Antique Pre-Columbian Toltec Olmec Mayan Carved Stone Mask 7 1/2"H by 7 1/4"W
This is a WONDERFUL old antique carved stone mask that I believe is Mayan. I purchased this mask years ago at a estate auction in Avon Indiana. It measures approx. 7 1/2" tall by 7 1/4" wide& is has been broken at some point& glued back together. The holes all appear to have been flint drilled& there is signs of crustacean deposits. STORAGE SALE: Sold here are extra pieces we've accumulated over the course of buying collections. An Olmec greenstone standing figure from Mexico with upward gaze and arms outstretched. Measuring 2 7/8" tall by 1 7/8" wide. Old glued mends to the tips of both feet and hands(sloppy on left hand) Sold as is. This is one of the few pieces I kept from Dr. George Alan Solem's collection. Who was a curator at the Field Museum in Chicago.

Captured enemy soldiers would be put to the Axe and tossed from the tops of temples to honor the Gods. Intricate weapons were created to send these sacrifices to their final resting place. Stones used included Jade. Obsidian, and Diorite-Bassalt. This Figurative Axe has classic features of the Olmec civilization including large lips and small eyes. Sinew or rope would tie through the Ear Flares and the opening in the mouth to attach the stone to a handle. The top of the head comes to a sharp edge. With signs of use, for the striking edge. The Axe has clear signs of wear and age around the Ear Flares and the Eyes.
