Panama) This mola was just purchased in March of 2013 Some others were collected from the island of Aligandi. The home of the Kuna rebellion which helped to establish the Kuna Komarca as an ... moreautonomous indigenous governing territory in the Republic of Panama. The focus of this trip was to look for the older seredi, pre 1950’s molas and wooden healing figures or dolls called nuchus. I did however make some exceptions and bought only a few of the more recent molas when they exhibited a balance of extraordinary. Quality, motif and color or imagination. This was one of them. The clothing of a traditional Kuna woman consists of a printed blue cotton wrapped skirt. Red and yellow headscarf, glass beaded arm and leg bracelets. Gold nose ring and earrings. Museum Quality Kuna Mola Blouse - Chickens - ex Parker Neal Collection
Museum Quality Mola Blouse- Colorful Chickens- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This blouse is a great example of a late-1960s mola- made in a time period some call the golden age of mola making. Late 60s molas exhibited much better sewing and cutting skills than earlier pieces. But had not yet developed the overly-precise quality(sort of paint-by-numbers precise) that became popular in later years. This example appears to depict a rooster on one side and two hens on the other(though it may be a two-headed hen- something that is not unprecedented- note two heads and two feet! Mola Blouse With Whale and Turtle Spirits- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Wild and colorful. This complete mola blouse portrays the spirits of a whale and a turtle- depicted in the form of birds- rising out of the back of the two creatures. The designs of the animals and spirits is really fun with a lot of hard-to-execute small diamond motifs, circles and bullet-shaped motifs. Note the cool hair on the whale's spirit bird(one side only) and the cool embroidered bird-eyes. The secondary plant motifs are also interesting. Great provenance. The panels measure a little over 14 in. by 16 in. Condition– noticeable soil on the yellow fabric especially around the collar; one small pull in one of the sleeves; a few other loose threads here and there; color in the panels is quite fresh so this item has probably been washed very little. Early(1950s-1960s.maybe 1940s) Kuna Child's Blouse. Abstract Bird Design. This one's a challenge. The rare. Highly-abstract design, the skinny sleeves and fairly early cloth all indicate a possible early date- maybe even 1940s. But the thin outlining and high-level craftshmanship would argue for a later(1960s) date. I think it could be either- because a number of 1940s molas with fine workmanship are known. Sikwi Galu(Birds' Spirit Fortress) Kuna Mola Blouse. The green-black-red color combination of this mola blouse works very well. Delivering a strong graphic impact. Note that the birds on one side use a different red cloth than the jungle-maze that forms the galu around them- so that over time the cloth faded to a pinkish red that makes the birds really jump out of the design. Archaic Insect Men( Kuna Mola. The abstract two-legged creatures in this mola look a lot like human beings. But their simple rendering and odd faces(horse-like mouths) and weird poles that seem to protrude from the tops of their heads all sort of say"huh? I'm fairly baffled. They could be Nia(devils) And the imagery is somewhat similar to a"noh" frog) design used in some older molas. But it is a mystery. Quite stunning graphics. 1973 Kuna Mola Blouse From Huber Collection: Alphabet
Early 1970s Alphabet Mola Blouse Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. Many Kunas have attended local schools. Where one of the first things they learn is the alphabet- which then serves as inspiration for mola blouses like this one. Pretty nice integration of abstract motifs around the letters to make them sort of"fit into a jungle. Mola panels measure 15" x 13.5" The Huber Collection. Bob and Marianne Huber started collecting molas in the late 1960s. And went on to make a documentary film about mola making in 1973. An exhibit of Kuna art from the Huber collection was exhibited at several European museums including the British Museum. Vingage Mola Blouse with Happy Dog Design. This blouse is a bit of a mystery. The mola panels would appear to be from the 1960s or 1970s. But the huge puffy sleeves are more in tune with the 1980s. My guess is that a Kuna woman"updated" the molas by adding a more modern yoke/sleeve combination. I like the goofy dog's face. Nice"no-slits" design with lots of abstract filler designs. It was loved, and worn, a lot- faded but still shows pretty well. Vintage Kuna Mola Blouse - Devil Politician
Nia(Devil) Politician Mola Blouse. Probably from the late 1960s or early 1970s. The blouse depicts a pretty scary Nia with giant teeth, curled horns, webbed feets, tail feathers, a fancy embroidered tie and a Panamanian flag- which makes him the scariest form of devil, a politiican.
