PRE COLUMBIAN ECUADOR POTTERY HEAD FRAGMENT JAMACOAQUE This is a very expressive piece of authentic Pre Columbian pottery with a very realistic face almost ... moreGrecian looking. Very heavily lidded eyes in a peaceful expression. The figure is wearing a headdress that is more like a cap over the hair with decorative earrings that have deep notches with some remaining red paint. Hopefully these are not the ears. It looks like button earrings in front and the figure has a nose ring and a lip plug. The back shows the remains of part of a necklace. It measures 2 1/2 inches high and will stand upright by itself as the circular base with a hole in it is flat. The head is hollow and has evidence of heavy black mineral deposits on one side. Basic clay color is a gray beige. There are also traces of red paint on the face. Keep in mind that this is not a burnished surface and the texture is rough and the close up photos are to show condition. At a regular viewing distance the head seems more normal looking and the condition is very good with very little damage and no repairs. It is from a private collection and is Jamacoaque culture.

For your consideration is a very nice pottery vessel from Peru depicting a monkey clinging to the stirrup spout of a large beaked tropical bird vessel. ... moreThere is a few tiny little miniscule chips to blackened painted covering of the terra cotta pottery. It measures right under 8 inches tall& 7 1/2-inches wide. Very unique in design. Stamped on bottom is replica museo arqr. larco u in a squared design. Copy and pasted from Wikipedia: Huaco or Guaco is the generic name given in Peru mostly to earthen vessels and other finely made pottery artworks by the Indigenous peoples of the Americas found in pre-Columbian sites such as burial locations. Sanctuaries, temples and other ancient ruins. Huacos are not mere earthenware but notable pottery specimens linked to ceremonial, religious, artistic or aesthetic uses in central Andean, pre-Columbian civilizations. The Huari(Wari) Along with the Nazca, the Moche and others, were among the major creators of figurines who passed down through history their unique skills in ceramics. Kuna Indian Weird Bird Mola-Panama #29950
If you have questions. Please feel free to call me on Skype. Click on the images above for larger views) We recently returned from Panama with a ton of molas. Following a trip we sort the treasures and of course we find a few molas that don't make the cut. So we offer them so folks can get a deal. This mola has both hand and machine stitching. To the purist that is anathema but to someone that just wants a beautiful mola. well. We're talking bargain. Click above for the larger photos. The Mola Story A short 30 minute flight from Panama City will take you several centuries back into the past. As you visit the San Blas Islands of the Kuna people, who still keep their old lifestyle and traditions. The Archipelago is composed of over three hundred islands. Some inhabited, some not, some named others remaining nameless to this day, all ... moreof them surrounded with crystal clear waters. It is Paradise found. The Kuna people wear dresses adorned with hand made molas. As well as colored bead ornaments on their wrists and ankles. Chains, pectorals, a red headress, and gold noserings complete their every-day attire. Your adventure at San Blas could be a stay at an uninhabited island. A fishing tour, dancing and traditional rites, diving and spear-gun fishing, the enjoyment of the crystalline waters or merely the peace of a hammock swung by the wind. But to complete your visit you will undoubtably purchase a souvenir mola to remember your adventure. Molas are undoubtedly the most famous art produced in Panama. The Kuna women have been sewing these works of art for years. They incorporate them into their clothing. Usually with one mola serving as the front of the blouse, and another for the back. The mola is often described as a reverse appliqué. For each color of cloth that you see there is a piece of cloth of that color sewn into the mola. Each mola is hand-stitched with thousand of stitches. The theme of the mola is determined by the imagination of the artist. Once assembled. They are placed on both the lower fron

Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Wekko Bird Design
Wekko(Snake Killing Bird) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Very Rare Variation. This is the only wekko mola using this design variation that I know of. Rendered mostly using two layers and two colors. It is a more abstract depiction of the bird, and especially of the snake. Note the head of the snake is entirely abstracted- it looks sort of like a big fork with a tongue. I particularly like the minimalist use of atlernate cloth colors for the birds' eye and comb, and for the snake's tongue. Great design. Great rarity. Great provenance. Plus it kept it's ruffle at the bottom! 18" x 17" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Execution, rareness and provenance. But I want to start at a low price and let ... morethe market decide how much they're worth. Good luck! The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. Mola Art from the San Blas Islands. Please note that by bidding on this mola. You grant me the right to use its image in the production of a book and web site on mola art. Thanks for reading.

Parker Neal Collection Child's Kuna Mola: Bird in Tub
Bird in Tub( Child's Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. A big bird. With a WILD gigantic embroidered eye and a necktie sitting in some sort of tub or boat with two masts and numerous pennant-flags- and no, I have not seen one before this. Size indicates it was a child's mola. Probably late 1960s. Good condition. From one of the most famous early collections. 15" x 14" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Is one of the most important mola books ever written. Ann Parker and Avon Neal were a couple who teamed together to write a number of books on folk art. They made numerous trips to the San Blas Islands, starting in 1965. Their focus was on"story telling" molas, with a particular emphasis on acculturated molas that found their inspiration in western culture- magazine ... moreads, billboards and comic books. I have the privilege of helping Ann Parker sell a number of the molas from their collection. Kuna Art Society Web Site. For more information about molas and Kuna art. 1950s-1960s Kuna Child's Mola Blouse: Abstract Bird
Early(1950s-1960s.maybe 1940s) Kuna Child's Blouse. Abstract Bird Design. This one's a challenge. The rare. Highly-abstract design, the skinny sleeves and fairly early cloth all indicate a possible early date- maybe even 1940s. But the thin outlining and high-level craftshmanship would argue for a later(1960s) date. I think it could be either- because a number of 1940s molas with fine workmanship are known. The low intro price will let the market decide how early it is. Acquired from a leading New Mexico collector of Kuna art. Note damage to the yoke. Mola panels measure 15.5" x 14" For more information on molas. Check out the Kuna Art Society page on Facebook.

Abraham kept some of his favorite examples that are listed here. The pieces have been in storage since the shop closed in 1976 and have not seen the light of day until now. You will find some of the pieces still retain Abraham’ s price tags and notes from the 1970’ s period. I have not seen a legitimate jade collection of this quality come up for auction on eBay for a very long time. Possibly ever. As my auctions have run for over 12 years selling online all the items will be sold to the highest bidder with Absolutely No Reserves. I ask that you only bid on the items if you are very serious about purchasing them. If you have any questions in regards to the items or payment please do not hesitate to email me. 1960s - 1970s Kuna Child's Mola Blouse: Bird Spirit Fortress
Sikwi Galu(Birds' Spirit Fortress) Kuna Mola Blouse. The green-black-red color combination of this mola blouse works very well. Delivering a strong graphic impact. Note that the birds on one side use a different red cloth than the jungle-maze that forms the galu around them- so that over time the cloth faded to a pinkish red that makes the birds really jump out of the design. Really very beautiful. Excellent craftsmanship and condition. Mola panels measure 19" x 13" Note about pricing: I'm listing a lot of molas from my personal collection with starting prices that I believe are well below what they are worth. I will let Ebay buyers determine their real value. Have fun bidding! For more information on molas. Check out the Kuna Art Society page on Facebook.

Molas have their origin in body painting. Only after colonization by the Spanish and contact with missionaries did the Kuna start to transfer their traditional geometric designs on fabric, first by painting directly on the fabric and later by using the technique of reverse application. It is not known for certain when this technique was first used. It is assumed[by whom? that the youngest molas are between 150 and 170 years old. As an inspiration for their designs, the Kuna first used the geometrical patterns which have been used for body painting before. In the past 50 years, they also started to depict realistic and abstract designs of flowers, sea animals and birds. Depending on the tradition of each island, Kuna women begin with the crafting of molas either after they reach puberty, some even at a much younger age. Women who prefer to dress in western style are in the minority as well as in the communities in Panama City. Molas have such an importance for the Kuna and their traditional identity that th
Silver Piece with Human Legs and Bird Handles and Lid
Don't know what you would categorize this as. But it is unique. Approx. 6" High. I took this to the Antiques Roadshow when it came to town a few years back, and they believed it was from Peru. They said it was low grade silver, and valued it at $225. Does have a small dink, but nothing serious. The other piece you see is one I shined up and sold here about 6 mos. ago, but you can see how shiny you can get it. I got them both together, but only have the one for sale. Posted with

This is a really nice piece that is well carved and unique. The piece is in good condition. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Bird Galu Spirit Fortress
1960s Kuna Mola- Spirit Fortress for Birds. Collected by Kit Kapp. Molas that depict animals within geometric objects- in this case a circle- are often"galu" or"kalu" molas. A galu is a spirit resting place or a spirit fortress located in another layer of existence. This example shows numerous surrounding birds in a maze-like configuration where birds and feathers intermix with leaves and branches. Very cool imagery. Excellent workmanship. I really like the two small areas where"random embroidery" has been used. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Intricate Bird Maze - Sun Faded
1960s Kuna Mola- Intricate Bird Maze. Collected by Kit Kapp. The detailed imagery in this mola is remarkable- one of the better examples of a maze mola I've seen. Branches magically transform into bird feet or feathers. Really well done. Including great facial embroidery on the bird heads. Obvious strong sun fading on top half. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Cat-Bird
1960s Kuna Mola- Cat-Bird Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. Three very folky hybrid cat/bird figures dominate this 1960s mola. All three birds have fabulous bug-eyes. T-shaped noses, elaborately embroidered faces and, best of all, neckties. The center/main bird also shows very sharp looking teeth and two-dimensional legs that look like they were tacked on like paper-doll parts. A good example of Kuna textile folk art. This piece was in storage since 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. 20" x 16" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats, as well as figures representing animals and birds both solid and hollow. This superbly modeled and quite beautiful, ... morehollow archaic figure depicts a stylized standing bird. It measures 3.5 inches in width by 3.5 inches in depth by 1.75 inches in height(8.89 cm by 8.89 cm by 4.44 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics. The famous mural artist Diego Rivera began his collection of Mexican pottery with small Colima figures- the collection later grew into a national treasure which was eventually housed in the Rivera Museum in Mexico City.
