10 Vintage Kuna Indian Mola Collection-Panama 3.50112
If you have questions. Please feel free to call me on Skype. Click on the images above for larger views) Folks. There are 10 molas in this listing. They failed to make the Traderbrock cut when we recently returned from Panama. We always wind up with 50-100 molas that don't make the cut because of the way we buy. We buy in quantity and ususally with little time to review the individual molas. However, it all works out in the end. These molas are perhaps torn, dirty or stained or maybe they combine hand and machine stitching. One thing is for sure.they are old. I put the word out I wanted vintage molas and I bet I got every blouse mola that has been hanging in someone's closet since the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. Anyway. The buyer gets all 10 molas. Wash them in Woolite and you might be surprised. The Mola Story A short 30 ... moreminute flight from Panama City will take you several centuries back into the past. As you visit the San Blas Islands of the Kuna people, who still keep their old lifestyle and traditions. The Archipelago is composed of over three hundred islands. Some inhabited, some not, some named others remaining nameless to this day, all of them surrounded with crystal clear waters. It is Paradise found. The Kuna people wear dresses adorned with hand made molas. As well as colored bead ornaments on their wrists and ankles. Chains, pectorals, a red headress, and gold noserings complete their every-day attire. Super-Comic 1960s Kuna Mola - Captain Marvel - Parker Neal Collection
Captain Marvel Comic Book Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. A truly great example of an acculturated mola. This piece depicts a scene from a Captain Marvel comic book. It's even labeled Captain Marvel at the top, but with pretty bad spelling(MABWE = MARVEL) A very cool piece, well executed in generally very good condition. Great provenance. 20" x 16" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Is one of the most important mola books ever written. Huge 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Eagles, Canoes, Anchors
Sulup Ulu(Eagles in canoes with anchors) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is one of the largest 1960s molas I have ever seen- 24.5" wide! It depicts four eagles. Two on circular motifs and two on triangular designs- all of which Kit Kapp describes as"canoes with anchors. Very colorful, very well made and in overall good condition. 24.5" x 17.5" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. 1960s Kuna Mola - Grandma with Firefans - Parker Neal Collection
Mu Pikpi(Grandmother with Firefans) Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This traditional mola shows grandma. With a big nose ring, sitting on a Kuna stool holding two large woven"pikpi" or firefans. In Kuna culture it is grandma's job to keep the fire going- and this is a popular them in 1960s molas. Very well rendered(great look on her face)it is similar to a piece published in Ann Parker's book(see below) But a large section of background cloth(by her left arm mostly) has worn away. It would look fine if mounted on a red background cloth. Great provenance. 21" x 17" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Cool 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola - Abstract Frogs - Parker Neal Collection
Noh(Frog) Design Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Another graphically strong abstract mola. This could be a jungle or vine motif- but I believe it is abstract frogs. The drawing is very strong and the colors really jump. Really a very cool piece, but with areas where wear and washing have eaten small bits of the black applique strips. Rare Early Large Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Morning Glories
Tuttu(Morning Glory Flowers) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is not your typical 1960s mola. The design and workmanship indicate an early date- as does the use of very lightweight loose balanced plainweave cotton for the base layer. The large size(22" is another sign of a possible early date- I'm guessing 1950s or earlier. The flower design is also not common and has a fluid. Painterly quality to it. Note the openness of the channels of dark cloth outlining the flowers. A pretty special piece. There are areas of the base cloth where the thin fabric has lost wefts or thinned out to nothing, but they are not very noticeable. There is also an area to the lower right of the central large flower where a section of applique strips has flown the coop. 22" x 17" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Nusa Pokwa - Two Rats
Kuna Mola collected by Kit Kapp- Nusa Pokwa(Two Rats) Rats are very much despised by the Kunas- so why not use their images to decorate one's clothes! Here we have two very large rats on a very large mola- probably made in the 1950s or early 1960s. Note the minimal use of slit-motif fillers- instead most of the fillers are large abstract motifs. A weirdly charming early piece with top-shelf provenance. 21" x 15" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. Mola Art from the San Blas Islands. Museum Quality Kuna Mola Blouse - Chickens - ex Parker Neal Collection
Museum Quality Mola Blouse- Colorful Chickens- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This blouse is a great example of a late-1960s mola- made in a time period some call the golden age of mola making. Late 60s molas exhibited much better sewing and cutting skills than earlier pieces. But had not yet developed the overly-precise quality(sort of paint-by-numbers precise) that became popular in later years. This example appears to depict a rooster on one side and two hens on the other(though it may be a two-headed hen- something that is not unprecedented- note two heads and two feet! Note the spectacularly beautiful morsana strip across the top and the use of green corduroy for the yoke. Wonderful piece. Great execution, superb sewing, excellent condition. Great provenance. Museum Quality Kuna Mola - Devil Monkey or Squirrel - ex Parker Neal Collection
Museum Quality Devil Monkey or Devil Squirrel or Devil Lizard Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Michael Perrin calls this design"Nia Taim" or Devil Lizard. But I think that the feathered tail may indicate a squirrel- and the head looks monkey-like. So you decide. Whatever animal it is. It is almost certainly possessed by a Nia, or devil. The face is fantastic, complete with little pink tongue pointing out, multi-colored hair and spooky eyes. Great execution, superb sewing, excellent condition. Kuna Mola Blouse - ex Parker Neal Collection - Whale and Turtle Spirits
Mola Blouse With Whale and Turtle Spirits- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Wild and colorful. This complete mola blouse portrays the spirits of a whale and a turtle- depicted in the form of birds- rising out of the back of the two creatures. The designs of the animals and spirits is really fun with a lot of hard-to-execute small diamond motifs, circles and bullet-shaped motifs. Note the cool hair on the whale's spirit bird(one side only) and the cool embroidered bird-eyes. The secondary plant motifs are also interesting. Great provenance. Fabulous 1960's Kuna Spiderweb Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection
Museum Quality"Tipa" Spider in Web) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is a great example of why I think that molas are the pinnacle of folk art textiles. The faces on the three weird little spiders could provide a powerful graphic definition of the phrase"folk art. Crude and sophisticated. Fun and scary, and well, just plain odd. 1960's Kuna Child's Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection - Abstract Firefans
Pikpi(Firefans) Child's Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Many modern molas are about this size- but when this one was made. In the 1960s, one of this size would have been for a young girl. I double that a child made it, however, because the workmanship is spectactular, with smooth even lines and"invisible" stitching. Rare School Numbers Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection
Escuela Trabajo(School Work) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Starting in the first decade of the 20th century. Catholic and Baptist missionaries began setting up schools in an attempt to"civilize" the Kuna Indians. The mathematics classes taught in these schools inspired a number of molas because the Kuna girls liked the shape of the numbers- they were good visual material for use in a mola. This example of an"escuela" mola features wonderful, folky, colorful numbers in a wild sort of grid. A very cool piece. I've never seen another quite like it. Abstract Kuna Mola - ex Parker Neal Collection - Father's Way or Devil
Abstract"Bab Igar" Father's Way) or"Nia" Devil) Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. A colorful example of a traditional Kuna abstract mola. Museum Quality 1970s Kuna Mola - ex Parker Neal Collection - Angels & Cross
Museum Quality Mola- Angels Praying to"PAP DUMMAT" Cross- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Parker and Neal are best known for having first thoroughly documented this kind of acculturated mola. It is a super example of how the Kuna's will seize imagery from other cultures and use it in their molas with adding their own cultural touches. The two angels are clearly Christian in origin. While the cross could be Christian or Kuna- both cultures used it- but is likely Christian. But the cross is labeled with clearly-Kuna wording"PAP TUMMAT" translates to"Big Father" or"God" or, may favorite, Big Daddy. It is the Kuna way of saying"God. IKAR NUEDI" translates as"beautiful way. Cool combination of cultures! Sorry, I've been reading too much James Ellroy lately. Very well cut and ... moresewn- about as good as it gets. Another true masterpiece. Outstanding provenance. 18" x 13.5" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Is one of the most important mola books ever written. Racy 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Mating Birds
Sikwi Makket(Mating Birds) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Really a pretty great mola- note the very wide channel around the mating birds and the solo bird at the top(normally such wide channel-outlining is only found in pre-World War II molas) This one is probably from the 1950s or early 1960s. It shows a subject that the Kuna are quite sensitive about- mating- so the artist simple shows the act as one giant bird with two heads and two sets of legs. The liberal uses of old printed fabrics as inserts is a nice touch- as is the spectacular sunburst embroidered eyes on each bird. A rare and collectible piece. There's one area where the base layer wore through. But someone has pulled the hole out of site so it's not noticeable from the front. Great Kuna Mola - ex Parker Neal Collection - Galu Spirit Place Dwelling
Galu(Spirit Place Dwelling) Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Charming Kuna Mola - ex Parker Neal Collection - Devil or Sianala man
Quirky Kuna Mola Featuring Devil or Sianala Man- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This mola features an odd little guy with gigantic buck teeth. When I first saw it I presumed the guy was a Nia. Or devil. But the outstretched arms seem to be holding abstract sianalas(the clay sensor pots the Kunas use for incense burning) The design can also be"read" upside down, where the Nia/Man's head suddenly has a huge smile with no buck teeth and he's earing some kind of a huge hat(kurgin) with a cross on it. Gas Candelabra Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This is a good example of an odd mola design that shows a giant Coleman-gas lantern in candelabra form being adjusted by a little man. With people observing from nearby tiny houses. I've seen several examples of this design over the years, but they are usually in very"holy" condition- because they just wore out from long term wear. Parker-Neal Collection Kuna Mola: Dancing Flying Dragons
Dancing Dragons Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Probably from the early 1960s or the 1950s. This is an excellent example of the golden era of mola making. Wonderful free-form drawing, great dragon imagery, nice oddball motifs like little men, butterflies and abstract shapes.it's gorgeous. And it's big. There are several areas where the base layer is thin or broken through, but it really does show well. The woman who made it really liked it(I don't blame her) and she wore it and washed it a lot. Wekko Naibe(snake-killing birds) mola collected by Kit Kapp. Deadly snakes are a big part of Kuna life. So they have great respect for the"Wekko" bird, which is known for its snake hunting abilities. Molas from the 1930s depict a similar scene, with birds killing a giant two-headed snake. This pice is almost certainly from the early or mid-1960s. Nia Temal Purba(Sea Devil Spirit With Fish) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. I've never seen a mola anything like this one. A sea devil(temal nia) is standing on a bridge made of two fish's beaks(or saws or swords) while holding the noses of two other fish- while doing what appears to be an Irish jig! Pretty cool. Pretty different. The winning bidder will be the only one on his or her block to possess such a thing! From one of the great early collections of molas. 19" x 15" The Kit Kapp Collection. Nugga Satte(No-Name. Abstract Design) Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Collectors(including myself) are often looking for"meaning" in the designs of molas and other art works by indigenous peoples. But sometimes there just isn't any meaning. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Wekko Bird Design
Wekko(Snake Killing Bird) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Very Rare Variation. This is the only wekko mola using this design variation that I know of. Rendered mostly using two layers and two colors. It is a more abstract depiction of the bird, and especially of the snake. Note the head of the snake is entirely abstracted- it looks sort of like a big fork with a tongue. I particularly like the minimalist use of atlernate cloth colors for the birds' eye and comb, and for the snake's tongue. Great design. Great rarity. Great provenance. Plus it kept it's ruffle at the bottom! 18" x 17" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Firefans - Similar to Published Example
Pikpi Mu(Firefans with Grandma) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Similar to Example Published in Kapp Book. The first time I met Valerie and Kit Kapp. They were showing me over 100 molas, and I asked them, Is there any piece in particular I should get? Val piped up and asked me if I had a"pikpi" mola, and when I said I didn't she told me I had to have one. This is the one I bought that day. Compare it to the example on page 25 of"Mola Art of the San Blas Islands" and you will see that they are very similar, except in the published example the fans are held upright, and in this one they are facing downward. It has a couple of very small splits in the background cloth, which I tend not not notice unless I hold it up to the light. The color, design and execution are really very good. And the look on grandma's face(is that ... morea mustache? is priceless. 20.5" x 16" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Spectacular Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Eagle
Sulup(Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Some mola makers excel at using color. Design and spacing to create a design with visceral graphic power. This is a good example. The abstract filler motifs use a wide variety of colors- all mated with red- to make a background that is more than just a background.it's a big part of the visual formula. Oddly, the large eagle is flanked by two sea horses! Note the remarkably dangerous-looking appliqued talons on the eagle. A masterpiece of late-1960s mola art. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 17" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Rare, Early Kit Kapp Collection 1930s-1950s Kuna Mola: Arrows
1930s-1950s Mukan Nasi(Grandma's Arrows) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Everything about this mola tells me it is early.as early as the 1930s. Big size. Early cloth. Wide open spacing around the arrow motifs. Oddly shaped filler motifs aimed every which way(no"picket fence" super-even vertical slits here! Erratic. Uneven cutting and sewing. Bold morsana strip design. A very nice, rare piece that I would not sell except that I have the nearly-identical blousemate to it in my collection also. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 22" x 18" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola: Puberty Festival
Kantule-Gan Chicha(Chanters Singing at Inna Puberty Festival) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This very large mola has many signs of early age. Including the cloth used, and the size of the"slit design" filler motifs. It was also well loved, and long-worn, so it has some wear and a couple of patched breaks in the bottom layer of cloth. It depicts three Kantule chanters at a Chicha Fest celebrating a young girl's coming of age. Note that two of the Kantules are holding large three-pronged gourd maracas. I love the abstract representation of the chanters' heads- they remind me of African tribal masks. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 22" x 18" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple ... moreof weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola: Birds In Baskets
Sikwi Naiwar(Birds in Baskets) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Kuna men will sometimes capture rare birds and sell them to tourists or Colombian traders. They store the birds in baskets- which is the subject matter of this mola. It's a very interesting a rare design- note the use of"A" and"V" shapes throughout- and the odd abstract presentation of the head of the bird on the left. Nice color pallet also. I like this one. And haven't seen many, if any, like it. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 18" x 13.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola: Mountain Dogs
Achu Barbat Sikwi(Mountain Dogs and Birds) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. When Kit Kapp sold me this mola he described it as a"Mukan" or"grandmother" mola. Which to him meant that it was made in the 1930s or 1940s. I don't think it's from the 1930s, but 1940s or 1950s is certainly plausible. It uses a lot of early cloth, including the"LBP" Light Balanced Plainweave) that I have come to associate with pre-World War II molas. It also has a number of the weird"embroidery squiggles" that often appear in early pieces- little lines and zig-zags and odd lines that don't really add to the design. A rare and early piece. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 21.5" x 18" A comment on pricing: I believe some ... moreof the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Spectacular Kit Kapp Collection 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola: Deer
Wasa Tummadi(Large Deer) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Big and bold. This mola has a style that is quite unusual- very bold with a minimum of filler elements, and no slit-filler-motifs. It depicts a very large deer, perhaps being stalked by the beast in the upper right corner. Throughout the mola you'll see small"speckles" of embroidery using black thread. I have no idea of the purpose of these random sprinkles, squiggles. But I have seen such things in early molas, so maybe this is even earlier than the'50s.hard to say. A different and interesting piece with graphic strength. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 20" x 16.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far ... moremore valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Parker Neal Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Men In Canoe
Men In Cayuco(Canoe) Abstract Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. I'm not entirely sure what's going on in this one. But it looks like two men in a canoe with another man swimming along side. It's an odd shape- quite square- and with a bold drawing style.it might be from the Bayano Mountain Kunas. The drawing style looks to be early 1960s. From one of the most famous early collections. 15.5" x 15" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Parker Neal Collection Kuna Mola: Famous Kuna Myth
Dragon Eating Moon Myth Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. This mola shows one of the great scenes from Kuna mythology. Where the dragon Achusimatupalet eats the moon(shown here in the form of a rabbit embryo, which the Kuna believes resides on the moon) To the right is a beautifully drawn appliqued tree beneath which sits an Ansu- an evil mermaid from Kuna mythology. Below you'll see another bird, what looks to be a shark and a Kuna albino man shooting an arrow at Achusimatupalet to stop him from from eating the moon. Albinos are known for their night vision, and are relied upon for this nightly task. A great representation of one of the great Kuna myths. 1960s Kuna Mola From Huber Collection: Puberty Feast Dance Scene
Inna(Puberty Festival) Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. A fun Inna festival mola showing two dressed up people dancing. I like the striped hat on the guy. And the weird dog-head floating between the two of them. Note: this might be a scene from a carnival in Colon or Panama City, but I think it's an Inna dance. Great colorful morsana strip at the top. Some abrasion in spots and a couple of splits in the bottom layer of cloth above the two characters. 21" x 17" The Huber Collection. Bob and Marianne Huber started collecting molas in the late 1960s. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: Angels
Ankel(Angels) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. A simple color pallet actually adds to the attraction of this piece. It shows four angels with odd. Hooded heads- flanking four abstract figures of humans who are kneeling and praying. The angels have a freaky Hannibal Lecter feel to them. Unusual piece. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1950s - 1960s: Devil Eagle
Sulup Nia(Devil Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. The imagery on this mola can be interpreted a couple of different ways. One view is that the eage(or is it a dragon? is swooping down and attacking the monkey in the lower-right corner. My interpretation is that the devil-eagle is actually a spirit rising from the monkey. Size. Style and cloth indicate this is probably a 1950s mola, though it could be early 1960s or late 1940s. Early, Damaged Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola: Archaic Frog Design 1940s?
Early. Damaged Noh(Frog Design) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This wonderful. Damaged mola depicts a classic"Rastafarian Frog" one of the earliest designs known. Eleanor York Bell, who collected the earliest molas known, collected on with this design in 1908- a piece which is now lost(the Smithsonian has a photo of it, but her relatives got the mola) The ragged cutting and sewing, the early archaic design and the use of very light balanced plainweave cloth for the base layer all point to an early date. It could be anwhere from the 1930s to the 1950s. Note the frog-within-a-frog design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Marlin and Fishermen
Ulu Machereti Ua Tummadi(Fishermen with Large Fish) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is one big fish. The marlin that the Kuna men have caught is much larger than their boat! Kit Kapp Collection 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Eagle Design
Early Sulup(Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This very rare mola appears to be quite early- I would say 1940s or early 1950s. The overall design is very unusual and the use of long free-standing applique strips is very. Very rare. I believe it may be a"galu" or"kalu" spirit place) mola. It depicts a large eagle, spread-winged above two other eagles- with the three birds forming a diamond-shaped space between them. The entire base layer is made of a very early printed fabric(probably 1930s or 1940s) A rare thing indeed. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 22" x 17" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. ... moreExecution, rareness and provenance. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola: Honey Bees - Great Folk Art
Very Folky Honey Bees Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Big. Colorful and lots of fun, this is a fabulous folk art textile. It depicts two puzzled-looking honey bees- look at the wonderful faces! Loads of early printed cloth- plus very large size- indicate this is 1950s or early 1960s. Cool, incomprehensible embroidered lettering on their chests. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Jungle Lion Design
Achu Barbati(Lion and Birds in Jungle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Very Rare Design. This is a very rare mola design. I sold the blouse-mate panel to this one about eight years ago. And I can't recall having seen another one. It focuses on a large lion beneath a tree laden with multi-colored fruit. Beneath the lion is hat looks like a piano, but is probably jungle plants. The whole scene is flanked by birds on both sides. The color pallet is extreme and daring. Outlining around the birds is very open/bold. A genuinely rare mola. 19.5" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: King of Eagles
1960s Sulup Tummadi(King of the Eagles) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. An eagle so powerful it can grab two animals at the same time. Rich colors and good imagers. 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola, Huber Collection: Sawfish & Submarine
Sawfish& Submarine Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. While the big fish depicted in this early mola is clearly a sawfish. I'm not sure if the boat is a submarine or a trawler- the spout-like device on top could be a smokestack or a periscope. The mola is intricately worked with very early cloth throughout- including a number of printed fabric inserts. But I suspect it is from the'50s or early'60s. It's seen some use, and there's a place where the base layer has worn away. 18" x 16" The Huber Collection. Bob and Marianne Huber started collecting molas in the late 1960s. Winged Nia(Devil) Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber.Similar to Example in National Museum of Natural History. A classic winged-Nia mola from the 1960s. Loaded with color, loaded with character. Compare it to the example collected by F. Louis Hoover in the 1960s, now in the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum collection. Great scary face, cool pointed hat. Lot's going on here. 29.5" x 16.5" The Huber Collection. Bob and Marianne Huber started collecting molas in the late 1960s. 1960s Kuna Mola From Huber Collection: Mythical Beast
Damaged Mythical Beast Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. I once knew the story behind this design. But I can't find the reference in the literature as I write this. A large dragon or winged-animal is posing with a sun-man figure riding it. I think the STMRK is a misspelling of"St. Mark" so perhaps this is a biblical tale. Nicely worked piece with good colors- the owner obviously loved it enough to wear it so much that areas of the base layer wore through compeltely- see photo. 21" x 16" The Huber Collection. Archaic-Style 1960s-1970s Kuna Mola From Huber Collection: Animal Spirits Purba
Purba(Animal Spirits) Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. Very boldly drawn. This mola has a very archaic feel to it and is graphically very strong. It depicts two facing animals- probably lizards- each with a spirit figure(purba) arising from its back. Late'60s or early'70s. Some discoloration- see photo. 17.5" x 15" The Huber Collection. 1960s Kuna Mola, Huber Collection: Dragon Eating Moon
Achusimatupalet(Dragon Eating Moon) Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. A very vivid representation of the Kuna myth of the dragon eating the moon.complete with appliqued label"ECLIPSE DE LUNA. The dragon's undulating neck. Scary face and big teeth are quite convincing. And I like the rare attempt at creating depth perspective in a mola by attaching one leg on top of the dragon's body. There are native Kuna repairs in three places where the base cloth wore out- quite noticeable because of the un-faded black cloth used for the repair. 17.5" x 13" The Huber Collection. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: Abstract Stars
Niswigana(Stars in Heavens) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Probably early'60s. Maybe 1950s mola depicting abstract stars. Very traditional design rendered with soft, mellow colors. 1960s Kuna Mola From Huber Collection: Evil Mermaids
Ansu(Evil Mermaid Devils) Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. The graphic design of this mola is quite intricate. Yet oddly simple, with dark lines that define hair, head, body and feet of the devil mermaids, and then meld into the"pirya" spiritual whirlpool) design between each pair of mermaids. Really cleverly done. Note the yes with radiating arrows emerging from them. There's an obvious tear in upper-right, the visual effect of which could be minimized by mounting and framing. This piece has been in my personal collection for many years. 20.5" x 15" Note about pricing: I'm listing a lot of molas from my personal collection with starting prices that I believe are well below what they are worth. 1960s Kuna Mola From Huber Collection: Rats in Traps
Rats in Traps Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. As is obvious from the graphics of this mola. The Kunas do not like rats.so they trap them.quite successfully. Tuttu(Flowrs) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Red-green two-layer molas often have a visual electricity that is quite powerful- as is the case with this piece. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: Galu or Board Game?
Naibe Galu(Snake Spirit Dwelling) or Board Game Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Kit's label for this mola is"Naibe Galu" Snake Spirit Dwelling) But I'm pretty sure it's actually a representation of a board game from the 1960s- though I'm not sure what game exactly- because I've seen similar designs with different animals and the word"PUZZLE" labeled in applique at the top. It's a fun piece with an unusual design. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1950s - 1960s: Men in Canoes
Ulu Tule Machereti(Kuna Men in Canoes) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Size and cutting style and use of early printed cloth inserts all indicate this is fairly early- as does the simplistic abstracted presentation of the men and canoes. 1960s Kuna Mola From Huber Collection: Psychedelic Bananas, Jaguar with Blowgun!
Weird. Wild Mola With Guns, Jaguars with Blowguns, Hammocks and Bananas Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. One of the wildest images ever found in a mola! I can't explain it- perhaps some Kuna myth.but how many of those involve machine guns? Great graphics. Great colors. Great workmanship. If it weren't for the section missing right below the hammock. 1940s-1950s Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola: Genipa Tree
1940s-1950s Sichi-Wala(Genipa Tree) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. It's big. It's bold. It is very early- early 1950s at the latest. This magnificent mola depicts the Genipa tree- the source for the black dye used to paint Kuna women's noses- and to dye newborn children to prevent them from being attacked by Nias(devils) Drawing and cutting use a very old style with wide channels around the main tree/leaf figures and faceted curves(curves aren't smooth- instead they tend to be a series of angled lines that approximate curves) Base layer of cloth is a very loose fabric that I associate with very early molas. Its very large size is also a sign of an early date. As are the waffle-weave printed fabric inserts used in several areas. Note the varying size and orientation of the"slit" tas tas fillers- they're often so ... morebig they really can't be called slits. Everything about this piece says"early. Some wear and small breaks in the base layer of cloth.
