The trigonolithe has the classic three points with an anthropomorphic face on one side with bent arms underneath and incised design on sides and on the reverse side. Provenance: Ex. Smith collection; presently private collection. New York, N.Y. Taino culture flourished in the Caribbean between c.1200-1500. The arrival of the Spanish in 1492 resulted in its rapid decline but objects such as this striking trigonolitos. Also known as a three-pointer, testify to high levels of craftsmanship. The Taino left no written language so our knowledge about them derives solely from archaeology and the testimonials of the Spanish settlers. As a result, although significant numbers of three-pointers survive, their precise function within Taino society is unclear. The central cone of these triangular objects has been interpreted in a variety of ways. Suggestions include manioc shoots(one of the main crops of the Taino) volcanoes, the roofs of Taino houses, phalluses and the human breast. None of these theories has been universally accepted and the precise origins of the shape are likely to remain a mystery. Despite this many scholars agree that these ceremonial objects were symbols of power and fertility. This seems to be supported by a letter written by Columbus in which he reports on his findings among the Taino, Equally the majority of caciques(chiefs) have three stones to which they and their people have great devotion. A retablo is a traditional Latin American folk art devotional painting. And then often focus on Catholic iconography. This oil painting on tin features a male saint wearing a green cloak and hat, holding a black staff in one hand and a basket of flowers in the other. His staff has either a bell or a pouch affixed to it. The man has quite a content look on his face. He is surrounded by curtains and flowers, and by four panels of reverse-painted glass with vivid and brightly colored flowers against a shining gold background. I believe that this represents Saint Patrick, but this is open to interpretation. This really is a stunning piece of historically important art. This retablo measures 15.5 inches tall by 11.5 inches across at the wides part. Where there are wings near the top of the frame. It measures 3/4 of an inch deep. The central painting is on a tin background, and the rectangular panels that surround it on four sides depict vivid, colorful flowers and gold which are reverse-painted on glass. The left panel of glass is cracked and a piece of it is missing. The top panel has a crack in the center but no glass is missing and this hairline fracture will not cause further damage. Aside from this, the retablo is in great condition for a piece of folk art that has spent many years on display. Metate, Mexican/Indian stone grain grinder, possibly antique, 18"L X 14"W X 10"H
I bought this at an estate sale. They told me they had bought it from an antique store. It's made out of some kind of rock which is probably granite or lava rock. It doesn't have the grinding stone. Called a mano, that's supposed to go with it. Other than that, it's in very good condition. The small green spot on the top appears to be latex paint. The whitish spot on the side, and all the other spots on it, are natural discolorations in the stone. It's designed so that the end with one leg is higher than the end with two legs, causing the surface to be slightly tilted when it's upright. The end with one leg is 10 inches high. Metate dimensions: 18" X 14" X 10" Weight: 53 lbs 6 oz. U. S. Shipping: $70.10 parcel post + $5.50 insurance = $75.60.
