METATE: PREHISTORIC; GUANACASTE-NICOYA REGION, COSTA RICA
METATE: PREHISTORIC; GUANACASTE-NICOYA REGION. COSTA RICA Height: 9 1/2" Length: 16" Width: 10 3/4" Weight: 32 lbs 9 oz Carved from basalt rock. This TRIPOD LEG metate(grinding platform) came from the Nicoya region of Costa Rica's Guanacaste Province-on the northwestern side of the country facing the Pacific Ocean. The long sloping basin-worn smooth through extensive use-is perched on three carved stone legs: the taller leg allows the user to effortlessly lift the metate up to empty its contents. Metates were used to grind maize and other foodstuffs. Certain ancient rituals must have incorporated this activity and required special metates to be created for this purpose. Carved in volcanic stone. This object has been carefully sculpted to create a gorgeous platform tray. Minor chink along one corner. Lower end of platform ... morehas a nice polish. The result of serious grinding. Its function as a surface for grinding maize. A staple food of the region from which it comes. Own a piece of our Western Hemisphere's ancient past. The extreme weight of this artifact necessitates double boxing as well as much padding. Every effort will be made to lower the shipping cost for the successful bidder-in other words. If you win this astonishing artifact, WAIT for us to invoice the LOWEST shipping price once it is fully packed.
