Fragments of which still remain. ... moreIf you restore this trunk, then I hope you get a leather worker to make new straps(which would look great) This trunk has Wooden(oak) Slats. Which now have a rich patina from years of use. I polished the exterior of the trunk and the slats look even better in my opinion. The lock is open and appears to be functional. But we don't have the key. This trunk includes the Till. It is covered in paper which is chipping and peeling. I would remove it if you restore the trunk. The edges of the trunk are leather. The exterior surface of the trunk is fabric over wooden construction. The fabric is well worn and frayed. With bits missing, especially along the edges. If you restore the trunk, one direction you can take would be to strip the exterior(and interior) of the covering and simply finish the wood underneath. The corners and some of the edges are metal bound. The metal has a nice dark patina. The leather handles on the ends are now gone. New leather is needed there. Inside. The fabric covering is badly stained and either should be removed and the wood underneath finished, or replaced. The interior smells musty and old, but not mildewed in my opinion. While woods are not my forte` we have a consensus that this is red oak. Weighs a ton solid in construction and has aged nicely. Dates 1800-1820 possibly earlier. Came out of PA estate. All Original hardware with the exception of the is intact with the exception of a decorative plate above the lock front. You have to examine closely to see, appears a decorative element as the original lock is there no key though. There is some minor loss to some of the decorative hardware edges top and such please refer to photos. The wrought iron handles are there and solid to lift. Antique late 1800's Excelsior steamer trunk. It is in as found condition from an attic in New Bedford. MA. The trunk is a solid piece made up with slats of wood. The top has a slight dome to it. The top section of the lock is missing but there is no damage to the area, it looks as though someone carefully removed it. There is a missing wheel and some loss to the metal strapping. Striking antique. Oval, wooden lock chest with hand-forged iron hardware. It has the date"1845" carved in the underside of the top with initials ZH and ZVSV stamped on the top and on the underside of the top. I am unsure of the origin but the area of Germany/France has been suggested. The chest was clearly built with the purpose of keeping its items secure, perhaps for traveling or shipping purposes. The chest is approximately 20.25" wide, 15" deep and 12.5" tall from the bottom to the highest point of the dome top. It weighs approximately 14 pounds. Being an old chest. It shows expected wear. It is overall very solid but does have its share of dings, scuffs, and some minor loosening of the iron band and wood bottom trim in a couple of areas. All 4 casters are still attached and are original. The top has a couple splinters in the wood, along with the bottom front but none of them are deep enough to go through to the inside. Both side handles are gone. The inside top flap can be removed, as shown in the pictures. This is a very old trunk. It has surface scratches and typical age wear! Nice solid pine wood trunk refinished at some point in its life to a clean wood finish. The metal strap trims and lock are painted black. The supporting wood trim slats that support the dome portion are oak wood for strength. The grain in the natural oak wood gives the pine wood a nice contrast. This is a perfect size trunk for your bedroom measuring approx. 29" wide x 17-1/4" x 21" tallest. The interior is also very clean. The lift out tray compartment is wood not cardboard it sits on the wood rails to hold your dainty or small items while in storage. The handles are leather they look original to me, both are present. Item 19836 is a vintage antique wooden hump back steamer trunk. It measures 30"x 15" x 16.5" It is in very good shape. The outside is all original. It still has the original wooden handles. The wood has some knots in it. But they do not take away from the character of the trunk.The inside has been lined with a mint green& red floral pattern. Item 20006 is a vintage antique woodden hump back steamer trunk. It measures 30" x 17.5" x 20.5" It is in very good shape. It has new leather handles. The lock was changed at some time prior to us buying it. There is a place on the front center bottom that has a damage spot shown in picture 2. Also there is an indented place on the top shown in picture 7. They do not take away from the character of the trunk.The inside has been lined with a green floral pattern. Antique 1838 Wooden Domed Top Oak Immigrant Trunk Sea Chest Heart Iron Straps
This is one beautiful antique oak trunk that has a date of 1838 but I think it might be older like the late 18th century just not sure. It measures 47 1/2" wide 23 1/2" deep at top. 20 3/4" deep at bottom and 28" tall not including wheels. This trunk is in Excellent condition for its age but there is a crack in side and a piece of trim missing on side also looks like a piece of an iron strap is missing at the open lid handle also someone added wheels a long time ago. The name ANNA CATRIENA JLSABEIN LANDWEHR 1838 is on the front. The iron straps are thick with a rare heart cut out design. The bottom trim has old paint hard to see looks like red and white stripes I think. Construction was done with wooden pegs and the bottom is held together with wooden dowels. Wow can you believe I have the original key and the lock still ... moreworks. I think the trunk is German but don't see and maker name. The photos do not show the beauty of this antique chest. Measuring approx. 32-1/4" wide x 18-3/4" x 20-3/4" tall. The lid is supported by a metal corner bracket that keeps the lid up nicely when the trunk is open. The wooden tray has the original metal finger lifts on each side so you can easily lift the tray out of the trunk. The inside floor of the trunk is wood but underneath the trunk is metal with the original metal rollers that act as little feet and move the trunk along easily. This piece has a lot of character I have seen people put wallpaper inside these trunks to match their room. Leave it clean wood or paper it your choice. This is probably one of the largest steamer trunks I have seen and there likely are several reasons for that. They take up a lot of room and they are big enough to be cumbersome when handling; big enough that it was impossible to get better pictures. Listing this as local pickup only because the value is perhaps higher here than elsewhere with shipping added. Many of us here are great grandchildren of immigrants who homesteaded here in the 1800s and brought much of their belongs over in trunks just such as this one except this one is a bit larger than most that have survived. Antique Steam or Stagecoach Rustic Domed Wooden Trunk
This auction contains a wonderful rustic antique wooden steam chest or stagecoach chest or whatever you call them. It is roughly 29 inches wide and 24 inches high. It is the domed type and comes with the original top tray and leather handles on the side and metal ware. I assume that this has to be around 150 years old as it is rustic but well made and has endured up to this time. If you are into antiques. This is certainly a lovely piece to add to any room. Fantastic chest, sides and bottom are made of one piece of wood like a six board chest, grungy old original reddish brown paint, great detail and character, nice patina, dovetailed joints, hand forged iron handles. It has a lock and hasp but no key so the hasp sit uneven on the lock, should be an easy fix. Very solid, tight, ready to use, some wear to the original finish. It has a chip in the bottom of one of the rear corners, looks like it had caster sometime in it's life. It measure approximately 22" long, 15" tall, 14 3/4" wide. ANTIQUE AUTHENTIC STAGE COACH 3 COMPARTMENT WOODEN TRUNK/CHEST 1840's Up for auction is this very rare vintage STAGE COACH WOODEN CHEST with 2 DRAWERS plus a secret compartment when you lift the top of the chest/trunk made of SOLID WOOD. It was actually used on a stage coach and in very good condition for its age. Shabby chic rustic and rugged. Made of solid wood and brass triming and very sturdy. There is a little paint loss on it due to its age. It looks like it was hand made as well as CUSTOM made. It is solid with no damage to it or its 2 drawers. The drawers are almost 14 inches in depth x 20 inches long x 2" wide. In good solid condition. None of the wood shows any sign of damage. Warping or shrinkage. Both drawers open and close easily. Two metal knobs are present on each drawer to open the drawers. The previous owner told ... moreus that it was checked by an expert and was made sometime during the 1840's and except for one handle on the top. Everything else is original. There is a personal gun/pistol box or a storage box specifically made to store guns. Its bottom drawer is QUITE UNIQUE. The drawer has seven raised wooden compartments in the color blue. TWO of which were designed specifically to fit pistols. The other compartments perhaps to hold ammo and anything else related to pistols or guns. Considering the fact that the trunk carried pistols and perhaps gunpowder. It is quite understandable why side handles were never attached to the trunk. Thus the trunk/chest by design does not have any side carrying handles. We are guessing here that perhaps the trunk was a salesman's trunk in order to sell pistols. That would assure the owner that the trunk had to be hand carried at all times. When you open the trunk/chest it will not remain open unless you put something underneath the top to prevent it from closing. This small size steamer trunk measures 14 1/2" wide by 10 1/4" high x 9 1/2" deep. It is constructed of wood slats with leather edges and brass corner accents. One piece of wood on the bottom appears to have been replaced. Some of the leather is very worn and cracked with some losses. The interior is stained and there is no tray. The lock is functional though the key we will send along is probably not original and requires some jiggling to get it to work. This doll chest is in good condition. It has definate aged appearance and patina. There are two areas on the inside where the wood is split to the outside(one on the top and one on the inside backing) scratches and faded areas of original black decorative decor. The bottom has a couple nails sticking out. There is rusting on the decorative brass fixtures. There is some fraying of the wood in various areas and some holes that do not protrude to the outside of the box. There are handles on either side of the box. It appears that the tray and handles were added and are not original to the chest. Very nice and decorative detail ... moreand appeal. Inside original interior paper is mostly gone. The hasp for the locking mechanism is missing, and someone added some wooden"feet" to it which can be easily detached by removing the screws. 1800's Antique Domed Hump Back Steamer Trunk Treasure Chest w/ Wooden Tray This is a beautiful Humpback trunk and is of a smaller size than the majority I see listed. The overall dimensions of this truck are: 26" wide(handle to handle) 14" deep(front to back) 17" tall(at it's tallest point) Here are some additional details on it: The center latch is offset of center and looks to use a skeleton type key(keyhole in center) to unlock. I do not have the key for this trunk The latches to either side have a patent date on them of July 9 72(1872) which is awesome to have a date of any kind on a piece like this. Leather handles on each end have long since fallen apart but replacement handles are readily available. Tin and Copper covered with wood trim and accent. Wooden insert tray. Inside of trunk and the tray appear to have ... moresome type of covering on them and the covering coming off and is dirty. I am leaving them as I received it because I know some people want the trunk in original condition and"cleaning it up" can make it less desirable. All the metal accent pieces are present and look to be in good condition when you consider the age of this trunk. All four wheel are present on the bottom. Aside from that let the pictures tell the rest of this story. Being smaller than the full size trunks would make this a great addition to someones home and/or collection. This is a beautiful antique steamer trunk. It is covered in very ornate stamped tin on all sides(and bottom) with wooden accents. It measures 30" wide x 17" deep x 23" high. Very little damage. Especially considering age. The leather straps are mostly gone, the two side latches are not functional, and one roller us missing from the bottom. Just a great show piece. Small Antique Wooden Stagecoach Trunk-Steel Bands-Marked "Darlington CH, SC"
Offered is this small antique wooden trunk with black-painted steel bands and hardware. The trunk measures approx. 25" across. 14 1/2" deep and 12" high with the lid closed. From its smaller size I would guess this was probably used on a stagecoach or possibly a delivery wagon? The trunk is in good condition. The wood has a somewhat"weathered" look but is not as light as it looks in some of the photos. There are some age cracks in the wood. Especially near the back of the lid, but everything is solid. There are of course numerous scrapes and marks from use. The handles are no longer present and it looks as if there was a small name plaque in the center of the lid. Now gone. The steel bands and other hardware. With the exception of the hinges, look to be original, and the replacement hinges match well(see photo#10) ... moreThe back portion of the band on the right side of the lid is missing. The trunk no longer latches or locks. One of the thin boards attached to the bottom is loose but still connected. The inside of the trunk has been nicely fixed up. Lined with a blue patterned cloth and gold cord(see photo#8) Probably the most interesting thing about this trunk is the bottom. It is marked with several names. Towns and other things. To me it looks like it says"Charles J. Dilling& Co. or possibly"Charles Willing& Co. and below that. Darlington CH SC" At the top the words are less clear. It looks like it says"$15" Then a name; somebody"Watt" maybe? After that I see" Wilmington" See photo#7. Darlington SC was founded in 1835 and according to its website"grew up around the courthouse" I'm guessing the town was originally called"Darlington Court House" and this dates to the early days of the town. Maybe as early as the 1840s-1850s? Although I have found references to both a Charles Dilling and a Charles Willing in South Carolina's past. Antique Round Wooden Stagecoach Trunk Brass Gold Rush Era Travel Chest Vintage
For consideration is an antique wood trunk in good condition. The trunk is embellished with square shank brass studs and is lined with a Boston paper(Gleason's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion) that is dated 1851. The former owner(an elderly woman in Southern NH) said that it was in her family as long as she could remember. Though she couldn't give additional concrete details. Her grandfather had gone to California during the gold rush, but she couldn't be sure this trunk belonged to him. On top of the trunk are the initials"B.B. Their last name starts with a"B" but her grandfather's first name didn't start with"B. She kept it in back of her rocking chair. Which is why there are scratches on the right side of the trunk. There are some holes that appear to have had brass tacks in them at some point, ... morebut they don't line up with the tacks that are currently there. It looks like someone may have taken the original tacks off and put these on. I'm wondering if there was an early refinishing of the trunk which may have required the tacks to be removed and then replaced. You'll notice that there are missing tacks on the front near the latch and one missing on top of the trunk. There are very old pads on the bottom of the trunk. Most of the hardware appears original. One of the hinges on the back is still attached entirely with old rose head nails. There are several newer(but still old) screws that have been used in repairing or reinforcing the trunk and its hardware. The wrought iron handles are period. The trunk has a nice honey color. The interior is heavily soiled and I didn't attempt to clean it as I wanted to preserve the paper lining. It's approximately 24" wide by 12" in diameter. Antique Vintage Childs Doll Wooden Dome Top Trunk. Well Made and Sturdy.
This auction is for a fascinating antique vintage childs wooden doll dome top trunk. I believe it dates from the late 1800's or early 1900's. The trunk is well made and sturdy. It appears to have its original mouldings and hardware. The mouldings are similar to those on other furniture of the era. Bits and pieces of the original leather handles and hinges are still present. They need to be replaced in order to make it fully functional again. The dome is created by five separate pieces of wood that fit together in a tongue in groove configuration and are then nailed to the tops of both sides. Although the trunk is structurally sound. It shows obvious signs of wear and use. It appears that, at some point in its long life, parts of it were lightly sanded. There is no longer a key for the lock. The wooden trunk is covered in cowhide with brass riveted leather strips throughout for decoration. It has a leather carrying handle on the top and metal latch& lock on the front. Comes with a key for the lock. The key and lock are in working condition. Interior of the trunk is lined with newspaper. Newspaper is dated 1822. This trunk was acquired from Maine. The trunk is small. Indicating it to be a child's or ladies traveling trunk. This neat and hard to find trunk would make a great addition to any early antique or trunk collection! Leather carrying handle is a reproduction but the rest of the trunk is guaranteed original. Cowhide has ... moredried with age and has cracked and flaked off in several places on the exterior.
