Before stirrups most equestrian cultures used no support for the feet at all. There are records of a loose surcingle being employed behind the girth. Into which the feet could be tucked. Toe stirrups(loops of rope ... morewhich held the big toe) were first recorded in Northern India in the 2nd century BC, their use was somewhat limited by climate and footwear. The first stirrups designed to take the entire foot were probably single mounting stirrups recorded in China in the 4th Century AD. The mounting stirrup was easier than using a stool to mount and safer than vaulting on when fully armed(Cambyses, king of Persia stabbed himself while mounting when fully armed in 522 BC- A.D.H.Bivar, The Stirrup and Its Origins. Oriental Arts, n.s. 1(1955) 61-68. Paired stirrups were first recorded in the 4th Century AD on a Chinese pottery horse and a stirrup has been found in a 4th Century Chinese grave. Their use spread through Central Asia and into Europe by the 8th century AD. The stirrup revolutionized riding and warfare. It allowed cavalry to ride further and faster, heavy cavalry and the use of lances developed, as did light cavalry and mounted archers. It was in Byzantine times when some elements like the saddle, stirrups, spurs, bits and bridles became popular and their use spread throughout Europe. This style of Stirrup most likely evolved in Europe during the days of Kn

ANTIQUE SPANISH CONQUISTADOR BRASS STIRRUPS Signed POSE ~ Horse Head DeSign
I really can't tell you which century these are from. 17th or 18th but I do know they are original and old. They are signed POSE and measure 10" long and 5" Tall. They are made of solid heavy brass. Shipping is included in the price of the item. Makes it easier on all of us. These boot cover stirrups were used to protect soldiers from brush. Branches and other debree that could penetrate their shoes, boots or feet. There are holes cut in the bottom of for water drainage so it would be easy to use the holes for hanging on the wall. Wonderful collectible item for display. I am a real auctioneer with an Auction House and Antique Mall in North Louisiana. It's a great auction but not a hoddy toddy stuffed shirt type. I get the opportunity to work many estates. Liquidations and other venues so I find really cool stuff. You can ... morebid live during our auctions online& we ship worldwide so if you are interested in seeing what I have to offer in our auctions just let me know and I will add you to my email list so you can be notified when we are having our Estate Sales& Auctions. We never send out more than one email per week and it's only to let you know when and where we will be so you won't be spammed with tons of emails) I was a heavy duty eller for many years but I've been off the eBay selling for a while now because I have a lot of issues with their practices but I like money and I like being able to offer cool stuff to others because I find so much of it but we are going to give it another shot& see how it goes. Thank you for looking! Will combine shipping whenever possible. Shipped from Shreveport LA. If you have any questions. Please feel free to ask. Visit me on FaceBook at Shreveport Antique Mall. Even though it says we do not accept returns, the reason is because most of these things come from estate and we don't know a lot about them so you must look at photos for anything you might see could be a problem so we can address it but if there is an issue or problem we will

South American Spanish Colonial Conquistador Ornate Bit & Rawhide Bridle
South American Spanish Colonial Conquistador Ornate Bit& Rawhide Bridle The Headstall/Bridle is 100% plaited. Sewn and braided rawhide- not a stitch of thread on it, all button-closures, FANTASTIC thick round-plait reins, and the bit. The bit is unique and ornate and beautiful all at once- the beaded ring is the lower curb or bosal; it is Bronze, I believe, or Mexican(Nickel) silver, and HEAVY and completely hand-worked in designs. The nose band DOES have a loop for a pisador, which got me confused as to origin. Even the lip chain was hand-made link by link. I would love to see it sell to someone who knows it's probable history and can enjoy it for the Artwork it is. LOTS of pics; click on one to scroll thru them all. Thank you! Purchased for $600 18 years ago as a wall hanging. MUST SELL MAKE OFFERS! Danni Creamer. The historian ... moreI contacted, says this, At El Rancho de las Golondrias outside of Santa Fe we saw that bit. It was there as a prop in one of the buildings. It's a living museum of a Spanish settlement dating as far back as the early 1700s, I would assume that is a Spanish bit that was once used by the conquistadors. Incredibly kept, the rawhide is in fabulous shape.

1 Conquistador Brass Stirrup c. 16th to 19th Century Has Battle Scars
1 Conquistador Brass Stirrup c. 16th to 19th Century Has Battle Scars. Because the Conquistadors used them as weapons on and unhorsed opponent, by kicking them with the blunt end of the boot-like stirrup. They also used them to protect their feet in combat from spears, arrows, sword chops and the like. You can see the wear from rubbing against the elements. Weapons and any form of attack as well as brush along the trail. There is a VII Roman Numeral on the upper edge of the boot of the stirrup, which had been engraved on this one, next to the stirrup strap holder extension. See photo#4. I can see some copper tenting within the brass when held up to screened light, which would qualify it as being bronze. I believe that this one is the mounting, left stirrup. I can see a group of tiny dents inside the boot at the top of the stirrup, where there ... moremight have been a buckle or some kind of ornament on the soldier's boot. Which made those marks. See photo#8. When I tap the stirrup with a metal object, it does clang like a bell, per the quote below, regarding where the makers got the metal to make the stirrups. I ship by FedEx shipping, which is including insurance. Same cost to all buyers within the 48 contiguous states of the U.S. If you live outside those parameters, please, send your zip code or country for an estimate of shipping to your home or store, including insurance. FedEx Smart Post is estimated at $9.59, while FedEx Ground is $14.19, and it is a little faster. While doing some research online. I found these statements by someone involved with these kinds of Conquistador Antique Stirrups: Another contribution(thank you) said: At flea market years ago. I was told that there are two versions of these stirrups. The Conquistador model stirrups were made from melted church bells and have a nice"ring" to them when thumped. The other, slightly plainer model was made from melted down cannons b
