I'm not sure if the boat is a submarine or a trawler- the spout-like device on top could be a smokestack or a periscope. The mola is intricately worked with very early cloth throughout- including a number of printed fabric inserts. But I suspect it is from the'50s or early'60s. Weird. Wild Mola With Guns, Jaguars with Blowguns, Hammocks and Bananas Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. One of the wildest images ever found in a mola! I can't explain it- perhaps some Kuna myth.but how many of those involve machine guns? Great graphics. Great colors. Great workmanship. If it weren't for the section missing right below the hammock. This would be a very expensive mola, Wowie Zowie. the visual effect of which could be minimized by mounting and framing. Huge 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola From Huber Collection: Sianala Incense Braziers
Big Beautiful Sianala(Incense Braziers) Mola Collected by Bob and Marianne Huber. Modern molas are almost always less than 16" wide. In the 1960s the average width was 19" In the 1920s the average width was 24" the size of this mola. It also uses very fine guazey black base-layer cloth. As is found on many very early molas. But the cutting and drawing on this piece are extremely fine, exhibiting meticulous hand-work- something I normally associate with the early 1960s. There are examples of very finely made molas like this in the Smithsonian collection- that were collected in the late 1930s or the 1940s. My guess is that this piece is from the 1940s.
