Huge 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Eagles, Canoes, Anchors
Sulup Ulu(Eagles in canoes with anchors) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is one of the largest 1960s molas I have ever seen- 24.5" wide! It depicts four eagles. Two on circular motifs and two on triangular designs- all of which Kit Kapp describes as"canoes with anchors. Very colorful, very well made and in overall good condition. 24.5" x 17.5" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. Mola Art from the San Blas Islands. Very well rendered(great look on her face)it is similar to a piece published in Ann Parker's book(see below) But a large section of background cloth(by her left arm mostly) has worn away. Racy 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Mating Birds
Sikwi Makket(Mating Birds) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Really a pretty great mola- note the very wide channel around the mating birds and the solo bird at the top(normally such wide channel-outlining is only found in pre-World War II molas) This one is probably from the 1950s or early 1960s. It shows a subject that the Kuna are quite sensitive about- mating- so the artist simple shows the act as one giant bird with two heads and two sets of legs. The liberal uses of old printed fabrics as inserts is a nice touch- as is the spectacular sunburst embroidered eyes on each bird. A rare and collectible piece.There's one area where the base layer wore through. But someone has pulled the hole out of site so it's not noticeable from the front. Wekko(Snake Killing Bird) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Very Rare Variation. This is the only wekko mola using this design variation that I know of. Rendered mostly using two layers and two colors. It is a more abstract depiction of the bird, and especially of the snake. Note the head of the snake is entirely abstracted- it looks sort of like a big fork with a tongue. I particularly like the minimalist use of atlernate cloth colors for the birds' eye and comb, and for the snake's tongue. Great design. Great rarity. Great provenance. The first time I met Valerie and Kit Kapp. They were showing me over 100 molas, and I asked them, Is there any piece in particular I should get? Val piped up and asked me if I had a"pikpi" mola, and when I said I didn't she told me I had to have one. This is the one I bought that day. Compare it to the example on page 25 of"Mola Art of the San Blas Islands" and you will see that they are very similar, except in the published example the fans are held upright, and in this one they are facing downward. It depicts three Kantule chanters at a Chicha Fest celebrating a young girl's coming of age. Note that two of the Kantules are holding large three-pronged gourd maracas. Achu Barbat Sikwi(Mountain Dogs and Birds) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. When Kit Kapp sold me this mola he described it as a"Mukan" or"grandmother" mola. Which to him meant that it was made in the 1930s or 1940s. I don't think it's from the 1930s, but 1940s or 1950s is certainly plausible. It uses a lot of early cloth, including the"LBP" Light Balanced Plainweave) that I have come to associate with pre-World War II molas. It also has a number of the weird"embroidery squiggles" that often appear in early pieces- little lines and zig-zags and odd lines that don't really add to the design. A rare and early piece. One view is that the eage(or is it a dragon? is swooping down and attacking the monkey in the lower-right corner. My interpretation is that the devil-eagle is actually a spirit rising from the monkey. Size. Style and cloth indicate this is probably a 1950s mola, though it could be early 1960s or late 1940s. I'm not sure if the boat is a submarine or a trawler- the spout-like device on top could be a smokestack or a periscope. The mola is intricately worked with very early cloth throughout- including a number of printed fabric inserts. But I suspect it is from the'50s or early'60s. Highly-abstract design, the skinny sleeves and fairly early cloth all indicate a possible early date- maybe even 1940s. But the thin outlining and high-level craftshmanship would argue for a later(1960s) date. I think it could be either- because a number of 1940s molas with fine workmanship are known. Yet oddly simple, with dark lines that define hair, head, body and feet of the devil mermaids, and then meld into the"pirya" spiritual whirlpool) design between each pair of mermaids. Really cleverly done. Note the yes with radiating arrows emerging from them. There's an obvious tear in upper-right, the visual effect of which could be minimized by mounting and framing. But their simple rendering and odd faces(horse-like mouths) and weird poles that seem to protrude from the tops of their heads all sort of say"huh? I'm fairly baffled. World-Class Mosquito Mola Collected by Kit Kapp. Molas of this quality rarely come on the market. It combines great subject matter. Spectacular colors and drawing, and impeccable workmanship. For a very similar example see page 198 of Mari Lyn Salvaldor's book The Art of Being Kuna. It depicts a person that appears to be flying though the air while holding a bag with knitting-needle-like objects protruding from it. The person's buttocks are exposed in full glory so that the large grinning mosquito can pierce them with its long proboscis. Below another similar scene is taking place but the person seems to be being chased by a large set of leaves with jaws! Huge 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola From Huber Collection: Sianala Incense Braziers
Big Beautiful Sianala(Incense Braziers) Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. Modern molas are almost always less than 16" wide. In the 1960s the average width was 19" In the 1920s the average width was 24" the size of this mola. It also uses very fine guazey black base-layer cloth. As is found on many very early molas. But the cutting and drawing on this piece are extremely fine, exhibiting meticulous hand-work- something I normally associate with the early 1960s. There are examples of very finely made molas like this in the Smithsonian collection- that were collected in the late 1930s or the 1940s. My guess is that this piece is from the 1940s. Fishing Cayuco with Evinrude collected by Kit Kapp in 1969 in Rio Sidra. This mola is loaded with little details. The hat on the skipper. The"EVINROO" emboidered on the outboard motor. The guy in the front holding a fishing line and wearing a pouch around his neck. And it looks like they might have 10 molas hanging from a line- perhaps to sell? I have no idea why there is an eagle sitting on top of a perch! From one of the great early collections of molas. Or it may be depicting performers in a Panamanian festival(Kuna women often depict"Wakkas" or strangers using black cloth, as is the case here) The dancers/performers appear to have large feathered headdresses or hats and colorful skirts. 1960s Child's Windup Toy Kuna Mola. There is a nearly identical example of this mola in the Smithsonian collection. It depicts a mechanical toy- note the windup key on the top of the figure. Very nicely executed mola with great detail on the toy's face and pants. Very folksy. Very fun piece. 1960s Kuna Mola -- Radar Listening Device
1960s Radar Listening Device/Vehicle Kuna Mola. If you look at page 120 of Parker and Neal's book Molas, you will see another example of a"Radar Car" mola. These devices. That seem to be cross between a railroad car and a radar station, were a popular theme among mola makers for a while in the'60s. The one presented here has"radar" reflectors that have morphed into church bells, perhaps because that's what the Kuna woman was familiar with. Rare Yauk(Turtle) Mola Collected by Kit Kapp. This might actually be a unique mola- I have never seen another with this design. It is an abstract two-headed turtle amids a mase of motifs that can be interpreted either as fish or as islands as viewed from above. Really remarkable imagery on the Yauk with a spider-like abstract medallion in its center. When I first bought it from Kit. Many years ago, I could not see the turtle until he pointed it out to me. 1960s Kuna Mola With Rocking Horse.Collected by Kit Kapp. Out of storage for the first time in 43 years. There's a collection tag on this mola saying it was collected in December of 1970 on Nalu Nega Island. A second tag notes: Moli Mola- an acculturated motif featuring a rocking horse. Apparently the rocking horse bucked pretty vigorously. Because it has thrown off its child rider, who is flying through the air ahead of the horse! Excellent workmanship, color and condition.
