OLD MOLA FROM SAN BLAS ISLANDS PANAMA VERY FINE QUALITY W/INTRICATE STITCHING
Mola are the iconic craft of the San Blas Islands of the Caribbean coast of Panama. The are made by the Kuna Indian women who inhabit these islands as part of their traditional dress. An authentic mola takes two weeks to six months to make and starts its life as part of a paired set that make the front and back panel of a dress top. They originated in the 19th century as fabrics became more widely available from colonizers and they are inspired by the traditional body painting of the Kuna. Mola are constructed with a reverse applique technique and one of the criteria by which the quality and value of a mola is judged is how many cut-away layers were used in the construction. Other qualities to look for include: originally used as a dress. Not just made for tourists; fineness of stitches and evenness and width of cutouts; complexity of embroidery ... moreand stitched designs; and overall artistry of color and design. Sorry about the reflection/shadow in the pictures. The Mola is perfect. This Mola appears to have about a dozen layers judging from the multitude of colors. The stitches are very fine, virtually invisible. The original Mola were representative of the creativity and pride of workmanship of the women who made them and wore them proudly. You can tell by the very intricate design and multitude of colors as well as the fine quality of the workmanship. This piece was a labor of love. Measures 19 1/4" X 15" This piece was not made for tourists like most pieces you see. The original Mola do not have the large pieces of fabric, minimal colors(which means minimal layers of fabric for the reverse applique technique) and rough stitching. If you want it without the frame the shipping will be free.

21" Antique Nele Nuchu Figure, From Guna Yala Islands (Kuna Yala, San Blas)
I purchased this in the 1980's on one of the islands in Guna Yala. formerly San Blas then Kuna Yala) I was shopping for Mola when I noticed this figure inside the Kuna woman's hut. I didn't know what it was for at the time, it just caught my eye. The Kuna woman said it was not for sale but I pleaded and she relented. Since then I have learned of it's purpose as a Shaman's Nele Nuchu healing figure. Figure wears several different pieces of cloth, including a piece of old mola. Figure also wears several shell/seed/glass bead necklaces. Figure has seed eyes and a piece of silver colored metal nose jewelry. Figure is made from a fairly lightweight wood. The left side of the face is split, it was like that when I purchased it. Split extends down neck to base. Measured at base, split is 2" deep extending to center of wood ... morelog. Figure stands 21" tall and has 14" circumference.

Vintage ANIMALS on MOLA 18x15 San Blas Islands Panama 1965 CALDWELL
Vintage ANIMALS on MOLA 18x15 San Blas Islands Panama 1965 CALDWELL EBAY Images at top left of page will expand more than these. 1965 KUNA INDIAN San Blas Islands Panama MOLAS 15" x 18" ANIMAL MOLA depicts dog and birds Dominant colors: red and black This is a note from the missionary who brought this back as a souvenir for a supporter: In 1965. We led a youth workcamp to Panama where the group built a church. One of our side trips was to four of the 365 San Blas Islands inhabited by the KUNA Indians. Rising at 3:30 am in Colon, we rode a bus to Panama City where we boarded a chartered DC-3 to fly over the Darian Jungle. We landed on a strip of coarse grass and then hiked through the jungle on a narrow footpath. Next we stepped into a motorized kayuko(dugout canoe) for a ride downstream to the sea. Then we climbed aboard the launch ... morePapIgarUlu. As we approached the first island. Solidad Mundinga, we saw coral formations beneath us that made the water change from deep blue to turquoise. We walked barefoot on white sand through the receiving line of school children and past the women and children selling molas, conch shells and necklaces. The chief greeted us in Kuna which was translated into Spanish and English. All around us people were peeking through the cane walls to see the visitors. We continued our visits to three other islands: Mosquito Island. Nalunega and Crti Tupile. We ate barbecued turtle and watched Kuna youth perform native dances to the music of bamboo pipes and maracas. The Kuna men worked in their fields on the mainland. But their women were never allowed off of the islands; thus they spent their time creating these beautiful works of art. These panels of decoration were made to be used as clothing for the women themselves. Here we see the early stages of mola creation The snapshot here shows the women wearing their mola blouses. MOLAS are made by stacking several layers of colored cotton cloth. Then each element of the design is created by"cutting down" to the desired layer of

Antique Mola Folk Art Fabric Panel from Dress Vintage Panama San Blas Islands
Hi. You are bidding on a panel taken from an antique San Blas Islands dress. I sold the other front panel a few months ago. It was similar. This one measures 14 inches by 15 inches. It is old. So it is somewhat old looking, but in good condition. The sewing is spectacular, very detailed. There is embroidery as well. This one is handsewn with some areas of machine sewn. Thank you.

Antique Finely Worked Mola Panama San Blas Islands Folk Art Fabric Panel
Hi. You are bidding on a very old mola. It was one of several I got from an estate of a Central American folk art collector. This one was in a frame. And you can see the black fabric around the edges looks darker because it was tucked into the frame. This one is in good condition. It does look faded. The workmanship is amazing. It is all hand sewn. The size is 12.5 inches by 15 inches. There are many layers of cotton fabric, sewn to create a design known to the San Blas people. I have no idea as to the meaning of this particular mola. Thank you.

An excerpt from a Mola Art Book concerning classification of Mola designs: Many people viewing an abstract or realistic mola express curiosity as to what the motif represents. A newcomer to the field would answer appropriately. It's anyone's guess! However, there is often a definite meaning incorporated into these mystifying designs, although it should be understood that the majority of molas are created without profound thought purely for decorative appeal.
