Antique Spanish Colonial Retablo San Jose 18 century
A retablo or lamina is a Latin American devotional painting. Especially a small popular or folk art one using iconography derived from traditional Catholic church art. Retablos are important to Mexican folk religion because they are a physical representation of holy images such as Christ. The Virgin Mother, or one of the many thousands of saints. They come from the need humans have to interact on a personal level with divine spirits. Retablos are evidentiary support for communication between the divine and humans. San Jose oil on metal.1875. 13"H, 8 3/4"W From the collection of an old collector. With notarized letter from when was acquired.

Antique Mexican Carved Wood Retablo / Latin American-Spanish Colonial/ Gold Leaf
Antique Mexican Carved and Painted Wood Retablo ~ 19th or Early 20th Century ~ Possibly Saint Francis ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height-15.75" 40 cm) Width- 11.5" 29.2 cm) Depth- 1.8" 4.6 cm) DESCRIPTION: Fine old Mexican or Latin American carved. Gessoed, painted and gilded wood retablo in the form of a three dimensional sculptural carved plaque. This piece dates from the 19th or very early 20th century. Is in the 17th- 18th century Spanish Colonial style, and may be a depiction of Saint Francis. The Saint is holding a book and looking upward and a silver halo surrounds his head. The retablo is carved from a single piece of wood(several pieces joined together and then carved from the one block) and has great detail and beauty. The flat background is a fantastic sea and mountain landscape painting ... moremade by inscribing into the paint allowing the silver leaf behind to show through. The Saint is fully carved and detailed with gesso over the wood. Which has then been painted and covered with gold leaf and silver leaf, in the classical Spanish style. The life-like details are amazing and the decoration is ornate. This piece is painted blue on the reverse and outer edges of the raised integrated frame. On the outer side of left edge is a stamped mark in Spanish. Which is a bit hard to read, but looks to be the mark of a guild or Art- artisan's school. Some of the finest retablos and church altars come from these type of artisan's institutes in Latin and SouthAmerican and this is certainly a very fine example of craftsmanship and religious art. AGE: Late 19th or very early 20th century. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Old worn darkened patina. Wear to the back and edges of the wood and painted surfaces.Small chips and crazing to the painted gesso surfaces. No major breaks, cracks, or damage. No restorations. ~ please click on image for high definition photos ~ This piece will be a museum quality addition to any collec

Mexican Tin Retablo Lamina Antique Santo Spanish Colonial Painting
El Divino Rostro. La Santa Faz, the Veil of Veronica" oil/tin. 14 x 10" anonymous, circa1875, v ery good stable overall condition. Unrestored. This painting of the'Divine Visage" or the"Veil of Veronica" called"Santa Faz" or"Holy Face" in South America) represents an imprint of the blood and sweat from Christ’s face on the scarf of a woman who darts from the crowdof spectators as he drags his cross to Calvary. The name'Veronica' is a scrambling of the letters of the Latin word'vera icon' or'true image' of Christ. Tin retablo paintings show endless variations in style. Aesthetics, and emotional interpretations of this theme. This striking portrayal of Jesus conveys a grace and sense of forgiveness even though he's suffering unspeakable pain& hardship. The idea ... moreof responding with dignity to life's challenges is one of the central lesson of Christ’s teachings. The“Veronica’s Veil” is high on my list of favorite themes and were I to collect just one subject this would be it. Please ask all questions before bidding.this is a final sale. No returns, thank you. Happy bidding!
