Very heavily lidded eyes in a peaceful expression. The figure is wearing a headdress that is more like a cap over the hair with decorative earrings that have deep notches with some remaining red paint. Hopefully these are not the ears. It looks like button earrings in front and the figure has a nose ring and a lip plug. The back shows the remains of part of a necklace. It measures 2 1/2 inches high and will stand upright by itself as the circular base with a hole in it is flat. The head is hollow and has evidence of heavy black mineral deposits on one side. Basic clay color is a gray beige. There are also traces of red paint on the face. Keep in mind that this is not a burnished surface and the texture is rough and the close up photos are to show condition. At a regular viewing distance the head seems more normal looking and the condition is very good with very little damage and no repairs. It is from a private collection and is Jamacoaque culture.

I inherited these pieces- and I sadly don't know how old they are or where they came from. They look Latin American to me and OLD. this one is very complete and does work. Although I am not very musical. He stands about 3 inches tall and is 2.5 long. There are 6 holes on his back for playing and the hole on his tail for blowing in and a larger hole on the bottom to release airflow. Really interesting piece! It was bought many years ago in Guyana and more specifically the Wai Wai tribe. The Wai-Wai(or Waiwai) reside in the north central area of the Brazilian Amazon close to the border of Venezuela and also in Guyana This is a stunning piece that is in good shape with little age wear. This fine old comb has a Bird Bone back that all the comb teeth and mounted into. Take a good look at the workmanship/artistry involved in the making of this piece it is amazing. It is about 7.25" long overall ... moreand the teeth are about 2.5" long including the woven part. All in great shape with little age wear. We recently bought a small collection of wonderful African and South American Tribal pieces that we are listing. This collection was bought from a long time collector of fine Ethnographic Tribal Items. This piece and quite a few others that we bought are from the estate of Erica Deichmann the world famous New Brunswick Potter. In 1964 Erica married a renowned New Brunswicker. Milton Fowler Gregg, a winner of the Victoria Cross during the First World War. At the time of their marriage, Milton was serving in Guyana as Canada’s first High Commissioner there. They returned to Canada in 1967 and continued to pursue mutual interests. They travelled widely and she continued to add to her fantastic collection that she started in Guyana. These pieces have been in two private collections since they were brought back and are now for the first time being offered for sale. We are not experts in this field and may not be calling the items by there usual names but we do know the history of the collection and can see the quality and age of the items. Beautifully hand crafted on hide with native dyes and beads,nuts etc.It is a used piece,there is some water stains on the left side of the vest. There is a loop on top for placement over the head. Bolivia and Peru historically fastened their shawls with beautiful clasps called tupos. The tupo design usually identifies the wearer's area of residence and is an important part of cultural identification for Andean women and girls. This lovely tupo is formed from silver and the hand hammered"spoon" has a beautifully finished edge. The detail is lovely with a feathery design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Wekko Bird Design
Wekko(Snake Killing Bird) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Very Rare Variation. This is the only wekko mola using this design variation that I know of. Rendered mostly using two layers and two colors. It is a more abstract depiction of the bird, and especially of the snake. Note the head of the snake is entirely abstracted- it looks sort of like a big fork with a tongue. I particularly like the minimalist use of atlernate cloth colors for the birds' eye and comb, and for the snake's tongue. Great design. Great rarity. Great provenance. I have looked and looked across the internet to try and work out where it is from but have failed miserably with this one. I purchased it at an auction and it was sold as a speculative lot as the auction house were unsure of what it was. It measures 5" high x 5.5" wide 14" circumference. A really unusual jug to treasure.

This is a very early example of primitive Columbian art. The bird measures approx. 4-1/8" wide X 3.25" front to back X 3.5" tall. The whistle has a great sound and works will. The bird is marked with a white piece of paper on the bottom. The bird is in very good condition for its age with only minor wear. Bird in Tub( Child's Mola- Collected by Ann Parker and Avon Neal. A big bird. With a WILD gigantic embroidered eye and a necktie sitting in some sort of tub or boat with two masts and numerous pennant-flags- and no, I have not seen one before this. Size indicates it was a child's mola. Probably late 1960s. Good condition. From one of the most famous early collections. 15" x 14" Collection of Ann Parker and Avon Neal. Molas. Folk Art of the Cuna Indians. Is one of the most important mola books ever written. Ann Parker and Avon Neal were a couple who teamed together to write a number of books on folk art. They made numerous trips to the San Blas Islands, starting in 1965. Early(1950s-1960s.maybe 1940s) Kuna Child's Blouse. Abstract Bird Design. This one's a challenge. The rare. Highly-abstract design, the skinny sleeves and fairly early cloth all indicate a possible early date- maybe even 1940s. But the thin outlining and high-level craftshmanship would argue for a later(1960s) date. I think it could be either- because a number of 1940s molas with fine workmanship are known. The low intro price will let the market decide how early it is. Acquired from a leading New Mexico collector of Kuna art. Note damage to the yoke. Sikwi Galu(Birds' Spirit Fortress) Kuna Mola Blouse. The green-black-red color combination of this mola blouse works very well. Delivering a strong graphic impact. Note that the birds on one side use a different red cloth than the jungle-maze that forms the galu around them- so that over time the cloth faded to a pinkish red that makes the birds really jump out of the design. Really very beautiful. Excellent craftsmanship and condition. Don't know what you would categorize this as. But it is unique. Approx. 6" High. I took this to the Antiques Roadshow when it came to town a few years back, and they believed it was from Peru. They said it was low grade silver, and valued it at $225. Does have a small dink, but nothing serious. Antique terracotta bird ocarina flute whistle sculpture
This terracotta ocarina is in the shape of a bird. Possibly a toucan. It is 4 ½ inches long, 3 ¾ inches tall and 3 inches wide. The piece is most likely from Costa Rica. It does appear to be old and may be pre Columbian. One of the feet and one of the wings has chips. There is a chip and a small crack on the mouthpiece. There is general wear.

This is a really nice piece that is well carved and unique. The piece is in good condition. There does appear to be some green filler in a small area(see photo) This could be a quetzal bird that is a common theme in Guatemalan art; however I am not sure. Cocobolo Wood Carving of a Bird Sipping Water, Vintage
This wonderful long necked bird. Maybe a crane or ibis, is carved out of a single piece of cocobolo wood, showing beautiful wood grains and details in the clawed feet clutching a branch which develops into two large water leaves. The slender bird's beak is dipped into the water below. He sits apx 8" L x 5" W x 9.5" H. Perfect display size for a tabletop or bookshelf. 1960s Kuna Mola- Spirit Fortress for Birds. Collected by Kit Kapp. Molas that depict animals within geometric objects- in this case a circle- are often"galu" or"kalu" molas. A galu is a spirit resting place or a spirit fortress located in another layer of existence. This example shows numerous surrounding birds in a maze-like configuration where birds and feathers intermix with leaves and branches. Very cool imagery. Excellent workmanship. T-shaped noses, elaborately embroidered faces and, best of all, neckties. The area known archaeologically as West Mexico has long been recognized as a region of beautiful ceramic sculptures. Manifestations of a reverence for ancestors and a belief in the power of symbolism. These traits are recognized as characteristic of the cultural development of the region during the period from 300 B.C. to 400 A.D. the time of the Colima culture. Colima is best known for its finely finished red burnished effigies, both of humans and animals, especially dogs, and the solid small unburnished figurines, commonly called Colima flats, as well as figures representing animals and birds both solid and hollow. This superbly modeled and quite beautiful, ... morehollow archaic figure depicts a stylized standing bird. It measures 3.5 inches in width by 3.5 inches in depth by 1.75 inches in height(8.89 cm by 8.89 cm by 4.44 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with a Pre-Columbian dating, but generally is in very good condition. It also comes with a specially designed, hand-made iron museum display stand for display. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a superb addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian ceramics.
