Most likely strap had deterioration over time. 4” x 3 1/4”Griffin grapes and flower arabesque indicate this as colonial period. Very rare. Came from my mother’s collection. Superb Pair Antique 18th Century Spanish Colonial Mexican Santos Figures
SUPERB PAIR 18TH CENTURY MEXICAN SANTOS EVANGELIST FIGURES This pair of 18th Century Evangelist santos figures are in rare original condition. As they have been together for over two centuries. I do not wish to separate them now and am selling them together, as a pair, for one price. They were probably carved in one of the great colonial era eclesiastical centers of Mexico, either Mexico City or Puebla, in the late 18th century. They are finely and delicately carved by a master craftsman, and covered with the original gesso and painted in the"Estofado" technique. They are fairly large, 13 inches tall. There is some minor flaking of the gesso, which is to be expected, but overall they are in excellent condition. I purchased the pair ten years ago from Noyola Anticuarios, a highly regarded antiques dealer in Monterrey, Mexico. Pictured ... moreare the appraisals which accompanied the sale. Each is appraised for 10,000- 15,000 Mexican pesos, which equates to $909- $1,363 each by the 2004 exchange rate. For the pair, this equates to an appraisal of $1,818- $2,726. Antique Spanish Colonial Mexican Santos / 18th-19th Century / Mexico Southwest
Antique Mexican Spanish Colonial Santos 18th- 19th Century ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height on stand- 7.25” 18.5 cm) Width(base) 3.25” 8.5 cm) DESCRIPTION: Small and delicate antique Mexican Santos. Mounted on a later base and with later cloth cape. Carved and painted wood. Glass eyes. Cloth cape. The Santos itself looks to date to the late 18th or early 19th century. The base. Upon which it was mounted sometime after the legs broke, is probably early 20th century, as is the old cloth cape. I’m not sure which Saint this is. But possibly Joseph as it looks like other examples of Joseph from Mexico that I have seen. The figure has white glass eyes and blue-painted body, with long brown hair and painted details to the face. It is nicely carved in the Mexican traditional Spanish Colonial style. The Saint appears ... moreto be mounted to the painted wood base, with a nail or metal rod, at the bottom of the right leg. It is a beautiful and small Santos from early Mexico. AGE: Santos- Late 18th- early 19th century. Base and cloth- Early 20th century. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Missing his arms. Loss to the left leg at the thigh. Loss to right leg at the knee. Small losses and wear to the painted surfaces, as shown. Later base and cloth with wear and old patination. 1799 RETABLO Ex-Voto DEVOTIONAL Oil PAINTING on COPPER 18th Century FOLK ART 22"
Dated 1799 Antique RETABLO Ex-Voto DEVOTIONAL Oil PAINTING on COPPER Mexico FOLK ART Size: 22” by 16 1/2" The wood frame is not included due to additional weight for mailing. It wasn't original anyway. If you want it. We can re-figure the mailing costs. Condition: Needs to be cleaned. Someone has started to clean it in three places(the top part of the dedication; the upper right corner; and the man being beaten in the lower left. There is a shadow on the bottom left of some of the photos. It is NOT a black spot on the painting. The inscription on this retablo indicates it is dedicated to a martyred saint who was apparently persecuted and executed under the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 304. I cannot make out the saint’s first name as it is in red. The next two names are Anthio(Anthony? Ocheno. The lower left shows a man(presumably ... morethe saint) being beaten. I could not get a good translation of many of the words on Google Translate. But they appear to be Spanish. The date of the retablo is August 2. 1799. Please read below for some information I found on the Internet. From Wikipedia: Retablos are devotional or votive paintings. Often on rectangular sheets of tin that illustrate holy images such as Christ. The Virgin Mother. Or one of the hundreds of saints. Ex-votos(from a vow" are different from retablos in that they often depict the story that led to their commission. These stories recall dangerous or threatening events that actually occurred. And which the person survived, thanks to the intercession of a sacred person- God. Mary or a saint. They are made as a way of thanking the sacred person for protection in precarious situations, such as surviving an illness or earthquake. On a strict definition, this class of ex-votos should display the protected humans in the dangerous situation, and the sacred person who protected them, usually with an inscribed explanation of the events, with the date and location. Both devotional and especially ex-voto retablos may be deposited at a shrine as a votive offeri
