How the wax remained stable long enough to cover it with tumbaga is unknown. Two Pre-Colombian Mayan Artifacts from Mexico, Spindle Whorl Bead & Idol Head
I spent the summer of 1973 in Mexico City. A gentleman I met there had found these on his family farm outside of the city. The spindle whorl bead measures about 1" diameter and about 3/4" tall. It has a nice design carved into the sides. The center hole is still filled with Mexican soil. It appears. The votive idol head measures 2" long by 1" wide. Unfortunately it was broken in half at one time and glued back together, which is more obvious from the rear.
