Antique Mexican Carved and Painted Wood Retablo ~ 19th or Early 20th Century ~ Possibly Saint Francis ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height-15.75" 40 cm) Width- 11.5" 29.2 cm) Depth- 1.8" 4.6 cm) DESCRIPTION: Fine old Mexican or Latin American carved. Gessoed, painted and gilded wood retablo in the form of a three dimensional sculptural carved plaque. This piece dates from the 19th or very early 20th century. Is in the 17th- 18th century Spanish Colonial style, and may be a depiction of Saint Francis. The Saint is holding a book and looking upward and a silver halo surrounds his head. The retablo is carved from a single piece of wood(several pieces joined together and then carved from the one block) and has great detail and beauty. The flat background is a fantastic sea and mountain landscape painting ... moremade by inscribing into the paint allowing the silver leaf behind to show through. The Saint is fully carved and detailed with gesso over the wood. Which has then been painted and covered with gold leaf and silver leaf, in the classical Spanish style. The life-like details are amazing and the decoration is ornate. This piece is painted blue on the reverse and outer edges of the raised integrated frame. On the outer side of left edge is a stamped mark in Spanish. Which is a bit hard to read, but looks to be the mark of a guild or Art- artisan's school. Some of the finest retablos and church altars come from these type of artisan's institutes in Latin and SouthAmerican and this is certainly a very fine example of craftsmanship and religious art. AGE: Late 19th or very early 20th century. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Old worn darkened patina. Antique 19in Carved Wood & Plaster MADONNA SANTOS Religious Figure GLASS EYES
Old carved wood and plaster Santos Figure Statue that measures almost 19 inches tall. Glass eyes are inset into the face. Original polychrome paint that has muted with age. Carved detail on black hair. I believe that the figure is plaster over wood. At least there is some plaster covering part of the front. There is a small area(shows white) on the front and with magnification you can see that the plaster or composition materical has chipped away and the wood can be seen beneath. As the paint is mottled. This area isn't terribly obvious. There is also an area at the wrists that look built up a bit and they may be repairs to secure the hands- or the figure may be made this way. I took several photos of that area so that you can judge for yourself. The carved wood hands are each separate pieces from the arms. The right carved wood hand ... moremoves a bit however. It will not come out of the socket(see photos) Thge other hand will not move as much due to the build up of the composition. All repairs- if they are repairs- were made long ago. Antique Mexican Nativity Ox. Hand-carved Wood. This hand-carved nativity ox has a lot of character despite missing some legs and horns, tail, and other features. Wood worm holes dot the ox. He is mounted on a simple, black-painted base. The reddish brown paint has worn away, showing the original wood that the ox is carved from. This piece measures 5 inches high from the bottom of the base. With out the base, the body of the ox measures 2 3/4 inches high by 2 1/4 inches wide and 6 1/2 inches long. Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco (St. Francis)?, Hand Carved Wood Original
Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(St. Francis) Hand Carved Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(Saint Francis) Circa 1800s- early 1900s. Possibly older. Santos are Spanish colonial folk art saints. Bultos are Santos"in the round" I.e. carved from three dimensional cottonwood roots, pine wood, etc. Although today they are commonly defined as being from New Mexico, where they are still made, the art form originated in Spain and hence spread to all of their past colonies(where these older pieces are no longer as common) Provenance: This San Francisco? is most probably from Guatemala; the elderly gentleman collector I purchased him from says that is where he purchased this piece a couple decades ago and he called him St. Francis. However. Another eBay member has written me and insisted that St. Francis would not be holding a book, ... moreonly scholars/theologians would. So perhaps the identification is wrong, I will leave that mystery to the buyer. San Francisco? is executed in the traditional manner: hand carved wood with pegged together arms/appendages, pegged onto a stand; covered in gesso, hand painted, and varnished(probably with pine sap) He appears to have been pegged at the waist also(quite common) The waist joint is barely visible and still very tight. Condition: He shows the very typical wear and tear of age: rubbing off and/or chipping of the paint and gesso. Some crazing/crackling, minor cracking at some peg joints, etc. There does appear to be some white colored glue between the pegged hands and arms. Whether it is original or not I do not know, but it appears to be a more recent repair. He appears far older or much more used/touched or weathered than my San Pedro listing from the same collection, as much of his paint and gesso are worn down to the dark wood underneath. Size: The full statue measures 11 ½ in high by 4 in wide.
