Very Very Old Primitive Trunk. Original tole painting still visible on front. Hand dovetailing. Blacksmith forged handles and hardware. Measures approximate 39" wide. 27" tall, 23" deep. Look closely at pics. Looks like late 1700's early 1800's. Decorators dream item here. Definitely not perfect but great patina and weathering. I would not know how to begin to know how to ship this item. So its pick up only. I am in central Indiana. 30 miles northeast of Indianapolis in Anderson Indiana. Work, blue paper inside the box is worn and torn. Eschutcheon, key hole, from the front of the chest is missing. The lock part on the bottom section is present. Must have had fabric at one time as there are fibers on the tacks/nails on the edge of the box. Splinter of wood missing from the top edge of the box. This"dome top" immigrant trunk from Scandinavia with folk art painting. The ironwork suggests this was a dowry chest. The family name is in script. Hand hewn of pine I believe. European furniture, useful as a blanket chest. Wrought iron hardware but missing top lock. The interior is clean and has 1 inside top tray. Length is 25 inches and 17 inches tall with a depth of 14.5 inches. This is NOT as large as many trunks but quit a wonderful size. MAGNIFICENT"MOTHER OF ALL BLANKET CHESTS" GIGANTIC DOVETAILED SIX-BOARD-BOX õ Actually I think this heroic trunk is an Indonesian Dowry Chest. Or Javanese Storage Trunk(or" Grobog" in Bahasa) To my knowledge. These were the most spectacular, titanic dovetailed chests made anywhere at any time. Each side of this chest is a single gigantic slab of Teak. Cut by hand from the giant Teak trees that once were plentiful in the region. This is the Real Deal, a now rare form, and a magnificent example. The work in this piece is astounding. Every incredibly wide board is hand-planed. Revealing the rich, dark ripple of the aged teak through the subtly faceted carving. The moldings are hand-planed into the boards. The magnificent dovetails seem almost large enough to be a log cabin, the carvings lovely and tasteful subtle coloration ... moreto the wood rich& warming. The iron work is tremendous, robust, aged, hand-forged& intense. And as was the tradition, it's on these really great, large, built-in solid teak wheels! The top slab measures an incredible nearly 25" wide by 36" long in a single slab. Overall height is about 36-1/2" There are two handy compartments inside. One the full height of the interior and one with space underneath. I've been a collector of dovetailed chests for many years& I've collected some absolute beauties. This one is about the most heroic single-slab six-board box I've seen. The Indonesian Grobog chests can be very ornately carved& painted with striking colors. Indonesia is known for its amazing tradition of woodworking and crafts. I like that this one is much more simple& plain than most. And that the aged wood is allowed to be the most prominent surface. Indonesian chests like this are getting very rare. There was a time back in the 1990's when great containers of Indonesian Antiques were being shipped over. This blanket chest has been in my family for 50 years. It is an early primitive pine piece with lots of storage inside. It looks like it may have been stained red originally. Most of the color had faded. In very good condition and a real charmer. There are 3 old black burn rings on the top as seen in the last photo. This hand painted old chest is 53" long. 21" wide, 21 1/2" tall and I'm not sure what type of wood it is. It is dated 1897 and there are some names and dates written on the inside of the lid. There is wear- the paint is mostly worn off of the top. The lock has been removed and the keyhole plugged, the screws in the hinges have been replaced, there is some wormwood and the candle box has been rebuilt. The bottom"feet" have some rot and someone cut the worst off so it would sit level. Even with the wear to the wood it is still very sturdy and strong. This is a very clean great looking pine blanket chest originally made in the mid to late 1800's on Cape Cod. This chest is grain painted and has a drawer that is stained a fairly darker cranberry color. Really nice contrast to the amber color of the rest of the case. The drawer has the original brass pulls. And the hinges are original as well. The top is fastened to a board along the back edge of the case top. The hinges are recessed into the wood. Very cool. There are great square nails throughout this chest. The back is 2 wide boards, unpainted. Over all the condition is great, just a few minor nicks and scratches as you would expect on chests of this vintage. No rot or damage on the feet. The dimensions are 18.5 W x 43L x 34.5H. Very unusual 1600 century reproduction of an English"ARK" chest. The trunk chest could easily be confused as an Arts and Crafts chest with hand made construction techniques and exposed tenons and pegs. The blanket chest measures about 36" long x 18" deep x 20 1/2" tall. The tenons extend about 1" additionally on each side. The top and all sides are fastened with through tenons and pegs as pictured. The sides have lapped oak boards and the top has a slight angled"ark" type design. The chest is constructed of solid oak with what appears to be it's original finish. 19th C Antique Pennsylvania Blanket Chest Trunk Early Red Paint Dovetailed
Up for you consideration is an early large sized blanket chest with bible till and original tulip shaped- bun feet circa 1820-1840. It measures roughly 44 1/2" Long by 18 3/4" Deep and stands 25" tall. It made from popular. With bread boards through tendons end, on top of chest and very finely hand-made dovetails(no nails) The original hardware(except key) are still present and working order. I believe the brass key cover and stencil were added during Victorian era to update trunk, if you look into keyhole there a layer of dust, that would indicate they were not recently done. Hinged; some inlay bits and one of the handles missing; main part of its original lock still in place. But its key ha s been lost to the ages. It can be used for storage or as a coffee table and similar; made of teak wood, which becomes stronger with age.
