stiff brush, outside, a soft brush inside. It is most unusual& beautiful as its outer covering is pressed tin as an“alligator” hide design done in maroon& black& with many variations in the sizes& shapes of its textured surface. Only a small lower back end has any loss of the black paint as that’s“higher” than the red. There are 3/4” wide metal bands across the dome& down the front of the trunk& 1 end of the back; there are 7/8” metal bands around the bottom of the lid’s front& sides as well as both top ends of the lid’s back& 1 lower end of the trunk’s back. ... moreAll the straps. Painted flat black, have 5/8” round tin disks with beaded edges spaced as accents or ornaments, 4 on either side of the top& front with only 1 lost on the back part of the lid. There are also 5 grooved strips of wood added, 3 on top& 1 on the front& back at the middle, all fastened on with thin ornamental tin brackets of sorts. A third of the front’s strip is lost as is that end’s fastener. These wood trim pieces each have 2 of the round beaded accents used on the black bands. The front’s lock is still here, but it has no key; above the lock is the upper part of a latch. There are also 2 round metal disks on the dome, 1 on the front section& 1 on the back; these slightly thicker ornaments have a plain raised rounded edge with a center flower of 6 small round petals. The trunk’s 2 original leather straps are gone, but their metal end holders are still here; I’m glad, especially because each has a raised union shield of stars& bars with other stars under the shields. So perhaps the trunk is older than I thought, maybe as early as the 1870’s. The diminutive handles of brown leather only measured perhaps 2 ¼” long by 1/8” thick. The bottom of

Which recently sold a similar trunk for $1,395: This trunk style was first patented by Jonathan S. Eaton of Roxbury. Mass. granted on Jan. 7, 1868. The unique feature was a trunk that is completely covered with strips of wood over a thick wooden body, making it more durable and attractive than others. In the patent description, Mr. Eaton explained that this trunk could be given a fine finish which would make it"useful even as a piece of furniture suitable for a chamber" yes, that means"room" to us) The name"Excelsior" was given to the trunk style after the patent was granted and it means"superior" or"the highest standard" The oak slat trunks were made in the U.S. but not by the Excelsior Lock Co. Which came along many years later. There are various trunks out there with locks marked Excelsior Lock Co. Newark NJ, but they did not make these trunks.
