Found this unusual. Beautiful and untouched Leather, Iron and Wooden Victorian Era Dome Style Steamer Trunk at a local sale. A huge trunk measuring 36" wide. 30" tall and 23" deep. Decorated with hand applied tacked leather all around, ornate iron and wood, this trunk was made for folks who traveled far and for many weeks or months at a time. A TRIPLE LOCK system is evident on the front, designed to keep their worldly possessions safe. On each side of the trunk there are remnants of labels that provide a visual history of the famous places that this trunk traveled to. There is a label for a hotel in Paris. A label for a baggage cabin on a Cunard Line steam ship, and most interesting.a label for the St. James Hotel in Jacksonville Florida. Fragments of which still remain. ... moreIf you restore this trunk, then I hope you get a leather worker to make new straps(which would look great) This trunk has Wooden(oak) Slats. Which now have a rich patina from years of use. I polished the exterior of the trunk and the slats look even better in my opinion. The lock is open and appears to be functional. But we don't have the key. This trunk includes the Till. It is covered in paper which is chipping and peeling. I would remove it if you restore the trunk. The edges of the trunk are leather. The exterior surface of the trunk is fabric over wooden construction. The fabric is well worn and frayed. With bits missing, especially along the edges. If you restore the trunk, one direction you can take would be to strip the exterior(and interior) of the covering and simply finish the wood underneath. The corners and some of the edges are metal bound. The metal has a nice dark patina. The leather handles on the ends are now gone. New leather is needed there. Inside. The fabric covering is badly stained and either should be removed and the wood underneath finished, or replaced. The interior smells musty and old, but not mildewed in my opinion. This is a rare find as you don't find sole tooled leather trunks made by the Haskell Brothers Trunk Makers of Chicago very often. The original wood strips and metal"feet" are in good working order. The lock was made by Excelcior Lock and has a patent date of 1864. There is a key which"almost" turns the lock and guessing some lubrication may fix it? I have done nothing to the leather except wipe the dust off. Straps are missing and one handle and strap retainer is inside the trunk. One end is stenceled'Rochester. Minn' Neat trunk which could be used to store bedding at the foot of your bed or even a coffee table(no inside odor) If refurbished it would make a nice travel chest on the back of your vintage automobile. Antique American Leather over Wood Society Trunk - Late 1800s
Offered- An outstanding Leather over Wood Society Trunk. The trunk is in extremely good condition- with just a couple of minor flaws. The trunk measures 18 inches across- 10 inches wide- and stands 11 1/2 inches tall. Trunks of this nature were widely used during the Victorian era- to hold Society Hats and other paraphernalia associated with that particular Society. This trunk is marked: photo#10) G.O. Gordon Lodi. Wis. Robert Macoy(Cross- 3- Period) I do not know which Society the Cross and 3 represent. The interior of the trunk is Cedar Wood. There is a form to hold the Society Hat- and a drop down inner lid to hold other accessories. There are a couple of cracks in the Cedar lining. There is a label on the inner lid that reads: The M. C. Lilly Company Manufacturers of Military and Society Goods Columbus. Ohio There is also a silver colored ... moreplaque over the lock with the above manufacture noted. The leather on this trunk is a beautiful Amber/Medium Brown color- with a darker brown outline. The stitching is perfect and all of the rivets are 100% intact. There are very heavy duty Black Metal Hinges with a patent date of 1866. The leather is in very good condition- as the photos reflect- with scuffing and/or scraping commensurate with age. The silver colored lock is fully intact however I do not have the key. The lock is marked: Pat. April 1877(Over 2 Stars) The leather handle is perfect. As is the case with trunks of this nature- the straps that connect to the buckles on the front are used and very fragile. They are intact but do have breaks. I have taped the backs for stability. Also- the left front leather loop that holds the top leather strap in place is missing- please see Photo#9. This is a very nice item- I have a couple of these trunks in my personal collection and they are great for storage- perfect for fragile Christmas Decoration. ANTIQUE Leather Trunk-Orig Fabric Lining+Tray w SOLID Leather~Went Paris to NY
ANTIQUE I just returned from a weekend antique shop fest. We saw one like this in every way but the color of that one was very faded. They were asking $850.00 and at auction we saw one sold with NO interior finish or tray. No hardware and a funky odor( LOL) sell for $445.00 Gorgeous leather steamer trunk. This has clean working brass latches. 2 original leather straps on the ends and 1 handle. Exterior wooden strapping and leather bumpers on the corners. Remarkable beautiful original fabric lined interior with a lift out tray and fabric tie downs. What we assume is the maker tag is mostly worn away. But we show it in case you can ID it from the scrap remaining. There are a couple other applied tags. We can see this traveled Paris to NY via Fast French Line Steamers. Some other words are on this label but we cannot make them out. This label ... moreappears on the trunk in 2 other places, discrete and aged. There is another label with Cie Gle Transatlantic on it. Nothing to pinpoint year or ownership. The ends of the trunk have a lovely ink tattoo with a 3” A and P on them, my guess is that was the owners initials. This is 22”x38”x13” plus a hair on each increment to allow for the 3D texture of the brass hardware. The bolts are not flush to the leather. They are raised and domed. Inside has a beautiful wine+ blue colored Iris floral pattern. Tray is about 4” deep and lifts out completely. NO ODOR! No fade. I do note a bit of wear and slight tear on the underside of this tray. Nothing at all ugly or something you see unless the tray is turned over( pic 10) Tray sides have a handle on each end and 2 strap tie downs. Exterior condition is amazingly clean and solid. Nothing broken. Gouged or stained. Certainly some travel signs, but they add to the charm and again there is nothing ugly looking what so ever. We see 2 very mild leather splits, but they are still very firmly in place. This weighs about 30# before packing. Rare Old Antique Nathan Neat Leather Box Primitive Folk Art Trunk c1830s
Up for sale is a rare antique leather box made by Nathan Neat Co. out of Boston. MA. Box was made between the 1820's- 1840's. The exterior of the box is covered with dark brown leather secured by brass tacks. The interior is lined with its original printed wallpaper, with the original label on the inside of the lid. This is an early ca.1880 ladies stagecoach half trunk. Sometimes called a hat trunk. It is embossed leather-covered with hardwood slats with decorative brass buttons. The brass lock mechanism and key are original. The leather front straps and the end leather lifting handles have been replaced. The interior is complete with a lift out tray and a drop down bonnet box with lid and lovely victorian lithograghs. It is 20"x 16"x 19"tall and weighs 30 lbs. Antique 1850's Civil War Era Robert Burr Leather Stage Coach Chest Trunk
Up for auction is an incredible attic found. Rare Robert Burr, signed leather stage coach truck in original condition. This was recently pulled from a family home attic crawlspacee and was FULL of family history documents from the 1850's-60's, some of the contents are included with the sale. This is a beautiful surviving example of Boston's Robert Burr Trunk Manufacturer. I am seeing this called an officer's Ditty Box. This trunk has hand tooled designs on the top and is decorated with brass tacks all over in wonderful primitive designs including the initials of the owner Gilbert Jillson of Woonsocket RI. There is a wonderful clean manufacturer label and a secret compartment. The leather is still in relatively good condition but the straps are partially missing. Photos show the condition. I don't see any repairs. This ... moretrunk measures 27" wide x 15" deep x 12" high. Under the lid there is a compartment that is opened by removing a wooden stick through cloth straps. This compartment opens and can fill the top possibly with clothing or documents. I don't know. The lock is brass and has a large leather protecting flap that would be strapped shut. No key but the lock appears to most likely work. This truck was full to the top with family history including Civil War tin types. Land deeds, love letters etc. Included with the trunk are a few interesting documents. There is a Woonsocket RI Patriot newspaper from 1865. Communication letter to a land buyer stamped and dated 1854, an advertizing postcard for Animal Veterinary Surgeon Levi Wilson, 1857 complete original land deed and original 1858 land survey. Two chestnut colored leather straps cut from cowhide 1 1/4" wide by 8 inches long. Thickness is 1/4" Four brass plated metal strap ends. 1" long split head brass tacks to nail the leather to the trunk. Tacks are to be placed two per end under the position of the metal strap ends in a verticle position for best attachment. Form the permanent handle loop to suit before completing the nailing. Split head tacks 3/4" are to fasten the metal strap ends. Antique Civil War Soldier Jenny Lind Trunk Rare Stamped Eagle W/Key in its talons E.T. Fitch is marked on the side also has markings to a new haven Railroad on the sticker on side. Trunks is all original as found condition a great reenactment piece. The lock has an eagle stamped with a skeleton type key in its talons it may have been a military issued trunk. I've found and sold over 200 jenny lind trunks this is only the 2nd I've ever seen with an eagle stamped into the acorn shaped door over the keyhole. It's in good condition for its age both handles are still on it and can be used to carry the trunk. For a real piece of American history this may just be your trunk. Antique Trunk Hardware-Leather Handles-2 straps, 4 Metal ends-& fasteners-YA
Two chestnut color leather straps cut from cowhide 1 1/4" wide by 81/2 inches long. Thickness is 1/4" Four brass plated metal strap ends primed and painted black. 1" long split head brass tacks to nail the leather to the trunk. Tacks are to be placed two per end under the position of the metal strap ends in a verticle position for best attachment. Form the permanent handle loop to suit before completing the nailing. Split head tacks 3/4" are to fasten the metal strap ends. The handles measure approx 10 1/2" metal end to metal end with the handle loop but can be shortened by cutting a bit off of the leather strap if required to fit. free postage

Victorian Leather Steamer Trunk Antique Chest 1854 - 1860 Ex Original Features
Victorian Authentic Leather Steamer Trunk This 150-year-old antique leather-covered trunk dates to the 1850s or 1860s and is distinctive in its well-preserved tooled leather covering with diamond and square embossed designs. One of the larger trunks of its era. The leather dometop measures 34 inches long, 20 1/2 inches wide and stands 25 inches tall at the peak of its dome. The leather covering is in excellent condition. The interior is clean, and although it is heavy, it rolls easily on two original and two replacement rollers. Importantly. The original leather handles are in excellent condition- a rare find for any antique trunk- and it features the authentic working key for the brass locking plate. The trunk originated in Lovell. Mass. and in its original condition featured two interior trays covered with paper, a paper-covered interior ... morelid compartment with drop down stationery door, and Victorian lithographs. The artwork on the lid compartment door showed a couple dancing in a rural outdoor setting. The other lid art depicted four ladies in Victorian gowns, presumably attending a dance or party. Unfortunately, the condition of the paper lining could not preserve the original artwork, but photocopies of the lithographs and blue ribbon trim are included in this sale and could be used for reattachment, if desired. The trunk’s exterior had two leather belts and buckles(one leather strap is missing- the trunk's only flaw) and a working brass lock plate and key. A tag about the size of a business card and bearing the name of perhaps the last owner was tacked to one end. The tag was penned by hand and read: Mrs. Wm W. West St. Louis Missouri When the tag was removed. The reverse side was imprinted with the name"Chauncey, 10 Dearborn Street, in script type. But the remainder of the address, if any, is missing. This could be the trunk’s manufacturer. Or just a merchant’s card that Mrs. Smith used to label her trunk for identification. Title: Early Antique Leather Stagecoach Trunk Raymond S. Lister Trenton. MI Description: Presented for your consideration is this interesting early antique stagecoach trunk. The trunk is leather with a wooden interior and metal latches on the front. There is also a leather carrying handle on the front. A diamond design is in black on the front and a cross-like design is on the top of the lid and the bottom of the trunk. One side of the trunk is marked with"Raymond S. Lister Canton Trenton No. 39 P.M. Trenton. Mich. Latches on the front easily move and the lid is easy to open and close. Interior has a strap across the underside of the lid but needs to be repaired. This trunk is a stagecoach trunk but could have possibly been a child's stagecoach trunk. This neat trunk would make a great addition to any antique or trunk collection! ... moreAs stated above one interior strap needs repair and the other is missing. There is some small white stains on the lid of the trunk. Some of the leather is missing from the edges and bottom of the trunk. Some wear to the leather from age and use. Antique Dome Top Oak& Leather Bound Steamer Trunk Coffee Table with Double Tills 34" wide x 19-1/2" deep x 27-1/2" high overall Here's a super nice antique dome top trunk. Bound in oak and leather with canvas ... morepanels and two interior tills. It looks like a treasure chest to me. I left it uncleaned and unrestored, just the way I found it. You can leave it dusty, or you can clean and polish it to make it pop. Ornate metal hardware(Victorian) Oak wooden slats. Tacked leather edges and decoration. The leather handles are still good. Canvas panel sides and top. Fabric lining over wood interior. Two divided tills as shown. This is trunk is in reasonably good condition for its age. The exterior shows the character of more than a century of age and use. Which includes cosmetic marks, scratches, scuffs, and oxidation to the metal surfaces(all of which looks cool to me) The exterior is dusty in general. There are a few missing nails and rivets. The metalwork and wood have a decent patina that would look even better if polished or restored. Some wood edges are well worn. The leather is dried and cracking in places, and is missing in other places as seen in the pictures, but I think still looks good. One of the four rollers underneath is not functional. ANTIQUE EARLY 1800's LEATHER COVERED BRASS STUDDED WOOD BOX VINTAGE 19TH C. TRUNK A rare original. Early 1800's, small trunk or document box that is covered in leather and has brass studs. It has a lock in the front and a brass handle on the top. The inside of this trunk is what I love about it! There is the original paper lining with a printed man, in a top hat, riding a horse(of the period, see photo) The lid is held in place by the leather construction and there were never any hinges. This wonderful old trunk measures approximately 13" across x 6 1/2" wide x 5" tall(not including the brass handle) I have taken close up photos to show the condition. There is wear to the leather with one side missing most of it(see photo) The rest is crackled and may have a bit missing, here and there. It is missing some of the brass ... morestuds and the paper on the inside does show wear and tear. This old trunk is over 200 years old but is still mostly together!
