It is used to ward off evil ... morespirits and protect the Kuna people. I do not know very much about them. Especially this one, since I have had it so long I don't remember when I purchased it. I have been collecting molas since 1960 so it may have been early in my collecting experience. This is a very interesting piece in that it has two faces. Each appearing substantially the same to me except one is a bit more worn than the other. Both have the nose ring and the black line down the nose that the Kuna women wear. The cheeks are rouged, which I do not remember. Each side wears a mola, meticulously sewn as if a Kuna woman were planning to wear it. There is a bit of embroidery, so that would mean the doll was made after the mid-60s. Each side has a head scarf as though that were the front. The skirt goes all the way around to cover the legs. The body is made of a lightweight wood. Perhaps balsa. The weight is very light. I am not sure that the Kunas dress up the nuchus they use in their ceremonies. I have some enormous(4' to 5'5" nuchus that are unclothed that I have had for a long time. I think the clothed ones are for our benefit. They are quite attractive though. This one is 6.8" not counting its headscarf. Which can be folded down. If you go with the headscarf up, it approaches 11" If you have any questions. Please contact me. 21" Antique Nele Nuchu Figure, From Guna Yala Islands (Kuna Yala, San Blas)
I purchased this in the 1980's on one of the islands in Guna Yala. formerly San Blas then Kuna Yala) I was shopping for Mola when I noticed this figure inside the Kuna woman's hut. I didn't know what it was for at the time, it just caught my eye. The Kuna woman said it was not for sale but I pleaded and she relented. Since then I have learned of it's purpose as a Shaman's Nele Nuchu healing figure. Figure wears several different pieces of cloth, including a piece of old mola. Figure also wears several shell/seed/glass bead necklaces. Figure has seed eyes and a piece of silver colored metal nose jewelry. Figure is made from a fairly lightweight wood. The left side of the face is split, it was like that when I purchased it. Split extends down neck to base. Measured at base, split is 2" deep extending to center of wood ... morelog. Figure stands 21" tall and has 14" circumference.

Kuna Nuchu- Carved Wooden Healing Doll. Nuchus. Or uchus, are used by Kuna medicine men(Ina Tuledi) in various ceremonies for healing. By burning cacao beans and reciting chants, the spirit within the doll is activated and motivated to rescue or heal a kidnapped spirit from the victim. Many small nuchus are carved from light balsa wood with the intention of sale to tourists. But this is a heavy hardwood nuchu with nice carving(hands have fingers) and nice painting and considerable patina from years of handling. Over 100 Years Old, Kuna NUCHU of ANGEL Medicine Man Wood Healing Figure
I have owned this very special"Nuchu" of an angel for over 40 years and when I received it. It was already very old. I would date it to the turn of the 20th century, making it over 100 years old. It was given to me by Henrique Figueroa of the village of Wichubuala, Kuna-Yala, the San Blas Islands of Panama. It is the only time I have ever seen a"Nuchu" of an angel. Nuchus" or sometimes called"Uchus" depending on the village) are healing figures and are used for protection and to keep watchful over the owner and keep away evil spirits. A medicine man, woman or Nele is summoned in the healing process, for communicating with the spirits and for soul retrieval, restoring the balance of health to the ill individual. The Nele(shaman medicine man or woman) will sing healing chant and burn cacao beans(chocolate ... morebeans) in a clay sensor underneath the patients hammock. Nuchus are not made to sell, and are infused with healing powers, made to protect the owner. Museum Quality,1900s Kuna NUCHU (UCHU) "Inna Suar" Medicine Healing Wand, Mola
This is a"Inna Suar" medicine stick or wand. Used similar to a"Nuchu" it dates from late 1800's to early 1900's, and is of a type that is extremely rare; it would only have been made and used by only the most accomplished of medicine men, an"Innatuledi" or"Nele" seer or clairvoyant. Called a"Inna Suar" medicine stick or wand, it is used in the healing ritual when capturing a benevolent spirit(bad spirit causing the illness) by the medicine man. This medicine wand is held over the patient and used to capture the evil spirit which is then sent back into the underworld. This"medicine wand" would have been held over the patient while chanting by the medicine man and used in the healing process for communicating with the spirits.
