For your consideration is a ca 1885 dome top steamer trunk. I t has been fully refinished. The originally outside canvas covering and interior paper have been removed to show the beauty of the pine wood. The wood was sanded and refinished with stain and multiple coats of sealer. All hardware is original and in excellent shape. The hinges and lid stay are strong and work properly. All hardware was cleaned and sealed. The lock does not have a key. The leather side handles are new. The bottom is clean. It has the original tray. This trunk 32" wide X 25" high X 19" deep. It has an unusual piece of embossed metal on top. The cost of packing. Graced all over with pig skin stretched tight and then painted with detailed chinoiserie figures in a garden. Note how the covering is applied to the box in a trunk style with nail heads prior to the painting. Unique and high quality brass hardware of Chinoiserie style. What we have to offer for auction brought to you by the Grand Antique Mall in Cincinnati. Ohio is this wonderful ANTIQUE IMMIGRANT TRUNK. This Immigrant Trunk dates back to 1870 as shown in photos. The trunk shows excellent pierced metal work throughout and original rivets that fasten all pieces. The top has metal work that shows names and the front of the lid also shows names. This trunk is in very good condition structurally and cosmetically. Note the hand wrought iron handles and original iron bands with applied rivets. The truck has a working lock and original key. This trunk has a great decorator look with wonderful patina and will make a great addition to your room setting or collection. Great for storage. This is a ca.1890 antique flat top steamer trunk. It is steel-covered that has been painted black and floral embossed dark green and bound with oak slats. All of the steel hardwear including the brass lock and the latches are original. The leather handles have been replaced. The key is missing. It has fancy embossed slat clamps and two fingered edge clamps. The bottom has four roller wheels. It is 30"x 18.5"x 23"tall and weighs 45 lbs. Fabulous Antique Grain Painted Cottage Chest With Flowers ca 1800's- Local P-up
Exquisite grain painted cottage chest with the best colors you will ever find! The colors work well with both dark oak and pine since they are very neutral in tone. Grain painting became popular in the mid 1800's when immigrants moved from the northern areas if the US to the west. The west didn't provide the fine wood sources if the north(maple. Oak, cherry etc) So they made the chests and furniture of pine- and often feather painted the surface to appear like the rich nice woods available in the north! The detailing on the drawers is wonderful. I posted a photo of the drawer edge because the chest drawers are put together with dowels. I also posted a photo of the top surface of the chest- it is pretty rough- but I bought it this way years ago! The originally outside paper covering and interior paper have been removed to show the beauty of the pine wood. The wood was sanded and refinished with stain and multiple coats of sealer. The metal covering. Top and front, were sanded, primed and painted with lime green paint and then stain applied to give it an aged look. All hardware is original and in excellent shape. The hinges and lid stay are strong and work properly. All hardware was cleaned and sealed. The working lock comes with a key. The leather side handles are new. The bottom is clean. It has a new tray. For your consideration is a beautiful anti que round top Civil War era trunk. It is also known as a stagecoach trunk. Based on the lock. The hand forged iron handles and the hand forged nails I believe this trunk dates to 1850-1860. Also please notice the quality. Unusual, hand cut. Dove tailed corners. This trunk is made from six solid pine boards. All sides, top, and bottom are made of a single wide pine board. The top has a couple of small cracks due to the wood losing its moisture over its 150+ years of life. It comes with a working lock but missing the key. The trunk measures 30" wide X 15" deep X 13" high. It does not have a tray as trunks during this time were not equipped with trays. Large Refinished Slightly Curved Top Trunk ANTIQUE Ca. 1890's
Up for auction to day we have a large(34.5 x 21 x 22 inches) trunk that has been refinished inside and outside. The old dried canvas was removed to highlight the wood underneath. Sanded a handful of times, then treated with natural stain, tung oil, then a few coats of satin polyurethane. The metal work was painted flat black then sealed with the poly. This trunk is heavy, about 45-50 pounds. Husband lined the inside with wood, making it nice and clean and ready to store anything you like. Great for boots, winter blankets, you name it. Trunk is a great size for under a window for plants or in the bedroom or office as a table. Being that it has a very slight curved top. Still useful for magazines, books, plants, and your coffee cup or glass of wine. Top of trunk is a different wood than the body and is lighter. This is a ca. 1885 Antique refinished metal covered flat top trunk. All parts are original. It is 28.5"x 17"x 20"tall and weighs 40 lbs. It is sometimes called a monitor or waterfall trunk. The lock is marked Pat`d April 15. 1879 and the slat caps are marked Pat`d March 1880. The key has been lost. It is clad with metal with oak slats. It is possible that it was made by Charles Taylor, New York. The interior is very unusual. It has a double tray hinged system that slides out of way on steel runners. Antique Refinished Steamer Trunk Ca. 1870's -1880's
Up for auction today we have recently refinished slightly curved top trunk antique steamer trunk that has been freshly refinished inside and outside. Dating to the 1870's- 1880's. This trunk is heavy and solid. It measures: 30 x 19 x 21.5 inches and weighs approximately 45 pounds. The dried canvas was removed to highlight the gorgeous wood underneath. The wood was sanded smooth a handful of times. And then stained with Golden Oak, then a coat of Tung Oil, and a two coats of Satin Polyurethane to seal it- a very nice smooth finish. The metal ware was not painted. Handles are still there with original end caps. Side has the initials of P.E. L, and Andover, ME on one of the slats. My sweet mom lined the inside with one of my favorite fabrics. A nice reddish gold cotton fabric- looks just amazing and ready to store blankets, linens, photographs, ... moreimportant documents, and what ever other treasures you might have. This size trunk is great as an end table or under a window for plants- with being slightly curved top, you still can place your coffee cup on it with no worries. Great for books, magazines, coffee table books, etc. The back of this trunk has added interesting hinges- these hinges look to have been added after the trunk was made. Not sure when, but they are the style that makes a trunk not need a lid stay- the top will open all the way and these hinges prevent the trunk from bending back to far. Delion measures about 17 inches wide by 14 inches deep and 15.5 inches tall This is a great historical piece that was designed to accommodate extremely fine hat(s)A Delion Chapeliers an important manufacturer and retailer of some of the world's finest hats in the 19th and 20th centuries. There are stamps(glued on paper) documenting the travels all around the trunk- more than I had room to upload photos for also many spot where the other stamps have come off It has the original handle that has come off the top. The handle itself is ripped and the strap that holds it down on one side is also missing. It definitely shows its age and use with discoloration and stains. The top looks as though something were spilled on it raising the finish of the leather? as it feels rough to the ... moretouch. The inside of the trunk is lined. I believe all the tie down straps are intact. You can also see the wear where the inside back hinges are- it still opens and shuts fine but there is break through of the lining and materials. Corners show wear as do the sides throughout the inside and out as this was definitely well used item. The handle is stamped A. DELION. PARIS, 24 BOULd DES CAPUCINES We dated the trunk by the address on the handle. I believe A. Delion operated out of this location at one time. We know that this was before 1905 as the address 24 Blvd des Capucines is one of the 4 Grand Boulevards of Paris so it is well documented. In fact. One of the most famous actresses of the 1800's, Mistinguett lived at that address from 1905-1955 which is how we dated the box to the late 1800's. This is an Antique ca.1885 Solid Oak R. Bliss. Pawtucket, R. I. three drawer Machinist tool chest. The R. Bliss Mfg. Co. was founded by Rufus Bliss in 1832. It is larger than most machinist chests, at 24"x 14.5"x 12.5"tall and weighs 25 lbs. It has an English made steel lock with working key and brass hardwear. There is a device that locks the drawers when the lid is closed. The end panels are walnut with cast-iron decorative lifting handles. There is a Bliss imprint on the bottom. Trunks of this size were first sold in the very late 1700's and early 1800's. But really didn't become popular until about 1810. Dome-top trunks became popular with travelers beause their shape required that they end up on top of the trunk pile. The domed surface made it all but impossible to stack another trunk on top, so these would usually go on top of the pile. This was very important- it meant your trunk be unloaded first upon reaching your desitination, so you could be on your was before the rest of the passengers. It's important ... moreto note that this trunk was originally covered in animal hide- most likely horse hide, with the hair still attached. Known as'hide trunks' these were popular with tavelers of the day and were made by small shops, saddlers, and blacksmiths throughout the eastern United States. The make. According to the label, was Robert Burr, who operated in Boston for several decades. Hide-covered trunks like yours were often made by saddlers in varous towns and places all up and down the eastern seaboard. a basic wooden box was constructed, and then a wet animal hide, usually horse hide, was stretched over the box and nailed in place with copper or brass tacks. As the hide dried it would shrink a little, which made the wood joinery come together tightly, adding strength to the trunk. The owner's initials were often set in into the top of the trunk with decorative tacks, and hand-forged handles were added for ease in lifting. Gorgeous ANTIQUE refinished Steamer Trunk Ca. 1890's
Up for auction today we have a recently refinished antique steamer trunk dating to the late 1800's early 1900's. This style trunk is slightly curved at the top. Very slight in fact, and useful as a coffee table, plant stand, side table or even for a printer or other electronics. The original old trunk was found with old dried brown canvas and we carefully removed it- sanded the trunk smooth, and applied natural tung oil, two coats, then a coat of clear shellac. This trunk is gorgeous and is very useful for home or office. The inside has been freshly lined with brand new cotton floral fabric. Here are a few more details: Four slats on the top. Metal hardware on edges of trunk. Brass wash on the metal. With bulbous ends- these were helpful in moving the trunk from side to side. Replaced leather handles with 100 year old endcaps. Antique Refinished Slightly Curved top trunk - Ca. 1880's
Up for auction today we have a lovely refinished antique steamer trunk. Dating to the late 1880's to 1890's. Originally covered with thick canvas, what was left of the canvas was removed to highlight the gorgeous wood underneath. This size is impressive, a perfect trunk for storing winter blankets, pillows, or other seasonal items. It is slightly curved top, so will do fine with magazines on top or a cup of coffee. The wood on this trunk is a light honey pine color- natural stain was used as well as tung oil, then a few coats of clear shellac. When I found this trunk this summer at the Brimfield Flea Market I thought it might be European. As the style is similar to trunks made during this time in France and Germany. After consulting with a few trunk friends, they told me many of the American Trunk makers were trying to copy the style ... moreof the Europeans, using brass decorative ends and small brass buttons. The edges on this trunk are leather over the canvas and for the most part is very dried and has come off. The leather that remained I used mink oil then shellaced it several times- in some spots it still is chipping off- just wanted to share that. It gives it more of a rustic look, but it is over 100 years old and is by no means brand new. The Handles are long gone and the end caps are still there. But I chose to just put in ribbon rather than take the chance with removing the delicate rivets that are used to keep end caps on. If the new owner prefers, I am happy to put thin leather straps through the end caps for more durability. The back three hinges are very special- a very unique style hinge which makes you able to open the trunk without a lid stay. This style hinge was Patented May 3, 1887- and is imprinted on each hinge with that information. Now for the inside- I just have to say WOW. For your consideration is a fully restored antique Jenny Lind/stagecoach trunk from the mid 1800's. This trunk has an embossed leather covering. The leather was in very good condition. Therefore it was cleaned and shined. There is a small amount of leather missing on the lower right corner. The brass buttons were cleaned(all original) and the metal straps were returned to their original green color. Side handles are original but one handle strap needed replacing. Antique Camel Back Victorian Era Steamer Trunk Double Lock ca. 1871 Original NR!
You're looking at a Victorian era camel/hump/domed/barrel back steamer trunk wrapped in tin ca.1871. This trunk is showing the overall wear you'd expect to see on something over a century old but I'd say this is in fantastic shape for its age. I'll describe the flaws as best I can but please use the photos provided to make your own assessment. It has a double key lock which works but is a bit tricky and. The key is present but cannot be removed from the lock(I didn't wanna pull too hard) The leather handles have torn off over the years and one wheel on the bottom is missing along with one of the decorative metal pieces on the lid. The original lidded insert(which rarely survives) is completely intact however. There is a tear in the left lid(see photos) Most importantly. It appears that no one has tried to paint, paper ... moreor modernize this in any way. The hardware hasn't been painted, the interior still has what appears to be the original paper lining(no wall paper) and the nails all appear to be original. Dimensions are: 32" width. 18" depth, approx. 26" height at the peak of the domed lid. In my humble opinion. This trunk could be displayed as-is with all of its original character or would be an excellent candidate for restoration! eBay limits the photos to 12 but if you'd like more. This trunk was originally covered with thick leather, what was left of the leather was removed to highlight the gorgeous wood underneath. This size is harder to come by in such great condition. It is not a full size trunk and it is not a half trunk- somewhere in between. Most likely would have belonged to a lady with lots of class. The trunk is very well made, solid and heavy. It is impressive, a perfect trunk for storing winter blankets, pillows, or other seasonal items. The color of the wood is on the darker side. We sanded the trunk several times, then coated it with tung oil and some Early American Stain- then a few coats of clear shellac.
