Unique piece of vintage, primitive, Mexican folk art that feels like a brick material. It depicts three Colima dogs around a central pot or bowl. The clay pottery has a warm burnt umber and terracotta color. It measures approximately 9" wide by 8" tall by 3" mouth diameter at the rim of the bowl. It is in good shape but one of the dogs necks has a visible crack. I personally don't think it affects the wonder of this piece at all. I'm not certain of its age. There are no identifying marks on this piece either. Great find for your Mexican Folk Art collection or southwestern decor. This is a fairly heavy piece so postage will reflect that. The clothing of a traditional Kuna woman consists of a printed blue cotton wrapped skirt. Red and yellow headscarf, glass beaded arm and leg bracelets. Gold nose ring and earrings. The most iconic aspect of the female Kuna clothing is the colorful blouse consisting of a pair the several layered and finely sewn mola panels. The artistry of a mola reflects designs from both traditional Kuna culture and design influences from the external mass media world. Mola designs are often inspired from imagination and from modern graphics such as political posters. Labels, pictures from books, etc. Geometric molas which are the most traditional. Have been developed from ancient body painting designs and have their origins in Pre-Columbian times. Molas are a source of supplemental income for Kuna women and a source of pride and skill which helps to reinforce Kuna ethnic identity. The 2 of the curved plaques measure 1 1/2 inches x 2 inches. 2 measure 1 inch x 2 inches and the 5th measures 2 x 2 inches. The closure adds an additional 1/4 inch to the circumference. The Shipibo(ape men) and the Conibo(fish men) they eventually became one distinct tribe through intermarriage and communal ritual and are currently known as the Shipibo-Conibo people. For your consideration I have a great looking vintage example of Shipibo-Conibo pottery from Peru which is in excellent condition. It was acquired at an estate sale a few years back. I was told that it was acquired on a trip to Peru in the 1960s. aside from a small nick in the glaze on the rim and another small nick on the ear both which could easily be touched up. Rare Early Large Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Morning Glories
Tuttu(Morning Glory Flowers) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is not your typical 1960s mola. The design and workmanship indicate an early date- as does the use of very lightweight loose balanced plainweave cotton for the base layer. The large size(22" is another sign of a possible early date- I'm guessing 1950s or earlier. The flower design is also not common and has a fluid. Painterly quality to it. Note the openness of the channels of dark cloth outlining the flowers. A pretty special piece. There are areas of the base cloth where the thin fabric has lost wefts or thinned out to nothing, but they are not very noticeable. Kuna Mola collected by Kit Kapp- Nusa Pokwa(Two Rats) Rats are very much despised by the Kunas- so why not use their images to decorate one's clothes! Here we have two very large rats on a very large mola- probably made in the 1950s or early 1960s. Note the minimal use of slit-motif fillers- instead most of the fillers are large abstract motifs. Museum Quality Kuna Mola Blouse - Chickens - ex Parker Neal Collection
Museum Quality Mola Blouse- Colorful Chickens- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This blouse is a great example of a late-1960s mola- made in a time period some call the golden age of mola making. Late 60s molas exhibited much better sewing and cutting skills than earlier pieces. But had not yet developed the overly-precise quality(sort of paint-by-numbers precise) that became popular in later years. This example appears to depict a rooster on one side and two hens on the other(though it may be a two-headed hen- something that is not unprecedented- note two heads and two feet! I bought this mask over 10 years ago in Maine they were selling the contents of newscaster Walter Cronkite's summer home in Maine The mask measures Seven and three quarters long 6 inches wide and three and a half inches deep it does have a very small chip please see photos but does not detract from the beauty apparently this was part of his art collection as we all know Henry J Soulen 1888/ 1965 Was a well-known illustrator from Charleston village Pennsylvania Who was on the same level as Norman Rockwell And other famous illustrators like Andrew Wyeth. This beautiful artifact. Ceremonial necklace was brought in to my store on consignment recently. It is the certainly the most exquisite example of Pre-Columbian Mayan Jade I have ever seen. The color is consistent throughout all beads, a beautiful marbled green with some blueish undertones. My client, a native of Guatemala, is a long time(50+ years) collector of South American artifacts, and has several museum quality pieces. This piece was passed down from her father, also a collector and one time museum curator. The overall length is about 15.5" The largest ax focal bead is about 1 3/8" long, and 1 1/8" wide and 1/4" thick. The Roundell beads graduate from about 3/8 to 3/4" across. RBISM Pre-Columbian Rock Sculpture on custom made steel stand This item comes from an old collection dating to the late 19 5 0's. I am selling this for a 92 year old gentleman who has come to the end of his li fe and w ishes to part with all his treasures. He and I have been doing business together since 2007.we are a t the last few items now. This sculpture was one of Lyndon's favorites b ecause of the way he found it. Lyndon acquired this item in the very southern city in Mexico in the early part of the 1960's. He was lost in the jungle and came upon this small village where this sculpture and a few other items were found by Lyndon. He made purchase of them and took them home to West Hollywood. California. Lyndon had moved to Mexico to write a book with his wife and child in 1957. The sculpture meas u res 12 inches tall by 6 ... moreinches wide by 4 inches deep and w eights 16 pounds Lyndon traveled all over the world. He purchased antiquities in each country he visited. I will be listing the last of his items which are a mix of many interests from many countries. You see. Lyndon was a salesman for the company th at made Teleprompters.
