19C Cross of Souls Animas Mexican Antique Votive Offering Colonial School
Huge 19th century Mexican cross of souls with base. Both are made of mesquite wood and have the original polychrome. There is a carving of the face of Jesus in the center of the cross which has had the crown torn away and bears signs of aging. I am offering this. Antique, Mexican, OLD MAN, Hola Viejo” Pink Faced, carved, wooden mask-on stand as pictured. It is late 1800’s to early 1900’s. I acquired this piece when I lived in Florida. From a collector who purchased it from a high end gallery in New York City years ago. It has oil marks from facial oil on the inside- so it has been“danced” And also has old termite damage from long ago. Mexican or New Mexican Bulto- Altar ~ 19th Century ~ Spanish Colonial Painted& Carved ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Height- 19" Width- 8.75" Depth- 5" DESCRIPTION: Very fine antique Mexican or New Mexican altar with carved figures and profusely painted with Christian- Spanish Colonial imagery. The altar is in the form of a Cross mounted on a stepped pedestal base and there are two carved and painted praying figures attached to the base at the bottom of the cross. Possibly Adam and Eve. The entire front of the piece is painted with images. As you can see. A crucified Jesus Christ is the main image, but there are also images of the Madonna, Saints, all sorts of symbolic tools and instruments, skulls and crossed bones, a deceased person wrapped in red cloth, and at the bottom, eight Anima Solas caught in the ... morefires of purgatory and surrounding a painting of Adam and Eve with the apple tree and serpent. This piece has more interesting images on one piece than I have ever seen. Probably Mexican in origin. But some of the faces look like the New Mexican style by Jose Rafael Aragon and the other Santeros in that Northern area. The piece appears to be quite old and I would guess that ir was made after 1850 but before 1900- maybe circa 1880's. On the unpainted bottom there is a nicely penciled name. Pablo" possibly the name of one of the owners over the years. This is a museum quality example of Hispanic- Latin American- Mexican or New Mexican religious folk art. AGE: 19th Century. CONDITION: Good ethnographic condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Loss of the lower legs and feet of the larger carved figure. Wear and small losses to the painted surfaces, as shown. Darkening to the wood surfaces and a deep rich patina overall from smoke, dirt, handling and age. Overall, very good condition. Antique MEXICAN Completely Handcarved Wood Walking Stick w Bullfighting Motifs
Rare and unusual antique wood walking stick. Handcarved in Mexico ~ this stick was purchased in Mexico by my grandfather in the late 40's, he was told then it was an antique. It probably was made 100+ yrs ago, around the turn of the century. Measures 35" long, the handle portion being 2 1/2" across. The stick is smooth and well-worn overall and has a wonderful patina to it. There are 4 carved pictorial panels ~ top panel shows the Mexican national symbol of the eagle holding the snake in its mouth, perched on a prickly pear cactus which is atop a patriotic cloth banner, held with a large tassel on reverse ~ the other 3 panels depict different bullfighting scenes, each with the matador and bull in realistic situations. All of the panels are"framed" the frames and other details, such as the matadors' capes, have ... morebeen stained red and green, the green having faded quite a bit. The raised figures and the background are contrasting black/tan swirled areas done with a pyrographic(burning) technique, giving the areas a wonderful jaguar fur-like coloring! This pyro application was done all over the stick first, then being carved, and finally the red and green stain would be applied. Certainly a lot of time and thought went into this process ~ a beautiful piece of antique Mexican folk art, still quite usable today ~ wonderfully decorative too! Antique Mexican Carved and Painted Wood Retablo ~ 19th or Early 20th Century ~ Possibly Saint Francis ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height-15.75" 40 cm) Width- 11.5" 29.2 cm) Depth- 1.8" 4.6 cm) DESCRIPTION: Fine old Mexican or Latin American carved. Gessoed, painted and gilded wood retablo in the form of a three dimensional sculptural carved plaque. This piece dates from the 19th or very early 20th century. Is in the 17th- 18th century Spanish Colonial style, and may be a depiction of Saint Francis. The Saint is holding a book and looking upward and a silver halo surrounds his head. The retablo is carved from a single piece of wood(several pieces joined together and then carved from the one block) and has great detail and beauty. The flat background is a fantastic sea and mountain landscape painting ... moremade by inscribing into the paint allowing the silver leaf behind to show through. The Saint is fully carved and detailed with gesso over the wood. Which has then been painted and covered with gold leaf and silver leaf, in the classical Spanish style. The life-like details are amazing and the decoration is ornate. This piece is painted blue on the reverse and outer edges of the raised integrated frame. On the outer side of left edge is a stamped mark in Spanish. Which is a bit hard to read, but looks to be the mark of a guild or Art- artisan's school. Some of the finest retablos and church altars come from these type of artisan's institutes in Latin and SouthAmerican and this is certainly a very fine example of craftsmanship and religious art. AGE: Late 19th or very early 20th century. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Old worn darkened patina. It is in good condition with no damage and the paint is still bright though covered with dust scattered about. The wood and glass frame are intact. No damage to the glass and the wood frame has expected dings and scratches but nothing serious. The cardboard backing has been compromised but is intact. This backing is strengthened with wood top and bottom.There are spots scattered all over the inside of the box as you can see in the photo. May be mildew but doesn't appear to be a threat. These spots may be intentional, I honestly can't tell through the glass. I am offering this. Antique, Mexican, Hand Carved, wooden mask as pictured. It is late 1800’s to early 1900’s. I acquired this piece from a collector who purchased it from a high end gallery in New York City years ago. It has oil marks from facial oil on the inside- so it has been“danced” It has several old coats of paint. And loss of paint, and lots of wear, and an old repair for a crack on the top, that looks great. Whatever happened condition-wise was perfect. It is truly a fine mask, and shows very well as you can see. It has been one of my favorite pieces, and I would like someone else to enjoy it now. The most UNIQUE or possibly to some CREEPY aspect of this mask if the REAL mammal Teeth! Antique Mexican retablo Virgen de la Candelaria oil on tin
Beautiful Mexican retablo oil on tin of the Virgen de la Candelaria ca. 1850-1880. This rare image measures approximately 10" x 14" and is quite unusual in that the Virgen is seated amongst the clouds and her throne appears to be leaning to the left. The anonymous artist obviously employed artistic license in depicting this most intriguing representation of the Virgen de Candelaria. Complete with the requisite attributes of the candle in her right hand and the Christ child in her left. There is paint loss and pitting commensurate with the age of this piece but not that affects the overall feel of this work of art. The lace work is very elegant and the Christ Child is sweet and gentle. The hands and face of the Virgin are both superbly executed. Purchased in Mexico many years ago. A fabulous large hand hammered copper bowl measuring 12 inches(31 cm) in diameter and 3 inches(7.5 cm) high. Por Aprecio" In gratitude) and a flower hammered in the center of the bowl For collection at church services We bought it from the estate of a man who had lived in Mexico until the 1930's. He willed this and a few other items to his nephew in Pennsylvania when he died. We bought it at the estate auction of the nephews possessions about 5 years ago. I date it from somewhere right around 1850 if not a bit earlier. Examples of copper church bowls can be seen in museum collections- but the form is rarely found The decoration on this one is wonderful and while worn it is mostly intact As for condition. Antique Metate measures approx. 17 1/2" long by 12 1/2" wide and 7" tall and the Mano measures 2 1/2" by 10 1/2" They are made of very heavy lava rock the same material as"Mojcajetes"pestle& mortar) It has 3 legs with one of them being slightly taller to aid in the grinding process. Due to camera flash they are slightly darker in color in person. They are all hand carved out of a big chunk of lava rock. Please understand that it is normal for these to have small knicks or chips which are minor and do not jeopardize the integrity of its strength. Antique 19th century colonial Mexican wood and polychrome santo Cruz de Animas
A superb colonial santo. Mexican school, early 19th century. This is a representation of a Cruz de Animas: a penitent's cross. It depicts the crucified Christ surrounded by painted symbols relating to his life, death and resurrection as described in the Bible, including the sun and moon, Jacob's Ladder, the cock that crowed thrice and the the Holy Grail. Above the Christ, a crowning medallion depicts God the Father. The base of the cross has two levels. The first depicts Adam and Eve, Saint Michael with the Flaming Sword that he carried while escorting them out of Eden, and Death armed with a quiver of arrows standing over a sick man, about to take his life. The lower level depicts penitent souls(animas penitentes" who have sinned and now pray to be delivered from Hell. The santo measures 19.25 inches high. 9.5 inches wide and ... more3 inches deep. Its condition is excellent for its age. There are no missing pieces and the paint remains largely intact. There is naturally some age-related weathering, but the piece has been restored and waxed by an expert to preserve it. This santo is authentic. It was bought by an experienced collector and restorer of wooden santos in Mexico in the early 1970s. I inherited it.
