Beautiful Precolumbian Pottery, Ritual Bowl, Chimu Civilization 1100-1400 A.D
This powerfully evocative. Painted ceramic bowl, pre-Columbian, is a find from a recent auction in Paris, France. According to the expert at the sale, it is a ritual object from the Chimu civilization, that flourished from about 1100-1400 A.D. in an area around the post-colonial city of Trujillo, Peru. The bowl is painted with stylized geometric patterns all around the outside. And it gives off a very strong"vibration" as it sits on my mantlepiece. As I compare with examples of pottery from the Wari-Kero people of Peru, I come to the tentative conclusion that the geometric patterns are actually stylized human face, with feathered head-dresses! The bowl measures about 5.1 inches in diameter, and 4.7 inches in height. As you see, it has been re-assembled, skillfully, and it will show very well in your home. This is not a copy or reproduction. ... moreIt is guaranteed as original pre-Columbian art. Documentation from the Paris auction will be included on request. A fine acquisition. Offered at a moderate price point. I'll bring it back with me from Paris to the U.S. on July 1. Shipping for U.S. residents will be $12. And to see what else I have for sale. Please click

ITEM DESCRIPTION Up for your consideration is a very fine piece of pre-Columbian blackware made by the Chimu peoples of Peru. C. 1400- 1580 AD(late Chimu) The Chimu were known for their fine figural blackware, and are thought to have invented the process that is still used and widely collected today by San Illdefonso potters. This piece was acquired from an estate sold through a reputable auction house, and came from a large and important collection of pre-Columbian arts. It is marked on the base"Late Chimu Black Ceramic Vessel from the Area of Trujillo, Peru(ex-German-Granda Collection) The pottery is an accurate and detailed vessel in the form of an owl. There is a single opening at the top. And no pourer. Therefore, this was not likely a functional piece, but used for funerary purposes. This is consistent with the literature,

Chimu Wooden Post (Ex-Museum Collection)
The Chimú were the residents of Chimor. With its capital at the city of Chan Chan, a large adobe city in the Moche Valley of present-day Trujillo in the north of present day Peru. The culture arose about 900 AD, and flourished until the Inca invasion in the fifteenth century. This is a wooden boundary post(though it also closely resembles Chimu loom posts found in some collections) This was formerly part of a US museum collection. And the museum marks are clearly visible. Probably dates from the late Chimu period, and is thus about 6-700 years old. A beautifully carved piece, with all commensurate signs of its age(wearing, chips etc) A bargain at this price. Length 40cm Weight: 500g
