Museum Quality Kuna Mola Blouse - Chickens - ex Parker Neal Collection
Museum Quality Mola Blouse- Colorful Chickens- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This blouse is a great example of a late-1960s mola- made in a time period some call the golden age of mola making. Late 60s molas exhibited much better sewing and cutting skills than earlier pieces. But had not yet developed the overly-precise quality(sort of paint-by-numbers precise) that became popular in later years. This example appears to depict a rooster on one side and two hens on the other(though it may be a two-headed hen- something that is not unprecedented- note two heads and two feet! Note the spectacularly beautiful morsana strip across the top and the use of green corduroy for the yoke. Wonderful piece. Great execution, superb sewing, excellent condition. Great provenance. Ann Parker and Avon Neal were a couple who teamed together to write a number of books on folk art. They made numerous trips to the San Blas Islands, starting in 1965. Their focus was on"story telling" molas, with a particular emphasis on acculturated molas that found their inspiration in western culture- magazine ads, billboards and comic books. Kuna Indian Child Mola Blouse-Panama #25434
If you have questions. Please feel free to call me on Skype. Click on the images above for larger views) This child's mola blouse measures 9" shoulder to shoulder and 9" down the front. The base of the mola area is 12" Folks. I don't know how to measure this thing but I can discribe it. It's a neat sun dress for a very small young girl. It's got some ties on it to keep the wind from blowing it off. It is unique. The Mola Story A short 30 minute flight from Panama City will take you several centuries back into the past. As you visit the San Blas Islands of the Kuna people, who still keep their old lifestyle and traditions. The Archipelago is composed of over three hundred islands. Some inhabited, some not, some named others remaining nameless to this day, all of them surrounded with crystal clear waters. It is ... moreParadise found. The Kuna people wear dresses adorned with hand made molas. As well as colored bead ornaments on their wrists and ankles. Chains, pectorals, a red headress, and gold noserings complete their every-day attire. Your adventure at San Blas could be a stay at an uninhabited island. A fishing tour, dancing and traditional rites, diving and spear-gun fishing, the enjoyment of the crystalline waters or merely the peace of a hammock swung by the wind. But to complete your visit you will undoubtably purchase a souvenir mola to remember your adventure. Molas are undoubtedly the most famous art produced in Panama. The Kuna women have been sewing these works of art for years. They incorporate them into their clothing. Usually with one mola serving as the front of the blouse, and another for the back. The mola is often described as a reverse appliqué. For each color of cloth that you see there is a piece of cloth of that color sewn into the mola. Each mola is hand-stitched with thousand of stitches. The theme of the mola is determined by the imagination of the artist. Once assembled. They are placed on both the lower front and lower back of a blouse. These colorful blouse
Kuna Mola Blouse - ex Parker Neal Collection - Whale and Turtle Spirits
Mola Blouse With Whale and Turtle Spirits- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Wild and colorful. This complete mola blouse portrays the spirits of a whale and a turtle- depicted in the form of birds- rising out of the back of the two creatures. The designs of the animals and spirits is really fun with a lot of hard-to-execute small diamond motifs, circles and bullet-shaped motifs. Note the cool hair on the whale's spirit bird(one side only) and the cool embroidered bird-eyes. The secondary plant motifs are also interesting. Great provenance. (probably vintage) Kuna Indian MOLA Blouse with Fish & Crab lightly used Panama
The panels measure a little over 14 in. by 16 in. Condition– noticeable soil on the yellow fabric especially around the collar; one small pull in one of the sleeves; a few other loose threads here and there; color in the panels is quite fresh so this item has probably been washed very little. Maybe never. Textile art/ reverse appliqué Thanks for bidding!

1950s-1960s Kuna Child's Mola Blouse: Abstract Bird
Early(1950s-1960s.maybe 1940s) Kuna Child's Blouse. Abstract Bird Design. This one's a challenge. The rare. Highly-abstract design, the skinny sleeves and fairly early cloth all indicate a possible early date- maybe even 1940s. But the thin outlining and high-level craftshmanship would argue for a later(1960s) date. I think it could be either- because a number of 1940s molas with fine workmanship are known. The low intro price will let the market decide how early it is. Acquired from a leading New Mexico collector of Kuna art. Note damage to the yoke. Mola panels measure 15.5" x 14" For more information on molas. Check out the Kuna Art Society page on Facebook.
1960s - 1970s Kuna Child's Mola Blouse: Bird Spirit Fortress
Sikwi Galu(Birds' Spirit Fortress) Kuna Mola Blouse. The green-black-red color combination of this mola blouse works very well. Delivering a strong graphic impact. Note that the birds on one side use a different red cloth than the jungle-maze that forms the galu around them- so that over time the cloth faded to a pinkish red that makes the birds really jump out of the design. Really very beautiful. Excellent craftsmanship and condition. Mola panels measure 19" x 13" Note about pricing: I'm listing a lot of molas from my personal collection with starting prices that I believe are well below what they are worth. I will let Ebay buyers determine their real value. Have fun bidding! For more information on molas. Check out the Kuna Art Society page on Facebook.
1960s Kuna Mola Blouse: Archaic Insect Men?
Archaic Insect Men( Kuna Mola. The abstract two-legged creatures in this mola look a lot like human beings. But their simple rendering and odd faces(horse-like mouths) and weird poles that seem to protrude from the tops of their heads all sort of say"huh? I'm fairly baffled. They could be Nia(devils) And the imagery is somewhat similar to a"noh" frog) design used in some older molas. But it is a mystery. Quite stunning graphics. Excellent craftsmanship and condition. 18" x 14" Note about pricing: I'm listing a lot of molas from my personal collection with starting prices that I believe are well below what they are worth. 1973 Kuna Mola Blouse From Huber Collection: Alphabet
Early 1970s Alphabet Mola Blouse Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. Many Kunas have attended local schools. Where one of the first things they learn is the alphabet- which then serves as inspiration for mola blouses like this one. Pretty nice integration of abstract motifs around the letters to make them sort of"fit into a jungle. Mola panels measure 15" x 13.5" The Huber Collection. Bob and Marianne Huber started collecting molas in the late 1960s. And went on to make a documentary film about mola making in 1973. An exhibit of Kuna art from the Huber collection was exhibited at several European museums including the British Museum. Please note that by bidding on this mola, you grant me the right to use its image in the production of a book and web site on mola art. Thanks for reading.
Vintage Kuna Mola Blouse - Happy Dog
Vingage Mola Blouse with Happy Dog Design. This blouse is a bit of a mystery. The mola panels would appear to be from the 1960s or 1970s. But the huge puffy sleeves are more in tune with the 1980s. My guess is that a Kuna woman"updated" the molas by adding a more modern yoke/sleeve combination. I like the goofy dog's face. Nice"no-slits" design with lots of abstract filler designs. It was loved, and worn, a lot- faded but still shows pretty well. Panels measure 19" x 14" Note about pricing: I'm listing a lot of molas from my personal collection with starting prices that I believe are well below what they are worth. I will let Ebay buyers determine their real value. Have fun bidding! For more information on molas. Check out the Kuna Art Society page on Facebook.
Vintage Kuna Mola Blouse - Devil Politician
Nia(Devil) Politician Mola Blouse. Probably from the late 1960s or early 1970s. The blouse depicts a pretty scary Nia with giant teeth, curled horns, webbed feets, tail feathers, a fancy embroidered tie and a Panamanian flag- which makes him the scariest form of devil, a politiican. Note the extensive and well-done embroidery, including the embroidered vest. Great color and condition. Excellent condition. This blouse has been in my collection for some time. Panels measure 19" x 16.5" Note about pricing: I'm listing a lot of molas from my personal collection with starting prices that I believe are well below what they are worth. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola Blouse - Abstract Houses
1960s Children's Mola Blouse With Abstract Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. Very few complete mola blouses survive from the 1960s- most were dis-assembled to create single panels that were easier to sell to tourists. This example. Based on the size of its sleeves and the uses of applique on the top of the yolk, would appear to date from the 1950s or early 1960s(by the late 1960s many mola blouses started to appear with larger"puffy" sleeves. The simple abstract design, which may represent houses, is visually dazzling. Great colors and condition. Pretty collectible piece. This piece was in storage from 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Childs Mola Blouse - Akke Hooked Vine Motif
1950s- 1960s Kuna Mola Blouse With"Akke" Hooked Vine) Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. Like most collectors. Kit Kapp bought mostly individual mola panels, not complete blouses. Kuna women like to keep the yoke assemblies and built another mola using them. But here we have a complete child's blouse from the late 1960s. The design could be interpreted as"akke" vines) temal" ocean waves) or"kwilen" dancers) I'll let you decide. The striped green cloth used on the yoke works well with the overal design. Good condition. This piece was in storage since 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit.
