Here we have a Maya carved stone artifact that is over 1500yrs old. Excavated in the Yucatan in the 1920's. This piece comes from the estate of a well known archaeologist. It has some weight to it and weighs a couple pounds. Measures~approx- 5 inches wide and is 2 3/4 inches high. Will make a nice addition to your ongoing artifact collection. Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(St. Francis) Hand Carved Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(Saint Francis) Circa 1800s- early 1900s. Possibly older. Santos are Spanish colonial folk art saints. Bultos are Santos"in the round" I.e. carved from three dimensional cottonwood roots, pine wood, etc. Although today they are commonly defined as being from New Mexico, where they are still made, the art form originated in Spain and hence spread to all of their past colonies(where these older pieces are no longer as common) Provenance: This San Francisco is most probably from Guatemala; the elderly gentleman collector I purchased him from says that is where he purchased this piece a couple decades ago. He is executed in the traditional manner: hand carved wood with pegged together arms/appendages. Pegged onto a stand; covered in gesso, ... morehand painted, and varnished(probably with pine sap) San Francisco appears to have been pegged at the waist also(quite common) The waist joint is barely visible and still very tight. Condition: He shows the very typical wear and tear of age: rubbing off and/or chipping of the paint and gesso. Some crazing/crackling, minor cracking at some peg joints, etc. There does appear to be some white colored glue between the pegged hands and arms. Whether it is original or not I do not know, but it appears to be a more recent repair. He appears far older or much more used/touched or weathered than my San Pedro listing from the same collection, as much of his paint and gesso are worn down to the dark wood underneath. Size: The full statue measures 11 ½ in high by 4 in wide. San Francisco's body measures 9 ½ in. high(from robe bottom to top of head) by 3 in wide(from hand to hand) The base measures 3 7/8 in. long by 3 in wide by 2 in. tall. Mexican or New Mexican Bulto- Altar ~ 19th Century ~ Spanish Colonial Painted& Carved ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Height- 19" Width- 8.75" Depth- 5" DESCRIPTION: Very fine antique Mexican or New Mexican altar with carved figures and profusely painted with Christian- Spanish Colonial imagery. The altar is in the form of a Cross mounted on a stepped pedestal base and there are two carved and painted praying figures attached to the base at the bottom of the cross. Possibly Adam and Eve. The entire front of the piece is painted with images. As you can see. A crucified Jesus Christ is the main image, but there are also images of the Madonna, Saints, all sorts of symbolic tools and instruments, skulls and crossed bones, a deceased person wrapped in red cloth, and at the bottom, eight Anima Solas caught in the ... morefires of purgatory and surrounding a painting of Adam and Eve with the apple tree and serpent. This piece has more interesting images on one piece than I have ever seen. Probably Mexican in origin. But some of the faces look like the New Mexican style by Jose Rafael Aragon and the other Santeros in that Northern area. The piece appears to be quite old and I would guess that ir was made after 1850 but before 1900- maybe circa 1880's. On the unpainted bottom there is a nicely penciled name. Pablo" possibly the name of one of the owners over the years. This is a museum quality example of Hispanic- Latin American- Mexican or New Mexican religious folk art. AGE: 19th Century. CONDITION: Good ethnographic condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Loss of the lower legs and feet of the larger carved figure. Both prongs detach at the middle by removing a wooden peg. The bottom half of each is hollow. 19th Century Large Carved Coquilla Nut Flea Trap A very finely carved Coquilla nut with a Stanhope Optical bijou which was used as a flea trap. In the 18th and 19th Centuries. Hygiene being what it was, these Coquilla nuts were worn around the neck, in the clothing or put in a bed. They were baited with a few drops of blood mixed with some honey or resin and through the holes fleas would enter to become trapped. The trap has a fine screw thread so it can be opened, emptied and reset. The Stanhope optical has the image of a building with some arches but it is not clear. I purchased this mask from the carver at the weekly market in the Plaza in Chichicastenango. Guatemala. It was in the early 1970s. During certain festivals the image of a conquering Spaniard is part of the parade and reinactment of the local history. Rare Carved Brazil Nut Fruit Capsule - Quirky - Treen
A very quirky object indeed! A carved brazil nut tree fruit. Containing brazil nuts. 8cm tall. The upper half has been carved and polished, with four slits having been made to reveal the nuts that we are familiar with inside. The lower part has been left in it's original state. How to classify this? I don't know. Treen? Tribal art? or just a great unusual item. A conversation piece, all three at a guess. If you look on wikipedia for brazil nut there is one pictured. Antique Mexican Carved and Painted Wood Retablo ~ 19th or Early 20th Century ~ Possibly Saint Francis ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Height-15.75" 40 cm) Width- 11.5" 29.2 cm) Depth- 1.8" 4.6 cm) DESCRIPTION: Fine old Mexican or Latin American carved. Gessoed, painted and gilded wood retablo in the form of a three dimensional sculptural carved plaque. This piece dates from the 19th or very early 20th century. Is in the 17th- 18th century Spanish Colonial style, and may be a depiction of Saint Francis. The Saint is holding a book and looking upward and a silver halo surrounds his head. The retablo is carved from a single piece of wood(several pieces joined together and then carved from the one block) and has great detail and beauty. The flat background is a fantastic sea and mountain landscape painting ... moremade by inscribing into the paint allowing the silver leaf behind to show through. The Saint is fully carved and detailed with gesso over the wood. Which has then been painted and covered with gold leaf and silver leaf, in the classical Spanish style. The life-like details are amazing and the decoration is ornate. This piece is painted blue on the reverse and outer edges of the raised integrated frame. On the outer side of left edge is a stamped mark in Spanish. Which is a bit hard to read, but looks to be the mark of a guild or Art- artisan's school. Some of the finest retablos and church altars come from these type of artisan's institutes in Latin and SouthAmerican and this is certainly a very fine example of craftsmanship and religious art. Antique SPANISH COLONIAL POLYCHROME Carved WOOD (2 Figures) VIRGIN MARY QUEEN
Up for your consideration is an ANTIQUE SPANISH COLONIAL CARVED WOOD RELIC. It is POLYCHROME PAINTED. It features 2 figures. One of whom is the CROWNED VIRGIN MARY. They stand at an ALTER with columns on either end. In the center there is a CHALICE with FLAMES. It dates to the 19th century or earlier. The wood piece measures about 8" wide and 2 3/4" deep at the base to 1 1/2" at the top. It stands at about 5 1/2" to 7 1/4" tall. It weighs 1 lb 13 ounces. There is paint loss. Chips and cracks but displays beautifully. It stands on its own despite the missing wood at the back of the base. HARD CARVED (?) SOAPSTONE(?) FIGURINE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN (LATIN AMERICA?)
This auction is for an interesting little sculpture. I judge it to be made of soapstone or some similar soft rock. It appears to depict a Latin American figure but I'm not an archaeologist or anthropologist so.who knows? With the headress and big ear rings it looks like a figure of a Mayan god. This could be of vintage age or it could be a modern rendition of an Inca or Aztec god for all I know. You decide what you think and if it interests you. Please make an offer. The figurine is about 5" tall, 2.5" wide and 1.5" front to back. It weighs.425 lbs. The carving is not fine workmanship so it's hard to tell if there are any chips or flaws.
