This is an original vintage hand-glass-beaded and shelled necklace/collar created by the Maasai Tribes people of Kenya or Tanzania. It was hand-crafted and is approximately 10" in circumference and 32" in length. The metal clasp on the collar is intact. My notes only indicate this came from the Maasai so any other expertise/suggestions available here on EBAY would be gratefully appreciated. Condition is very fine although there is natural wear and tear as this is a tribal artifact with some obvious use. Description: A gorgeous graduated strand clay bead necklace. Artistically hand-crafted during the late Ban Chiang period, simplistic in art form, yet symmetrically crafted with a harmonious balance of oval and geometric shapes, complimented by smaller barrel shaped quartz aggregrate stone beads of various sizes and tones. The exact age of these beads is unknown, but stylistic considerations indicate an age from about 300A.D. to 200 A.D. approximately 1800 years old. Necklace consists of antiqued gilt brass metal with mottled green beads. Porcelain, faux glass pearls and enameling. The pendant is porcelain with transfer portrait of a lady. Overall condition is very good vintage with some wear to the portrait pendant near the mouth and on the reverse surface. Pendant drop segment measures 1 5/8" in width and 2 3/4" in height. The western Pueblo. Native American cultures located in the southwestern United States. Include Hopi. Zuni. Tewa Village(on the Hopi Reservation) Acoma Pueblo. And Laguna Pueblo. Although not worshipped. Each kachina is viewed as a powerful being who, if given honor and respect, can use their particular power for human good, bringing rainfall, healing, richness, or protection. There are two types of kachina doll eyes: painted eyes. Which can be round, rectangular, pot-hooks, or half-moons, and pop eyes, which are carved of wood and then attached to the doll. Additionally. There are two types of doll mouths. The first is the painted mouth, which can be either rectangular, triangular, or crescent shaped. The other is the carved mouth, of which there is either a horizontal mouth with a wide or narrow beard, a beak that is turned up or down, ... morea tube or a short snout. On the doll’s head one will find either bird wings. Ears(which are typically large and red) corn-husk flowers, hair, feathers, or horns. Kachina dolls can also carry accessories including hand rattles made from gourds. Bows and arrows, branches of Douglas fir, staffs, scissors, crooks with children, and colored corn. This Kachina has pop eyes– a beak mouth. And horns. It also has individual fingers carved holding the rattle and bow– a distinct indication that it is an authentic Kachina(rather than a blob or indistinct fist) and holds a rattle in the right hand and a bow in the left. The base contains writing stating“Sun Buffalo” And signed with the name Shelton Talas. The figure is 16 inches tall, and stands with one leg raised on a solid base. Uncles usually gave the kachina to girl children. Often during the kachina ceremony and dances. You can give your niece or daughter this kachina doll appraised at $700.00. There is also a contemporary tightly beaded necklace with three medallions included as a special gift appraised at $300.00. It is a beautiful way to begin your own family tradition.
