They are best known for their distinctive monochromatic pottery and fine metal work. The main types of Chimú ceramics are small sculptures, manufactured molded and shaped pottery for daily use and those made for ceremonial use for offerings at burials. The pottery is often in the shape of a creature. Or has a human figure sitting or standing on a cuboid bottle. The shiny black finish of most Chimú pottery was achieved by firing the pottery at high temperatures in a closed kiln, which prevented oxygen from reacting with the clay. I purchased this Pre-Columbian figure in Southern Mexico in 1969. I was told it was found in the Chiapas region. And was believed to be considerably more than 500 years old. Pre-Columbian Mayan Aztec Pottery Figure/Figurine Artifact(Reproduction?) Look
Offering what may be a reproduction of a Pre-Columbian Mayan or Aztec pottery figure/figurine. But I'm not certain of this. You see, there are pock marks and raised pumps in some places on this piece, but I also recall seeing a show about Pre-Columbian pottery figures on National Geographic where there was mention that making molds from existing figures and then making more figures with those molds was not completely unheard of with the Mayan and Aztec peoples, and it was actually a common practice to help the artisans save time and energy. That is how I remember it, and I have a good memory, but you'll have to do your own research on this one. He does look old, for what that's worth; please see all images. He measures 7 inches high at the top of his headress by 3.5 inches across at his headress by 2.5 inches across at his arms ... moreby 2.26 inches deep at his arms, and he weighs right at 1 lb, 4 oz's. His right foot is missing, there is a small, shallow chip to the left side of his nose and there are a few small scratches and scuffs, here and there. Ancient Pre-Columbian COLIMA FAT DOG VESSEL Mexico AUTHENTIC Art Pottery Figure
Colima Dog This is a wonderful Colima figural dog vessel. As found in a local estate and believed to be an ancient piece from Western Mexico, approximately two thousand years old. The dog is fat- or pregnant- with a hollow body in aggressive stance with tail that forms a spout. The dog's eyes and mouth are incised into the clay. Dog effigies such as this were buried in tombs in the belief that dogs were an important guide into the afterlife of the deceased. Both of the dog's ears are chipped; one with minor loss. The other more significantly. Two legs have been re-glued; the repairs are rough and amateur, and the break lines appear to have had some loss and are not well-aligned. The burnished reddish brown exterior is mottled and veined. And the interior is encrusted with mineral sediment. The dog came to me without information on ... moreits history or provenance. The Chimú culture arose around 900 A.D. on the northern coast of Peru in a large adobe city in the Moche Valley. And was conquered by the Incas in 1470 AD. They are best known for their distinctive monochromatic pottery and fine metal work. The main types of Chimú ceramics are small sculptures, manufactured molded and shaped pottery for daily use and those made for ceremonial use for offerings at burials. The pottery is often in the shape of a creature. Or has a human figure sitting or standing on a cuboid bottle. The shiny black finish of most Chimú pottery was achieved by firing the pottery at high temperatures in a closed kiln, which prevented oxygen from reacting with the clay.
