Beautiful! 19th Century Brazilian Slave Penca de Balangandan Silver 900 Fine. You get the item as seen in the pictures. It is in excellent used condition. ... moreFrom an estate find! The main piece that all the charms hook onto is marked “PRATA 900”, there are a couple more markings, but I can’t read them. The fish is marked the same as the main piece. The others are silver. I personally did a light rub test on a rubbing stone with them. Real nice piece! Rare and hard to find especially in this condition! Look at pictures for condition. Rare Mid to Late 19th Century Bolivian Aymara Manta (Ahuayo)
I am offering up for auction a rare. Beautifully woven Aymara textile from Bolivia. It is dyed with vegetal dyes and has been'conservatively' estimated by South American textile experts to have been woven sometime in the mid to late 19th century. It is a women's'manta' or lliclia(pronounced' yeekya' in Quechua or' ahuayo' in Aymara. The pictures do not do this piece justice. Despite 3 very small. Repairable holes, it is in amazing condition for its age. Warp faced plain weave in black and cochineal red dyed hand-spun alpaca or vicuna wool with complimentary bands of warp weave along the outer edge and centre in ochre. Golden brown, indigo, dark blue, white and cochineal. Measures 38" 96 cm. x 40" 1.01m) Bought many years ago at the estate sale of an anthropologist whose research focus from the ... more1930's through to the late 70's was South American indigenous tribal peoples. The Aymara existed in the Andes in what is now Bolivia and Peru for thousands of years. They were conquered by the Incas before the arrival of the Spanish and the Inca nobility originally spoke Aymara before later switching to Quechua. Both languages still survive today. How can we be sure of the age of this piece? Several reasons predominate: 1) The arrival of aniline dyes in South America had a profound effect on the Aymara. Women were quick to use dyes which were easier to produce than the more difficult to produce natural colours. Examples of their weaving collected in the 1880's were already beginning to show evidence of synthetic dyes. None here. 2) More recent examples of Aymara weaving show an increased use of figurative bands(i.e. designs with horses. Birds, flowers etc. The earlier pieces tended to stick to the representational verticality of the world in which they lived( a vast panorama of horizontal levels" according to Aymara historians. For those collectors interested in knowing more about antique Aymara weavings I am including in this auction a rare. No longer available

Mayan Clay Hand Painted Vase-"19th Century"
The Maya were a diverse people whose culture has developed through the centuries. As they developed. So did their pottery. Archaeologists have found stages of commonality between types of ceramics, and these phases coincide with the Mayan timeline. Middle Preclassic(900/800-250 BC) Late Preclassic(250 BC- AD 250)Early Mayan ceramics stemmed from a past that began even years before the Maya became a group. Originally. The early Maya used cut into useful shapes to create vessels to carry liquids and foodstuffs. These portable and durable gourds made excellent containers. The first ceramics closely resembled gourds and many were decorated with rocker stamps and simple slips. During the Late Preclassic period. Many of the ceramics took on appendages of tetrapod mammiform supports. These supports were four legs underneath the pot holding it up. ... moreCharacteristic cream-on-red stripes colored these unique vessels. The pottery of the Maya Early Classic dated from AD 250 to 550. The Maya soon began using polychrome slip paint. Meaning they used many different colors to decorate the pots. This method of decoration became almost homogeneous for Mayan potters, thus signaling the beginning of the Classic Period. The Classic Period of the Maya provided beautiful ceramics in many forms. The lidded basal flange bowl was a new style of potter to add to the already growing repertoire. This type vessel usually had a knob on top in the form of an animal or human head, while the painted body of the animal or human spreads across the pot. Many of these pots also had mammiform supports, or legs. These unique vessels are usually found in great condition signaling a ritual function. The New Spain was part of the commercial route between the Philippines and Spain. Spanish galleons crossed the Pacific Ocean full of Asian goodies. Original Antique 19th Century Colonial Mexican polychrome wood Santo, Trinity
A superb and rare colonial santo. Mexican school, early 19th century. This is a representation of the Holy Trinity(Santa Trinidad' in Spanish) The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit- identified respectively by the All Seeing Eye, the Lamb, and the Bleeding Heart- sit enthroned above the clouds, their feet resting on the obliging heads of angels. Although the Holy Trinity is a common subject in colonial Latin America's religious paintings(known as'retablos' it is quite uncommon to find a sculptural version of this theme. In this beautiful piece the attitude of each figure is distinct and suited to the member of the Trinity it represents. Each delicately painted face is unique and bears a different expression: the Son appears younger and gentler in his manner. The Father slightly older, more rigid and stern, and the Holy Spirit ... moreappropriately pensive, distant and ethereal. The santo measures 17 inches high. 11.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep. Its condition is very good for its age. There are very few missing pieces- the right-hand thumb on the Father, and the Son's feet with their corresponding angels- and the paint remains largely intact in the front of the figures. There is naturally some age-related weathering, very minor in front, and fading of the paint in the back of the santo, but the carving remains as originally intended. Note, in the back, the visible belt on the Holy Spirit and the draping of the cloaks. Some spots on the angel-laden base have lost paint, but the entire piece has been restored and waxed by an expert to preserve it from further weathering. This santo is authentic. It was bought by an experienced collector and restorer of wooden santos in Mexico in the early 1970s. I inherited it. 1 Conquistador Brass Stirrup c. 16th to 19th Century Has Battle Scars
1 Conquistador Brass Stirrup c. 16th to 19th Century Has Battle Scars. Because the Conquistadors used them as weapons on and unhorsed opponent, by kicking them with the blunt end of the boot-like stirrup. They also used them to protect their feet in combat from spears, arrows, sword chops and the like. You can see the wear from rubbing against the elements. Weapons and any form of attack as well as brush along the trail. There is a VII Roman Numeral on the upper edge of the boot of the stirrup, which had been engraved on this one, next to the stirrup strap holder extension. See photo#4. I can see some copper tenting within the brass when held up to screened light, which would qualify it as being bronze. I believe that this one is the mounting, left stirrup. I can see a group of tiny dents inside the boot at the top of the stirrup, where there ... moremight have been a buckle or some kind of ornament on the soldier's boot. Which made those marks. See photo#8. When I tap the stirrup with a metal object, it does clang like a bell, per the quote below, regarding where the makers got the metal to make the stirrups. I found these statements by someone involved with these kinds of Conquistador Antique Stirrups: Another contribution(thank you) said: At flea market years ago. I was told that there are two versions of these stirrups. The Conquistador model stirrups were made from melted church bells and have a nice"ring" to them when thumped. The other, slightly plainer model was made from melted down cannons b
