Latin American antique terra cotta pottery serving dish - large
This large serving dish is extremely well crafted- hand made and scraped smooth. It has age to it- but I don't know how much. The amount of care in this piece would suggest it is not recent or a tourist item. It has a charming scalloped rim. There is a small hairline crack(see photo 6 from inside. And 9 from outside) which has a small chip on the outside underneath. The dish is 14" x 12" 16 1/2" long including handles. 3 3/4" high. Please email with info or questions.

Antique Mexican Carved and Painted Wood Retablo ~ 19th or Early 20th Century ~ Possibly Saint Francis ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height-15.75" 40 cm) Width- 11.5" 29.2 cm) Depth- 1.8" 4.6 cm) DESCRIPTION: Fine old Mexican or Latin American carved. Gessoed, painted and gilded wood retablo in the form of a three dimensional sculptural carved plaque. This piece dates from the 19th or very early 20th century. Is in the 17th- 18th century Spanish Colonial style, and may be a depiction of Saint Francis. The Saint is holding a book and looking upward and a silver halo surrounds his head. The retablo is carved from a single piece of wood(several pieces joined together and then carved from the one block) and has great detail and beauty. The flat background is a fantastic sea and mountain landscape painting ... moremade by inscribing into the paint allowing the silver leaf behind to show through. The Saint is fully carved and detailed with gesso over the wood. Which has then been painted and covered with gold leaf and silver leaf, in the classical Spanish style. The life-like details are amazing and the decoration is ornate. This piece is painted blue on the reverse and outer edges of the raised integrated frame. On the outer side of left edge is a stamped mark in Spanish. Which is a bit hard to read, but looks to be the mark of a guild or Art- artisan's school. Some of the finest retablos and church altars come from these type of artisan's institutes in Latin and SouthAmerican and this is certainly a very fine example of craftsmanship and religious art. This is a pair of antique Latin American dolls. Not sure of the country of origin. But definitely Latin American. Each is about 12" tall. The bodies are made of some kind of composition. The hair under the sombreros looks real. They are all complete and all original including the closing. The condition is quite good for the age. ANTIQUE LATIN AMERICAN SKRIMSHAW CARVED COCONUT SHELL & WHITE METAL ATTACHMENTS
Normal 0 This beautifully carved coconut shell is thought to be over150 years old. But the meaning of the main emblem is a mystery. The 2 clasped hands, cap and arrow are similar to the old coat of arms of Argentina, but here an arrow is pointing down instead of a staff. The 2 cornucopia surrounding the hands are reminiscent of the coat of arms of Columbia. The metal rim, the fitting at the pointed and of the shell, the link and clasp are all unmarked white metal, almost certainly silver. The clasp has a small and highly detailed animal head holding a ring in its mouth. If anyone can shed any light, please let us know. The condition is excellent. Apart from some light discolouration of the chocolate coloured shell by rubbing against the metal linkage, and the pointed end fastener being loose due to wear. If it was meant for rum it would leak ... morearound this fastener. The coconut is about 11cm long and the fastener. Link and clasp about 7.5cm. The total weight is about 80g. This is a really nice piece that is well carved and unique. The piece is in good condition. There does appear to be some green filler in a small area(see photo) This could be a quetzal bird that is a common theme in Guatemalan art; however I am not sure. Lovely Antique Carved Cedar Mask Native West Coast ? South Latin American Mexico

Please let us know and we will email them to you directly. We are offering to you a wonderful old hand carved mask. This is an amazing old piece that was carved in what looks like cedar. The wood is quite light. This 18.75" long mask weighs only 582 grams or 1.2 lbs. It has old original green paint and what looks like red paint that has nice age wear and are"dry" colors. The piece has soiling and the colors are hard to see. We have had quite a hrad time with identifying this piece. It was bought in the 1960's at an antique store in Calgary. It is quite old and the photos of the back and bottom tell it all. It was hewn from a solid log and has wonderful age"burn" ... moreboth on the back and the green paint. Has a great head dress. The bottom edge has age wear and old dry rot Not signed that I can see. Not sure of the origin of this piece. Could be West Coast Native. Mexican? or South American. I lean towards Mexican area but I am no expert on these masks. It is a lovely piece of art that was carved by a master. Would look great showcased on a wall in your lovely home. All in good shape with normal age wear and a fine patina. We recently bought a collection of wonderful African.
