A lovely hand carved and painted 18 th century figure made in Guatemala. This statue depicts a young beardless Saint Francis holding the Virgin Mother. Measurements: It is 18 1/2” 46.99cm) tall. Condition: There are losses to the Mother figure: her right arm and left hand are gone. The main figure no longer has the cross or staff that should be in his left hand. Highly collectible and very rare 17th-18th Century. San Pedro de Quiatoni glass bead necklace from Oaxaca, Mexico. These tear drop beads are Venetian/Oaxacan, as there is still ongoing debate as to whether or not they were imported from Venice or made in the burgeoning Mexican glass factories of the same period. Acquired in my travels in Mexico more than 15 years ago. Total height of necklace is approximately 10" and each bead measures 2.5. Mid 18th century gilt hand carved Mexican retablo frame. Rustic hand carving consistent with the dating. Age appropriate wear. The wood is heavy. Dense, and darkened with age. It may be oak. Modern mirror inserted. 39.75' high x 35.5" wide We purchased the frame and mirror in Mexico and imported it ourselves. The frame has been professionally appraised at $10.000- $15,000. 18th century Spanish Colonial Retablo Altar- nicho
The construction of this altar/nicho indicates 18th century with cotter pin hinges. Hand wrought hooks on the front and shaved surfaces. It appears that there was a base but has been separated from the piece long ago. The painting is over a gesso ground and is untouched and dirty. There is worm holes to the back and a split that needs attention. The back is nailed with great old nails. The bottom of the image inside is covered in wax from the"blowing out" of the candles. The colors indicate Mexico but it could be from Peru. More pictures are available upon request. Shipping will be via ups and the charges will be invoiced when they are calculated. There will be no return of the item. DIMENSIONS: 33' HIGH 25' WIDE 6' DEEP.

SUPERB PAIR 18TH CENTURY MEXICAN SANTOS EVANGELIST FIGURES This pair of 18th Century Evangelist santos figures are in rare original condition. As they have been together for over two centuries. I do not wish to separate them now and am selling them together, as a pair, for one price. They were probably carved in one of the great colonial era eclesiastical centers of Mexico, either Mexico City or Puebla, in the late 18th century. They are finely and delicately carved by a master craftsman, and covered with the original gesso and painted in the"Estofado" technique. They are fairly large, 13 inches tall. There is some minor flaking of the gesso, which is to be expected, but overall they are in excellent condition. Mounted on a later base and with later cloth cape. Carved and painted wood. Glass eyes. Cloth cape. The Santos itself looks to date to the late 18th or early 19th century. The base. Upon which it was mounted sometime after the legs broke, is probably early 20th century, as is the old cloth cape. I’m not sure which Saint this is. But possibly Joseph as it looks like other examples of Joseph from Mexico that I have seen. The figure has white glass eyes and blue-painted body, with long brown hair and painted details to the face. It is nicely carved in the Mexican traditional Spanish Colonial style. The Saint appears ... moreto be mounted to the painted wood base, with a nail or metal rod, at the bottom of the right leg. It is a beautiful and small Santos from early Mexico. AGE: Santos- Late 18th- early 19th century. Base and cloth- Early 20th century. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Missing his arms. Loss to the left leg at the thigh. Loss to right leg at the knee. Small losses and wear to the painted surfaces, as shown. Later base and cloth with wear and old patination. Someone has started to clean it in three places(the top part of the dedication; the upper right corner; and the man being beaten in the lower left. There is a shadow on the bottom left of some of the photos. It is NOT a black spot on the painting. The inscription on this retablo indicates it is dedicated to a martyred saint who was apparently persecuted and executed under the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 304. I cannot make out the saint’s first name as it is in red. The next two names are Anthio(Anthony? Ocheno. The lower left shows a man(presumably ... morethe saint) being beaten. I could not get a good translation of many of the words on Google Translate. But they appear to be Spanish. The date of the retablo is August 2. 1799.
