A rare old seamens chest as these are very hard to find now. Mid 1800s era. Lots of genuine aged character, bumps and bruises gained over its working life. Original strong rope handles through elm side blocks. Antique WILLIAMSON Military Trunk/ Gun Case/ Chest c.1890- Coffee Table Ref: This is a substancial Trunk/ Travel Chest made or retailed by WILLIAMSON& SONS who traded as a tin plate metal works in Worcester during the latter part of the 19th Century. The trunk measures approximately 41" long. Stands 11" high and is about 14 1/2" 105cm x 27cms x 37cms) and is very heavy, weighing well over 15Kgs. The trunk carries the maker's name on the hasp. The trunk is of heavy gauge metal construction. With black lacquer/japanned finish. It has a very good quality brass lock/latch which is in good working condition with key(key is probably a replacement) The latch doubles as a hasp. So can be double locked with a padlock. Furthermore, the"Staple" slides(left to right) and acts as a third locking mechanism, retaining and ... morelocking the lid at both ends. Which I understand makes it likely it was used as a gun cabinet/case, possibly for military use. Internally. The trunk retains it's original painted/lacquer finish and section divider. It also has loops, presumably for strapping contents. The lid has a leather seal inside the rim(see photos) which we assume was designed to keep moisture at bay? The trunk is physically complete. However, as you would expect for a trunk of this age, it has had some use and is showing signs of age related wear to the finish and a few minor dents etc but nothing serious(see photos) The hinges are complete an in good working condiition and the lid snaps into the open position, held by stays at both ends. As mentioned above this trunk was probably used as a gun case/cabinet and was obviously bolted either to the floor or wall. As evidenced by the bolt holes in the bottom of the case. Although well used. The trunk is nevertheless complete and an interesting example. Considering it's age, overall condition is pretty good, so there is scope for improvement, possibly for use as a coffee table or similar. A sweet Victorian style antique steamer trunk from approximately the late 1800's that was probably used for a son and a daughter when they traveled with their parents. It measures approximately 30" long X 16" wide x 19' high and it's just about the perfect size for a coffee table. It's covered with tin that's embossed with a red floral design and the tin is in very nice condition. There is some surface rust but no rust through. The flat top has beautiful hardwood slats holding the tin securely to the lid and all of the slats are held in place with brass tacks. This trunk comes complete with its original tray which has one covered compartmen, on the inside of the lid and on the cover of the compartment you'll find chromolithographs. The little girl on the inside of the lid is holding a puppy and the little ... moreboy on the compartment cover is wearing a sailor's outfit and he holds a cat. The trunk is lined with paper. The outside bottom of the trunk is covered with black tin which is held in place with 2 plain hardwood slats and it's done a good job of protecting the wood beneath because the inside of the trunk has remained nice and dry. The trunk retains a dry dusty odor that reminds me of the attic in my grandmother's home many many years ago. Most folks like to remove all of the paper inside, sand down the interior and then give it a coat of sealant which eliminates any lingering odors. Others like to line them with cedar. whichever your preference this old gal will surely be a worthy restoration project which will allow you to add additional storage to you home. I currently have a dome top trunk listed that could be this trunk's sister- it has the same red embossed tin but the chromolithographs feature women on the inside of the lid and on the tray cover instead of children. This trunk has dings. Dents, scrapes and other signs of heavy use which you'd expect to see in an antique travel trunk that had been handled as much as these were over the last 100+ years. W

I personally refurbished the outside of the trunk with the white. I have not done anything to the inside of the trunk. The trunk does have its tray. You can leave it dusty, or you can clean and polish it to make it pop. Ornate metal hardware(Victorian) Oak wooden slats. Tacked leather edges and decoration. The leather handles are still good. Canvas panel sides and top. Fabric lining over wood interior. Two divided tills as shown. This is trunk is in reasonably good condition for its age. The exterior shows the character of more than a century of age and use. Which includes cosmetic marks, scratches, scuffs, and oxidation to the metal surfaces(all of which looks cool to me) The exterior is dusty in general. There are a few missing nails and rivets. The metalwork and wood have a decent patina that would look even better if polished or restored. Some wood edges are well worn. The leather is dried and cracking in places, and is missing in other places as seen in the pictures, but I think still looks good. One of the four rollers underneath is not functional. It is marked" Paris" Has all original square nails and original hinges. No key for lock. This trunk is what was called a" paper trunk" Described in Antique Trunks book by Edelstein and Morse page 35. When the Civil war started. The trunk makers went to paper that imitated the more expensive etched leather. Because of the condition of this trunk when I got it; it was covered in contact paper and looked horrid. We stripped the contact paper out which pulled up the old 1800's imitation leather paper under it, so we we stripped all paper out and restored it to it's original wood condition. HERE IS A NICE SMALL ANTIQUE LATE 1800s OR VERY EARLY 1900s FLAT TOP TRUNK OR CHEST. THIS ONE WE WERE TOLD WAS ORIGINALLY USED ON A YATCH OR BOAT AND ORIGINAL OWNERS HAD CABINET BUILT AROUND TRUNK TO MATCH THEIR BOAT. THE HINGES. HANDLE END CAPS, AND THE LOCK MECHANISM ARE ALL ORIGINAL. THE WOOD IS IN GREAT CONDITION. WE HAVE NEVER HAD OR SEEN ONE LIKE THIS ONE. IT'S A CROSS BETWEEN CUSTOM AND FOLK ART I GUESS. THIS ORIGINALLY WAS A STEAMER OR STAGECOACH TRUNK WHICH WAS MODIFIED FOR THEIR BOAT MANY MANY YEARS AGO JUST FINISHED UP GREAT. Antique Wood& Forged Metal Steamer Trunk. Coffee Table, Chest on Wheels This trunk is complete with years of aging and patina. The original hinge of the lock is missing. The outside hinges and latches are intact and in good working order. It comes complete with handmade metal wheels. See pictures for more details. Trunk measures 28" x 18" x 21" H. The history of this trunk is unknown. I found it at an estate sale and selling as is. No Shipping- Pick Up Only.
