Two loops indicate the box was hung over the shoulder with a strap (missing) there also indicates a tint screw on one side probably to keep leather strap in place. Most likely strap had deterioration over time. 4” x 3 1/4”Griffin grapes and flower arabesque indicate this as colonial period. Very rare. Came from my mother’s collection. These exceptional Spanish Colonial Stirrups are in excellent original condition. Carved from Rauli wood. A native wood of Chile that was commonly used ... moreduring the Spanish Colonial Period(18/19thc) Made in the traditional boot shape with an anthemion design(on tip of stirrup) scroll, and other mosaic carvings also of the period. The outer part of the iron mounts have classic diamond, round, and bar shaped designs inlaid with gold(likely from old Inca gold mines still being worked during the time) Most other examples from this period are inlaid with silver only, which makes these stirrups the exception. The Spur has a classic cross design also with gold inlay. Note: I counted approximately 380 inlays in the stirrups, and 180 in the spur, 560 total. If each inlay weighed a mere grain there may be over an ounce of gold(480 grains per troy ounce) but that’s just an estimate, not a guarantee of the amount or its purity. Regardless, together these Spanish Colonial artifacts of the“New World” truly make for an impressive display of history.

A MUCH SOUGHT AFTER FOLKLORIC SOUTH AMERICAN COLONIAL COLLECTIBLE This is a highly collectible garment or cloak pin known as a tupu or tupo. It has a ... moreprominent spoon shaped finial with a double headed eagle over a flower and leaves. The large dark blood red glass bead is held in place with prongs. Tupus were worn with the point facing upwards to hold dresses or mantles together. At one time these tupos were used to identify the wearer’s area of residence and often wealth. They were an important part of cultural significance for indigenous Andeans. Original two century old pieces are hard to find. A similar tupu is illustrated in Argent d’Argentine(1992) which is ascribed to Bolivia and to the eighteenth century. Other references showing a similar tupu is illustrated in Phipps. E. et al. The Colonial Andes: tapestries and Silverwork 1530-1830. Comparing pictures and descriptions appear to show that this piece is from the same 18th century era. Length: 13" Weight: 87 gr. Antique Spanish Colonial Retablo San Jose 18 century
A retablo or lamina is a Latin American devotional painting. Especially a small popular or folk art one using iconography derived from traditional Catholic church art. Retablos are important to Mexican folk religion because they are a physical representation of holy images such as Christ. The Virgin Mother, or one of the many thousands of saints. They come from the need humans have to interact on a personal level with divine spirits. Retablos are evidentiary support for communication between the divine and humans. San Jose oil on metal.1875. 13"H, 8 3/4"W From the collection of an old collector. With notarized letter from when was acquired.
Antique Mexican Carved Wood Retablo / Latin American-Spanish Colonial/ Gold Leaf
Antique Mexican Carved and Painted Wood Retablo ~ 19th or Early 20th Century ~ Possibly Saint Francis ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height-15.75" 40 cm) Width- 11.5" 29.2 cm) Depth- 1.8" 4.6 cm) DESCRIPTION: Fine old Mexican or Latin American carved. Gessoed, painted and gilded wood retablo in the form of a three dimensional sculptural carved plaque. This piece dates from the 19th or very early 20th century. Is in the 17th- 18th century Spanish Colonial style, and may be a depiction of Saint Francis. The Saint is holding a book and looking upward and a silver halo surrounds his head. The retablo is carved from a single piece of wood(several pieces joined together and then carved from the one block) and has great detail and beauty. The flat background is a fantastic sea and mountain landscape painting ... moremade by inscribing into the paint allowing the silver leaf behind to show through. The Saint is fully carved and detailed with gesso over the wood. Which has then been painted and covered with gold leaf and silver leaf, in the classical Spanish style. The life-like details are amazing and the decoration is ornate. This piece is painted blue on the reverse and outer edges of the raised integrated frame. On the outer side of left edge is a stamped mark in Spanish. Which is a bit hard to read, but looks to be the mark of a guild or Art- artisan's school. Some of the finest retablos and church altars come from these type of artisan's institutes in Latin and SouthAmerican and this is certainly a very fine example of craftsmanship and religious art. AGE: Late 19th or very early 20th century. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Old worn darkened patina. Wear to the back and edges of the wood and painted surfaces.Small chips and crazing to the painted gesso surfaces. No major breaks, cracks, or damage. No restorations. ~ please click on image for high definition photos ~ This piece will be a museum quality addition to any collec

Before stirrups most equestrian cultures used no support for the feet at all. There are records of a loose surcingle being employed behind the girth. Into which the feet could be tucked. Toe stirrups(loops of rope ... morewhich held the big toe) were first recorded in Northern India in the 2nd century BC, their use was somewhat limited by climate and footwear. The first stirrups designed to take the entire foot were probably single mounting stirrups recorded in China in the 4th Century AD. The mounting stirrup was easier than using a stool to mount and safer than vaulting on when fully armed(Cambyses, king of Persia stabbed himself while mounting when fully armed in 522 BC- A.D.H.Bivar, The Stirrup and Its Origins. Oriental Arts, n.s. 1(1955) 61-68. Paired stirrups were first recorded in the 4th Century AD on a Chinese pottery horse and a stirrup has been found in a 4th Century Chinese grave. Their use spread through Central Asia and into Europe by the 8th century AD. The stirrup revolutionized riding and warfare. It allowed cavalry to ride further and faster, heavy cavalry and the use of lances developed, as did light cavalry and mounted archers. It was in Byzantine times when some elements like the saddle, stirrups, spurs, bits and bridles became popular and their use spread throughout Europe. This style of Stirrup most likely evolved in Europe during the days of Kn

SUPERB PAIR 18TH CENTURY MEXICAN SANTOS EVANGELIST FIGURES This pair of 18th Century Evangelist santos figures are in rare original condition. As they have been together for over two centuries. I do not wish to separate them now and am selling them together, as a pair, for one price. They were probably carved in one of the great colonial era eclesiastical centers of Mexico, either Mexico City or Puebla, in the late 18th century. They are finely and delicately carved by a master craftsman, and covered with the original gesso and painted in the"Estofado" technique. They are fairly large, 13 inches tall. There is some minor flaking of the gesso, which is to be expected, but overall they are in excellent condition. I purchased the pair ten years ago from Noyola Anticuarios, a highly regarded antiques dealer in Monterrey, Mexico. Pictured ... moreare the appraisals which accompanied the sale. Each is appraised for 10,000- 15,000 Mexican pesos, which equates to $909- $1,363 each by the 2004 exchange rate. For the pair, this equates to an appraisal of $1,818- $2,726. Antique Painted Wood Mexican Spanish Colonial Yucatan Cross of Souls
Antique Painted Wood Mexican Spanish Colonial Yucatan Cross of Souls height 33.5" Painted wood, anonymous, circa 1925, Yucatan, Mexico condition: old breaks and paint loss visible in photos otherwise very good original These green Crosses of Souls were made in the Yucatan Peninsula. I purchased this one in Merida in 1992. Their color has a special significance to the modern Mayan people of that area. When the Spanish arrived the Maya people had a green cross but it's significance differed from the Catholic version. These green painted Catholic Crosses of Souls are a syncretism of ancient Mayan and Catholic belief. CA residents add 9.25% State Sales Tax Please ask all questions before bidding
