Franz Xaver Bergman(or Franz Xaver Bergmann) 1861–1936) was the owner of a Viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronze Oriental. Erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical, humorous objects d'art. Noted for his detailed and colorful work, and usually signed with the word: Geschutzt" His father Franz Bergmann was a professional chaser from Gablonz/Bohemia who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son Franz Xaver Bergmann(1861– 1936) inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his fathers workshop. He was not a sculptor himself as often described wrongfully. There were many anonymous sculptors. Hired temporarily by the workshops. An early 20th Century Austrian onyx dish or cendrier with cold painted bronze mount modelled as two pheasants. The pheasants are joined on a naturalistic style base and their bodies have painted details and red flashes to the faces. The dish is of green onyx and the birds are mounted via the threaded bars. The holes being covered to the base by stickers. This item dates to the 1920's. There are no makers marks which is quite typical of these items at this period. At an early age John knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up. He wanted to be an artist. His parents. Anton and Frieda, did everything they could to discourage him. They felt that all artists starved in attics. When he left the New York public school system, his father made him take a job with an insurance company as a clerk. He hated the work and longed for a career in the art field. In 1888 he enrolled in the Metropolitan Museum of Art School. In April the following year.
