Antique South American Andes Indian SILVER Ceremonial TUPO PIN TOPO Jewel Brooch
Up for auction is a beautiful hand hammered ANTIQUE OR VINTAGE SOUTH AMERICAN JEWELLED TUPO OR SHAWL PIN. Also referred to as a TOPO pin, or brooch. This pin has a unique design and is quite intricate. The three stones are green, orange, and blue. There are holes for the traditional add on pieces, but I do not have them. The indigenous women and girls of the Andes in Ecuador. Bolivia and Peru historically fastened their shawls with beautiful clasps called tupos. The tupo design usually identifies the wearer's area of residence and is an important part of cultural identification for Andean women and girls. This lovely tupo is formed from silver and the hand hammered piece features the traditional bird. What appears to be a horse and rider, followed by a llama and a baby llama. The detail is quite intricate, and I am not sure of the symbolism ... moreof some of the figures. These decorative tupos are rarely seen anymore as most shawls are fastened with a large safety pin. This piece is a lovely look back at times past. The tupo measures 9 3/4" long and is approximately 2" wide. The condition of this piece is quite good. Although the stones have scratching from wear. This could be beautifully polished if so desired, as the tarnish is quite light. There is a spot of tarnish or discoloration on the back, and the long pin is not perfectly straight, partially because it is hand made. The areas of concern with the light tarnish and the discoloration on the back show clearly in the photos. So please look closely as they are the best way to make your own assessment of condition.
