Very Rare late 18th to early 19th Century Wooden Travel Trunk
Here is an early dome top personal valise or travel trunk. The trunk is trimmed in leather with nail head accents and the interior retains a paper lining which states the maker as NATH’l B. March Portsmouth. The paper bears the date of 1810. While we were told the trunk shows earlier construction. There are leather interior straps with buckles for securing the packed items, and there is an iron lock with no key present. The domed lid has become separated from the rounded base. Up for auction is an original antique hard leather trunk. Circa 1835- 1840, made by BURR& SHAW of Providence, Rhode Island. This stagecoach trunk measures approximately 16" x 10" x 7" high. And has brass tacks all around it. They also used the brass studs for the owners initials. D. A. The trunk was acquired among many items from the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. The 101 Ranch and just a vast array of old western antiques. Without any additional provenance though, it's hard to say who the trunk belonged to. The original label inside the box. Shows Edward Burr and Bradford C. Shaw were in the business of making hard leather, boot top and hide trunks as well as valises(suitcases) carpet bags, riding saddles, gig and team harnesses. The interior tray is present and the interior is in its original fabric. It is being sold as found. The lock latch has been broken and is presently locked in place. 19th C Antique Pennsylvania Blanket Chest Trunk Early Red Paint Dovetailed
Up for you consideration is an early large sized blanket chest with bible till and original tulip shaped- bun feet circa 1820-1840. It measures roughly 44 1/2" Long by 18 3/4" Deep and stands 25" tall. It made from popular. With bread boards through tendons end, on top of chest and very finely hand-made dovetails(no nails) The original hardware(except key) are still present and working order. I believe the brass key cover and stencil were added during Victorian era to update trunk, if you look into keyhole there a layer of dust, that would indicate they were not recently done. The Bible box and interior are in exceptional clean condition. The chest is in very good condition with no splits cracks or hairlines, because it came from the"Candle Light Inn" Ronks, Lancaster County Pa Estate(they were careful on condition ... moreand no offensive or musty odors on inside. There is slight scratches to top of chest and some wear to edges, but all in all an exceptional fine example of rare large sized Pa Blanket Chest. Exceptional and Rare Antique Ind o-Balinese Chest with Mother of Pearl Inlays on three sides and on the lid. Excellent wood conditions; of the internal candle box only the lid is still there. Hinged; some inlay bits and one of the handles missing; main part of its original lock still in place. But its key ha s been lost to the ages. Width: 24.5" 62 cm) Depth: 12.5" 32 cm) Height: 16" 37 cm) including feet(3.5" 9 cm) Volume: 73 Litres(0.073 m3) Weight: 17 lb 8 Oz(8 KG) A distictive accent piece of furniture with elegant mother of pearl inlaid patterns and great historic patina. It can be used for storage or as a coffee table and similar; made of teak wood, which becomes stronger with age. It does not need much in terms of care: a water-moistened cloth is better than using any wood cleaning products. The sides are joined ... moreusing the dovetail technique. Its decoration patterns originally came into Indonesia. Especially Hindu Bali, from Gujarat, India, in the 16 th century. Later on. The m.o.p. from the eastern Indonesian seas was used for its excellent polychromatic qualities when exposed to light, especially amber sunlight. The 3 photos of similar chests inside a display cabinet were taken at a royal palace( Kraton) museum in Cirebon. Java(Peti dari Mesir' means chests from Egypt) The m.o.p. ornamental patterns were used by Gujarati craftsmen for products mostly exported to many regions from the Middle East to Southeast Asia. These patterns bear some similarity to those found in the Ottoman Empire, which was also an export destination for this kind of chests.
