Dimensions: ... more7-1/2" L x 3" W x 6" H(19 x 7.7 x 15.2 cm) Weight: 5 lbs. 5 oz. 2 kg. 406 gm. Description: A Taino Zemi Three pointer made of Diorite stone. The trigonolithe has the classic three points with an anthropomorphic face on one side with bent arms underneath and incised design on sides and on the reverse side. Provenance: Ex. Smith collection; presently private collection. New York, N.Y. Taino culture flourished in the Caribbean between c.1200-1500. The arrival of the Spanish in 1492 resulted in its rapid decline but objects such as this striking trigonolitos. Also known as a three-pointer, testify to high levels of craftsmanship. The Taino left no written language so our knowledge about them derives solely from archaeology and the testimonials of the Spanish settlers. As a result, although significant numbers of three-pointers survive, their precise function within Taino society is unclear. The central cone of these triangular objects has been interpreted in a variety of ways. Suggestions include manioc shoots(one of the main crops of the Taino) volcanoes, the roofs of Taino houses, phalluses and the human breast. None of these theories has been universally accepted and the precise origins of the shape are likely to remain a mystery. Despite this many scholars agree that these ceremonial objects were symbols of power and fertility. This seems to be supported by a letter written by Columbus in which he reports on his findings among the Taino, Equally the majority of caciques(chiefs) have three stones to which they and their people have great devotion. One they say is for the fertility of the grain and vegetables that they grow; the next for mothers to give birth without pain, and the third for the water and sun when they have need. The silver on these pieces is not quite sterling(92.5% But rather 800 or 80% silver; a common standard used in serving wear. Vintage alpaca silver& 18K gold plate Yerba Mate tea straw and cup/gourd. This auction is for the vintage tea straw and cup as shown in the photos. The straw has a pierced threaded head which can be unscrewed from the shaft of the straw and is hinged to open up. It is marked on one side'INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA' and'ALPACA' on the other side and the gold coloured sipping end is marked'18K ENCHAP' This is not my area of expertise but from my research I think that Alpaca silver is not actual silver but an alloy of metals put together to look as close to silver as possible. Enchap' seems to mean'wrap around' so 18k Enchap may mean gold plated? or maybe it is solid gold? The gourd/cup is unmarked but also has the appearance of silver or silver plate and both the straw and gourd have some nice chased detail and ... moreare in good condition with no damge and just some age related tarnishing. I am not sure of the date of these pieces as similar items are still being made. Particularly the straws but they certainly have some age and I would think they are circa 1950's but possibly earlier. VINTAGE YERBA MATE GOURD 18K GOLD ALPACCA SILVER GOURD POT INDUSTRIA ARGENTINA Here for auction is a beautiful Argentinian Yerba Mate Gourd Cup or Pot. This is hallmarked on the bottom as Alpaca often referred to as Alpaca Silver and the maker's name. The gold ornamentation looks exactly as 18K Gold should look and whether plated or not shows a gold content when tested. This is obviously handmade and the metalwork is beautiful. For use as a drinking vessel it will need to be properly cleaned or refinished. Other than that this is a beautiful piece of Argentinian handiwork that would look beautiful in any home or office. This straw has a mouth piece that has been covered with an 18k gold sheet. If you check inside the end you'll be able to see where this sheet was rolled over the inner lip. This is different than gold plating. As gold plating is simply dipping or spraying a very thin layer of gold over an item. It also has 18k gold plated mounts ... morewhich include the three rings which stick out from the straw and the upper leaf pattern around the central ring. This straw, along with a second one, were in my grandparents estate. They often pulled these out and told us how this one was over a 100 years old. As this was 50+ years ago I'm guessing the age to be somewhere around the 1800's to early 1900 area. Condition: Very good. The end shows signs of teeth marks. But being such high grade gold this would be normal on an antique piece. The other end shows slight signs of dings around the edges. Nothing detracting but mentioned for accuracy. please see photo's) Measurements: 12.2cm x 2cm. Marks: There is some sort of hallmark where the end joins the straw. But it doesn't appear to be english, instead being a symbol of some sort. Rather like an elongated starfish. Sorry but it didn't show up in photo's. The straw it's self is unmarked but tests for 90-100% silver. I did not test the end as I didn't want to risk getting any of the material into the holes and contaminating it in any way.
