vintage art deco jewelry cigarette box with phenolic bakelite YZ bird figure size: 4.25 x 3.25 x 4.25" condition& details: very good condition for age. box is wooden with what looks like bakelite panels on the outside however these look like they have some kind of lacquer over them- there is no colour when tested with simichrome. there are a few areas on the box where the exterior panels has very slightly come away from the wood. looks like box would have originally been a vivid green but it has discoloured with age. More so on the lid than the main box. there is a small split where 2 pieces of the resin meet on the lid- there are a few flea bites along the left edge of the lid. there is a small crack- 0.5" length- on the front right corner of the main section of the box. This area is completely solid and is only visible when ... morethe lid is open- inside the box is clean with no bad smells. there are a couple of small rust spots to the hinge but the hinge is in good working order. the bird is in very good condition with no chips. When tested with simichrome he gives off a nicotine colour typical for bakelite. looks like he has glass eyes. there appears to have been some kind of varnish/lacquer over the bird which has worn away in places. looks like the bird would have been glued on at some point. He can be removed at the moment but does sit very firmly in the hole in the top of the lid. branded on the base'YZ trade mark made in england' detailed pics are available on request. Deco green amber butterscotch phenolic bakelite catalin jewellery box 607g
I've never seen this shape box before. It really is stunning. The lid and sides are made up of panels of swirled green phenolic whilst the finial, end blocks and base are all of a darker tortoiseshell/amber phenolic. It may be that a good clean will bring up a brighter colour but it looks wonderful the way it is. There are no cracks or major chips but the base panel has warped quite a bit and one end droops down- you can see the effect most in the second and third picture. It may be possible for someone to heat this panel and bend it back up to level but again. It looks great despite this. The underside of the base is scored roughly and there is glue residue from what was probably a blue felt bottom; you can see all the screw holes holding it all together. The whole thing weighs 607g and it measures 21.5 x 9.5cms; it stands 5.5cms high ... moreto the top of the finial. There are two holes on either end that would have once held a chrome or phenolic decorative plug to keep the lid from sliding out of position. These are now gone but could readily be replaced I'm sure. There are a couple of small shallow chips around these holes but certainly nothing to detract. Please note that all parcels. Stunning amber phenolic bakelite catalin deco dressing table set tray pots etc
A very beautiful dressing table set consisting of a tray. Two lidded powder type pots and a fabulous barrel shaped trinket box. The black material is bakelite I think. Though it does give off a faint chemical smell when rubbed. The amber type material is of course phenolic. The tray measures 28cms x 17.5cms and is in super condition. No damage to the phenolic gallery or little feet. There are scuffs and signs of wear to the black base and some light mottling of the surface too but certainly nothing that detracts at all. The two little powder pots measure 6.1cms across and 3.7cms high not counting the black lid. There is some mottling to the surface of the black as in the tray and a couple of little fleabites around the lid edge but again. There is nothing to detract. They have pink lucite like bases. The barrel trinket box 7cms high to the ... moretop of the lid and it is 8cms long- it is in really great condition. It is not too often that complete little sets like this turn up and it will look wonderful on a piece of period walnut or maple furniture. All parcels will be sent requiring a signature on delivery.

A Pair Antique Art Deco Amber Butterscotch Phenolic Bakelite Door Handles-Lot 1.
This Pair of Antique Art Deco Vintage Phenolic Bakelite& Chrome Door Handles date I believe to around 1930 or thereabouts. The Door Handles are Lot 1 of 4 Lots that I am listing today. The Door Handles measure approximately 6.75x1 inches and with the fixings will stand approximately 1.5 inches proud of the Door. They are free from chips or cracks but I have made no attempt to clean them. Any very minor signs of wear are commensurate with age and use. And basically consists of tiny paint specks here and there where the previous owner neglected to remove the Handles from the Door when decorating. And very minor colour variation. Deco Chrome bakelite & phenolic inkwell perpetual calendar pen stand
This is a nice item of good quality manufacture; it has some issues but it's still a looker. The base is a gorgeous treacle/ tortoise shell coloured phenolic type material. It is 20 x 13 x 0.9 cms and there is no damage to it. It does give off a weak chemical smell when rubbed. The chrome fixtures are in nice clean condition but the lid to the inkwell has lost it's plate. Apart from some tiny indents here and there, the glass cube itself is in nice, sharp condition. There is surface wear to the calendar also but no structural damage. There is wear to the date and day rolls inside and one of the rolls has come off. The inkwell can be removed of course by taking off the green felt base to unscrew it but I'm going to leave it as it is.

Classic Art Deco shape. Note: Catalin" is a trade name for a thermosetting polymer developed when the American Catalin Corporation took over the patents for Bakelite in the late 1920's. As a material. It was similar to other Bakelite resins although a different manufacturing process made it more suitable for casting. A set of 6 sundae dishes or bowls; they are chrome plated and have butterscotch coloured phenolic handles. There are no dents or other structural damages but there are some scratches and flake wear to the wells of some of them and occasionally on the bottom rim. So. They're not perfect and do show their vintage but nevertheless they are a great looking and eminently usable set of dishes.

Stunning deco cherry wine red tray with amber phenolic catalin bakelite handles
A fantastic deco period tray measuring 46cms x 30cms. The base and rails are a lovely deep wine colour. I'm not sure what the material is, some sort of early composite board that has been coated perhaps? Anwyay, it looks great though it does of course show signs of it's age via scuffs and some light scratching here and there but I'm sure it will polish up nicely and these few marks won't detract at all. The sides are punctuated with amber phenolic pieces all the way around. There are some small rough areas on the odd edge but nothing serious; this really is a great item and would be great to help display other, smaller phenolic items maybe.
