Huge 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Eagles, Canoes, Anchors
Sulup Ulu(Eagles in canoes with anchors) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is one of the largest 1960s molas I have ever seen- 24.5" wide! It depicts four eagles. Two on circular motifs and two on triangular designs- all of which Kit Kapp describes as"canoes with anchors. Very colorful, very well made and in overall good condition. 24.5" x 17.5" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Nusa Pokwa - Two Rats
Kuna Mola collected by Kit Kapp- Nusa Pokwa(Two Rats) Rats are very much despised by the Kunas- so why not use their images to decorate one's clothes! Here we have two very large rats on a very large mola- probably made in the 1950s or early 1960s. Note the minimal use of slit-motif fillers- instead most of the fillers are large abstract motifs. A weirdly charming early piece with top-shelf provenance. 21" x 15" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. This on is from the collection of Kit Kapp, who mapped the San Blas Islands from 1960 to 1970, and wrote one of the first English-language books on molas. Mola Art from the San Blas Islands. Racy 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Mating Birds
Sikwi Makket(Mating Birds) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Really a pretty great mola- note the very wide channel around the mating birds and the solo bird at the top(normally such wide channel-outlining is only found in pre-World War II molas) This one is probably from the 1950s or early 1960s. It shows a subject that the Kuna are quite sensitive about- mating- so the artist simple shows the act as one giant bird with two heads and two sets of legs. The liberal uses of old printed fabrics as inserts is a nice touch- as is the spectacular sunburst embroidered eyes on each bird. A rare and collectible piece. There's one area where the base layer wore through. But someone has pulled the hole out of site so it's not noticeable from the front. Cool Folksy 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Jungle Animals
Molia Paibaka(Nine Jungle Animals) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. The renderings of the animals on this mola are really quite cool. Probably agoutis or squirrels. They have feathered tails and wild undulating stripes on their sides. Not a common design. From one of the great early mola collections. 17" x 14.5" The Kit Kapp Collection. 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Hammock Hooks
Kachi-Akke(Hammock Hooks) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. A simple. Beautiful two-layer mola with electric vibrating color combination of green and red. It's an abstract hook, or akke design. Very Rare 1960s Kuna Mola, ex Kit Kapp Collection, Water Buckets
Ti-Pormegana(buckets used for carrying water from mainland rivers daily) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is the first example of a mola with this design that I have ever seen. It depicts eight decorated buckets. Probably made from calabash gourds(but rather too square for that? It is quite large, plus quite"wide" in format- sometimes a sign of an early piece, but this one is almost certainly mid 1960s. Quite good condition and quite rare. From one of the great early mola collections. 21" x 13.5" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Snake-Killing Birds
Wekko Naibe(snake-killing birds) mola collected by Kit Kapp. Deadly snakes are a big part of Kuna life. So they have great respect for the"Wekko" bird, which is known for its snake hunting abilities. Molas from the 1930s depict a similar scene, with birds killing a giant two-headed snake. This pice is almost certainly from the early or mid-1960s. Good condition except for two small holes to the base cloth which have been patched-in and are hard to notice. From one of the great early collections of molas. 19.5" x 16" The Kit Kapp Collection. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Passion Flower
Kusep Tutt(passion flower) mola collected by Kit Kapp. Variations on this design were collected by Lady Richmond Brown in 1922. Kit calls it a passion flower design. And it is almost certainly floral. A classic abstract/floral design, executed in the 1960s. Good condition except for a rough spot on the far-left middle of the piece. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola: Wild Abstract Design
Banderas(Flags) or Nugga Satte(Abstract) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. I've seen this design described several ways. Including"flags, playing cards" or"abstract. I think I might go with"abstract. It is a pretty strange, pretty cool design, executed in the loose style I associate with 1950s(or earlier) pieces. Its low-wide aspect ratio is also something I associate with early pieces. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola: Starts At Night
Niskwa Muttikki(Stars at Night) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. From the first glance. I knew this was a special mola. It just doesn't fit into any of the"typical design categories" one normally sees. The next sing of"specialness" is the cloth- very light and floppy, almost like a handkerchief- nothing like the more robust ottomano cloth molas of the early to mid 1960s. A very interesting, very collectible piece. From one of the great early collections of molas. 20" x 15" The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Sea Devil Dancing With Fish
Nia Temal Purba(Sea Devil Spirit With Fish) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. I've never seen a mola anything like this one. A sea devil(temal nia) is standing on a bridge made of two fish's beaks(or saws or swords) while holding the noses of two other fish- while doing what appears to be an Irish jig! Pretty cool. Pretty different. The winning bidder will be the only one on his or her block to possess such a thing! From one of the great early collections of molas. 19" x 15" The Kit Kapp Collection. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Wekko Bird Design
Wekko(Snake Killing Bird) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Very Rare Variation. This is the only wekko mola using this design variation that I know of. Rendered mostly using two layers and two colors. It is a more abstract depiction of the bird, and especially of the snake. Note the head of the snake is entirely abstracted- it looks sort of like a big fork with a tongue. I particularly like the minimalist use of atlernate cloth colors for the birds' eye and comb, and for the snake's tongue. Great design. Great rarity. Great provenance. Plus it kept it's ruffle at the bottom! 18" x 17" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Execution, rareness and provenance. But I want to start at a low price and let ... morethe market decide how much they're worth. Good luck! The Kit Kapp Collection. Like many of the molas I sell. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Firefans - Similar to Published Example
Pikpi Mu(Firefans with Grandma) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Similar to Example Published in Kapp Book. The first time I met Valerie and Kit Kapp. They were showing me over 100 molas, and I asked them, Is there any piece in particular I should get? Val piped up and asked me if I had a"pikpi" mola, and when I said I didn't she told me I had to have one. This is the one I bought that day. Compare it to the example on page 25 of"Mola Art of the San Blas Islands" and you will see that they are very similar, except in the published example the fans are held upright, and in this one they are facing downward. It has a couple of very small splits in the background cloth, which I tend not not notice unless I hold it up to the light. The color, design and execution are really very good. And the look on grandma's face(is that ... morea mustache? is priceless. 20.5" x 16" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Spectacular Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Eagle
Sulup(Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Some mola makers excel at using color. Design and spacing to create a design with visceral graphic power. This is a good example. The abstract filler motifs use a wide variety of colors- all mated with red- to make a background that is more than just a background.it's a big part of the visual formula. Oddly, the large eagle is flanked by two sea horses! Note the remarkably dangerous-looking appliqued talons on the eagle. A masterpiece of late-1960s mola art. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 17" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola: Abstract Frogs
Noh(Frogs) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. A classic early mola design depicting abstract frogs. This one is quite geometric- very strong graphically. A nice piece. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola: Puberty Festival
Kantule-Gan Chicha(Chanters Singing at Inna Puberty Festival) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This very large mola has many signs of early age. Including the cloth used, and the size of the"slit design" filler motifs. It was also well loved, and long-worn, so it has some wear and a couple of patched breaks in the bottom layer of cloth. It depicts three Kantule chanters at a Chicha Fest celebrating a young girl's coming of age. Note that two of the Kantules are holding large three-pronged gourd maracas. I love the abstract representation of the chanters' heads- they remind me of African tribal masks. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 22" x 18" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple ... moreof weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola: Birds In Baskets
Sikwi Naiwar(Birds in Baskets) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Kuna men will sometimes capture rare birds and sell them to tourists or Colombian traders. They store the birds in baskets- which is the subject matter of this mola. It's a very interesting a rare design- note the use of"A" and"V" shapes throughout- and the odd abstract presentation of the head of the bird on the left. Nice color pallet also. I like this one. And haven't seen many, if any, like it. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 18" x 13.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola: Mountain Dogs
Achu Barbat Sikwi(Mountain Dogs and Birds) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. When Kit Kapp sold me this mola he described it as a"Mukan" or"grandmother" mola. Which to him meant that it was made in the 1930s or 1940s. I don't think it's from the 1930s, but 1940s or 1950s is certainly plausible. It uses a lot of early cloth, including the"LBP" Light Balanced Plainweave) that I have come to associate with pre-World War II molas. It also has a number of the weird"embroidery squiggles" that often appear in early pieces- little lines and zig-zags and odd lines that don't really add to the design. A rare and early piece. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 21.5" x 18" A comment on pricing: I believe some ... moreof the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Spectacular Kit Kapp Collection 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola: Deer
Wasa Tummadi(Large Deer) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Big and bold. This mola has a style that is quite unusual- very bold with a minimum of filler elements, and no slit-filler-motifs. It depicts a very large deer, perhaps being stalked by the beast in the upper right corner. Throughout the mola you'll see small"speckles" of embroidery using black thread. I have no idea of the purpose of these random sprinkles, squiggles. But I have seen such things in early molas, so maybe this is even earlier than the'50s.hard to say. A different and interesting piece with graphic strength. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 20" x 16.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far ... moremore valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: Angels
Ankel(Angels) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. A simple color pallet actually adds to the attraction of this piece. It shows four angels with odd. Hooded heads- flanking four abstract figures of humans who are kneeling and praying. The angels have a freaky Hannibal Lecter feel to them. Unusual piece. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1950s - 1960s: Devil Eagle
Sulup Nia(Devil Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. The imagery on this mola can be interpreted a couple of different ways. One view is that the eage(or is it a dragon? is swooping down and attacking the monkey in the lower-right corner. My interpretation is that the devil-eagle is actually a spirit rising from the monkey. Size. Style and cloth indicate this is probably a 1950s mola, though it could be early 1960s or late 1940s. Note the use of early printed cloth inserts. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 22" x 15.5" NOTE: I WILL BE TRAVELING FROM MONDAY. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Marlin and Fishermen
Ulu Machereti Ua Tummadi(Fishermen with Large Fish) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This is one big fish. The marlin that the Kuna men have caught is much larger than their boat! Kit Kapp Collection 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Eagle Design
Early Sulup(Eagle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. This very rare mola appears to be quite early- I would say 1940s or early 1950s. The overall design is very unusual and the use of long free-standing applique strips is very. Very rare. I believe it may be a"galu" or"kalu" spirit place) mola. It depicts a large eagle, spread-winged above two other eagles- with the three birds forming a diamond-shaped space between them. The entire base layer is made of a very early printed fabric(probably 1930s or 1940s) A rare thing indeed. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola: Honey Bees - Great Folk Art
Very Folky Honey Bees Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Big. Colorful and lots of fun, this is a fabulous folk art textile. It depicts two puzzled-looking honey bees- look at the wonderful faces! Loads of early printed cloth- plus very large size- indicate this is 1950s or early 1960s. Cool, incomprehensible embroidered lettering on their chests. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola: Rare Jungle Lion Design
Achu Barbati(Lion and Birds in Jungle) Mola collected by Kit Kapp.Very Rare Design. This is a very rare mola design. I sold the blouse-mate panel to this one about eight years ago. And I can't recall having seen another one. It focuses on a large lion beneath a tree laden with multi-colored fruit. Beneath the lion is hat looks like a piano, but is probably jungle plants. The whole scene is flanked by birds on both sides. The color pallet is extreme and daring. Outlining around the birds is very open/bold. A genuinely rare mola. 19.5" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: King of Eagles
1960s Sulup Tummadi(King of the Eagles) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. An eagle so powerful it can grab two animals at the same time. Rich colors and good imagers. Well executed with small triangular and rectangular"tas tas" fillers in the eagle's body. Native repair in several areas where base cloth got too thin, and several"Kit Kapp repairs" Scotch tape on the back) for the same reason. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: Lizards Attack Devil
Lizards Attacking Devil Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Really fun and folky. This mola shows a quartet of lizards surrounding a disembodied head of a grinning cat- which I presume is a Nia(devil) image. Niswigana(Stars in Heavens) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Probably early'60s. Maybe 1950s mola depicting abstract stars. Very traditional design rendered with soft, mellow colors. Musem Quality Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: Abstract Flowers
Tuttu(Flowrs) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Red-green two-layer molas often have a visual electricity that is quite powerful- as is the case with this piece. It is also a marvel of cutting and sewing- one of the most finely crafted molas I have ever encountered. The stitches are literally invisible. The curve of the lines almost perfect. Remarkable workmanship. Remarkably preserved. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: Galu or Board Game?
Naibe Galu(Snake Spirit Dwelling) or Board Game Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Kit's label for this mola is"Naibe Galu" Snake Spirit Dwelling) But I'm pretty sure it's actually a representation of a board game from the 1960s- though I'm not sure what game exactly- because I've seen similar designs with different animals and the word"PUZZLE" labeled in applique at the top. It's a fun piece with an unusual design. Base layer of cloth has thinned out and been repaired by Kuna women and tape-secured by Kit Kapp. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 21.5" x 17" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because ... moreof design. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1950s - 1960s: Men in Canoes
Ulu Tule Machereti(Kuna Men in Canoes) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Size and cutting style and use of early printed cloth inserts all indicate this is fairly early- as does the simplistic abstracted presentation of the men and canoes. Nia(Devil) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. One of the very first molas I acquired from Kit Kapp. This one features an elaborate abstract Nia(devil) Very weird/cool iconography with snake-like and bird-like creatures growing out of the body of the Nia- much like pre-Columbian textiles from Nasca or Paracas. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s: Gold Necklace
Ome Olo Winni(Woman's Gold Necklace) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. I am very fond of molas depicting the classic thin gold necklaces worn by Kuna women years ago. They are often so abstract that they don't look anything like jewelry. This one is a really great example from the 1950s or early 1960s. Papa Nognuga(God's Goblets) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Very large for a middle-period mola(it uses cloth typical of 1950s to early 1960s pieces) This mola has a powerful visual presence. The deep black cloth makes the brighter colors really"pop. God's Goblets" is interesting- not sure what Kuna myth is being referred to here. Note that some of the"goblets" look similar to sianala incense braziers used in various Kuna ceremonies. Strong piece. This mola has been in my personal collection for some time.and originally from one of the great early collections of molas. 23" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. "World-Class" Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Mosquito
World-Class Mosquito Mola Collected by Kit Kapp. Molas of this quality rarely come on the market. It combines great subject matter. Spectacular colors and drawing, and impeccable workmanship. For a very similar example see page 198 of Mari Lyn Salvaldor's book The Art of Being Kuna. It depicts a person that appears to be flying though the air while holding a bag with knitting-needle-like objects protruding from it. The person's buttocks are exposed in full glory so that the large grinning mosquito can pierce them with its long proboscis. Below another similar scene is taking place but the person seems to be being chased by a large set of leaves with jaws! The workmanship on the tiny circular"tas tas" fillers must have taken weeks to execute. Fabulous piece. Excellent condition. 19" x 16" A comment on pricing: I ... morebelieve some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Cayuco With Evinrude
Fishing Cayuco with Evinrude collected by Kit Kapp in 1969 in Rio Sidra. This mola is loaded with little details. The hat on the skipper. The"EVINROO" emboidered on the outboard motor. The guy in the front holding a fishing line and wearing a pouch around his neck. And it looks like they might have 10 molas hanging from a line- perhaps to sell? I have no idea why there is an eagle sitting on top of a perch! From one of the great early collections of molas. Still has its original collection tag noting acquistion on island of Rio Sidra in 1969. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Kwilen Dancers - Like Published Example
Kwilen(Dancers) Mola Collected by Kit Kapp. This could be a Kwilen(Kuna dancers) mola. Or it may be depicting performers in a Panamanian festival(Kuna women often depict"Wakkas" or strangers using black cloth, as is the case here) The dancers/performers appear to have large feathered headdresses or hats and colorful skirts. Maracas with human faces float around them. For almost identical examples, see page 178 of Mari Lyn Salvador's book, The Art of Being Kuna. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1960s - Skin Diver? Bowler?
Machereti Fodowe(Man Bowling or Skin Diving) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. For many years I believed that molas with this crouching man design were depicting bowlers- as did Kit Kapp who labeled this one"Machereti Fodowe- Bowler. But last month I acquired a very similar mola from the Kapp collection. Where they man is clearly wearing a swim mask- and it is labeled a skin diver mola. So.you decide. Pretty cool image. Pretty good condition with some native re-stitching. Kit Kapp Collection Kuna Mola 1950s or 1960s - Boxers or Wrestlers
Machereti Jungado(Boxers or Wrestlers) Mola collected by Kit Kapp. Kunas seem to have been captivated by Panamanian boxers. And Kuna women often featured boxers in their molas. This relatively early boxer mola shows two bare handed men going at it. In fact, their colored leggings may indicate they are actually wrestlers. Rare Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Abstract 2-Headed Turtle
Rare Yauk(Turtle) Mola Collected by Kit Kapp. This might actually be a unique mola- I have never seen another with this design. It is an abstract two-headed turtle amids a mase of motifs that can be interpreted either as fish or as islands as viewed from above. Really remarkable imagery on the Yauk with a spider-like abstract medallion in its center. When I first bought it from Kit. Many years ago, I could not see the turtle until he pointed it out to me. A special piece. Early Large Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Abstract Eagle
Very Early Very Large Kuna Mola Blouse With Abstract Eagle Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. Out of storage for the first time in 43 years. This mola was sealed in a box and put in storage by Kit Kapp in 1971- and did not see the light of day until March of 2014. The average 1960 mola was 19" wide. The average in the 1950s was a little larger- 20-21" This example is 23" wide and uses a cutting/sewing style that I associate with very early pieces. I believe it is from the 1940s or early 1950s. It depicts an abstract eagle. But you could interpret the design a number of ways. A very bold and way-cool piece. 23" x 16.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. There's a collection tag on this mola saying it was collected in December of 1970 on Nalu Nega Island. A second tag notes: Moli Mola- an acculturated motif featuring a rocking horse. Stunning Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Healing Arrows
Pretty Great Kuna Mola Depicting"Curing Arrows"Collected by Kit Kapp. Out of storage for the first time in 43 years. Visually stunning. This large mola uses a design that gets numerous interpretations- mountains, trees and arrows. Kit Kapp's collection label calls is"Nasi" arrows) and says it was collected on Tuwala Island on November 5, 1970. I believe it depicts arrows used as"wood medicine" Ina Suar) by Kuna healers(Inatuledi) Color, design, workmanship and condition are all stunning. Great piece. Wild Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Dancing Men With Flags
1960s Kuna Mola With Dancing Men and Giant Flags.Collected by Kit Kapp. Out of storage for the first time in 43 years. Vibrant and full of fun. This mola uses a rare if not unique design. It focuses on two large flags and two dancing men. Note that the two flags are not for any nation or society- instead they depict stars and little people wearing neckties. Instead of the typical slits used for background filler in many molas, this one uses a complex array of croses, stars, small"dots" and miscellaneous abstract designs. Check out the barber pole striping on the morsana strip across the top. Also note the random line of embroidery above the larger man's head- what is up with that? Older molas sometimes use such random, odd, no-contribution-to-the-design squiggles of embroidery. Pretty interesting piece. This mola was sealed ... morein a box and put in storage by Kit Kapp in 1971- and did not see the light of day until March of 2014. 19" x 17.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Devil in Jungle
Very High Quality Kuna Mola Depicting Nia(Devil)Collected by Kit Kapp. Out of storage for the first time in 43 years. This mola was sealed in a box and put in storage by Kit Kapp in 1971- and did not see the light of day until March of 2014. This mola is about the size of a standard mola being made today. But since it was collected in 1970(Kapp collection tag is still attached to back) It must have been a child's mola. I believe it depicts a Nia(devil) in the jungle. He has two snakes protruding from his head(or maybe they're in the background) and he's carrying two large objects that appear to be gourds- it may actually be a yoke of some sort on the Nia's shoulders. The Nia takes the form of Achu, or jaguar. The workmanship and condition are both outstanding. 15.5" x 13.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of ... morethe pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Archaic Animals
Archaic Animal Mola.Collected by Kit Kapp. Out of storage for the first time in 43 years. At first glance I thought these animals were monkeys. But their four-feet-on-the-ground status would argue for some other animal- so I'll let the winning bidder decide what to call them. Very archaic drawing style- note how the reverse space between the fore and hind legs of the animals forms a sort of"bat head. Dramatic colors. Some edge damage that doesn't hurt the overall visual of the piece. Rare Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Helicopter Fish
Helicopter-Fish Mola.Collected by Kit Kapp. Out of storage for the first time in 43 years. Over the years. I can only remember a couple of examples of this mola design, which depicts a large fish with- not wings- but helicopter rotors on it. I would not have know that they were rotors if Kit Kapp's label on another example(probably from the same blouse as this mola) hadn't described them as such. This pieces uses some very early cloth and is probably from the 1950s or possibly earlier. There are some areas of abrasion(see photos) but it shows pretty well. Rare example. This mola was sealed in a box and put in storage by Kit Kapp in 1971- and did not see the light of day until March of 2014. 21" x 16" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than ... morethe opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Abstract Frogs or Devils
Abstract Frog or Devil Mola.Collected by Kit Kapp. Out of storage for the first time in 43 years. Visually stunning. This abstract mola looks quite a bit like a Keith Haring painting. The webbed feet and hands of the beings would indicate that they are"Noh" or frogs, but their general appearance also makes me think"Nia" devils) Very cool, very strong imagery, drawn and cut with a pretty wild, uncontrolled sensibility. A very"painterly" mola. Very strong piece. This mola was sealed in a box and put in storage by Kit Kapp in 1971- and did not see the light of day until March of 2014. 22.5" x 15.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Charming Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Kantule (Chanter)
Kantule(Kuna Chanter) Mola.Collected by Kit Kapp. Out of storage for the first time in 43 years. Kuna chanters. Or Kantules, recite lengthy narratives to assist the spirits in curing diseases. They also perform chants at ceremonies like the Inna puberty celebration, where they wear woven hats with large feathers protruding vertically- as seen on the central character in this mola. Very charming face. Note tiny embroidered mustache- and odd embroidered"squiggles" to right of Kantule. These squiggles have never been explained to me, but they usually appear on early pieces. An excellent example of this fabulous folk art form. This mola was sealed in a box and put in storage by Kit Kapp in 1971- and did not see the light of day until March of 2014. 20.5" x 16" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing ... morein the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Parachutists
Kuna Mola Depicting Three Parachutsts.Collected by Kit Kapp. This is a Kapp mola that has been in my collection for about 15 years. It depicts three parachutists descending to a cheering man or boy on the ground. Big. Bold"tas tas" slit motifs) oriented in different directions, as well as the use of printed cloth inserts, argue for a fairly early date, probably 1950s or early 1960s. Funk, folky piece. 20.5" x 17" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola Blouse - Abstract Houses
1960s Children's Mola Blouse With Abstract Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. Very few complete mola blouses survive from the 1960s- most were dis-assembled to create single panels that were easier to sell to tourists. This example. Based on the size of its sleeves and the uses of applique on the top of the yolk, would appear to date from the 1950s or early 1960s(by the late 1960s many mola blouses started to appear with larger"puffy" sleeves. The simple abstract design, which may represent houses, is visually dazzling. Great colors and condition. Pretty collectible piece. This piece was in storage from 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. Museum Quality Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Anchors
Museum Quality Anchors Mola.Collected by Kit Kapp. This Esnas(anchors) mola has outstanding workmanship. A great color pallet and wonderfully quirky use of embroidery- which shows up randomly, without really contributing to the central design of the piece. I've always been fascinated by this weird/unpredictable use of embroidery. It's normally found on early pieces, but this is clearly late 1960s- so go figure. An exuberant and charming mola with great colors and condition. This piece was in storage from 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. 18.5" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Museum Quality Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Ocean Waves
Museum Quality Ocean Waves Mola.Collected by Kit Kapp. This is a Temal(ocean waves) mola. I very much like Kuna abstract pieces. Especially when they have strong color balance like this piece. It shows very much like an abstract painting. Great workmanship. Like-new condition. Vibrant colors. Kit Kapp Collection 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola - Similar to Published Example
Big 1940s-1960s Kuna Mola- Akkepantur" Symbol of Power and Life.Collected by Kit Kapp. A mola quite similar to this one is published in Kit Kapp's book. Mola Art of the San Blas Islands, on page 40. He describes this as an Akeepantur mola. Based on the Tule(Kuna) symbol used on their flag- a symbol of power and life. This piece's use of early cloth and its very large size indicate an early date, possibly as early as the late 1940s. There are some abrasions and repairs near the bottom of the upper-central design motif. This piece was in storage from 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. 22.5" x 18.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. ... moreExecution, rareness and provenance. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Smiling Lobster
Late 1960s Kuna Mola- Smiling Lobster.Collected by Kit Kapp. This could be a scorpion. But I think it's a lobster- with a remarkable grin on its face. It's interesting how the artist seems to show an internal spine or nervous system in a sort of snake like form. Some native repair to the right side of the lobster body. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Abstract Maracas
Late 1960s Kuna Mola- Abstract Maracas.Collected by Kit Kapp. Remarkably powerful graphics highlight this mola. The abstract gourd/maracas design just jumps out of the black background. Excellent proof that creating great abstract art does not require years in art school and/or alcohol/drug abuse. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Dancers - Great Folk Art
Very Folk-Arty Kuna Mola- Kwilen(Dancers) Collected by Kit Kapp. Very charming. Very folksy, great graphics and color- this is a pretty great mola. It depicts Kwilen(dancers/dancing) probably from a puberty ceremony, showing rows of girls dancing. Probably late 1960s. Great piece. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola - Kantule Chanters
Kuna Mola Depicting Kantules(Chanters)Collected by Kit Kapp. This mola is unusual because of its square-ish format and because of the wide black channels used to outline the main charcters- two Kantules wearing woven hats and holding gourd maracas(and perhaps Orswala staffs) The shape. Wide channels and the use or horizontal slit fillers(versus the vertical slits found in most molas from the late 1960s onwards) lead me to believe it is from the 1950s or early 1960s. 17.5" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Stork Delivering Baby Bird
Museum Quality Kuna Mola Showing Stork Delivering Baby Bird.Collected by Kit Kapp. Sometimes Kuna mythology can bear a strong resemblance to Western fairy tales. Kunas. Who are skittish when it comes to discussions relating to sex, have birth myths involving both deer and storks delivering babies. This mola shows a large stork, complete with billed cap, delivering a baby bird. Great embroidery on the stork's body. Interesting smaller birds on the periphery. The Kapp collection tag is labeled"Kannir Tupu APR 1970. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Museum Quality Galu Mola With Ansugana
Museum Quality 1960s Kuna Mola- Galu Spirit Fortress With Ansugana(Evil Mermaids) Collected by Kit Kapp. A terrific example of a"galu" or"kalu" mola centered around a male human figure wearing a triangular hat. Kit Kapp called this figure a"spiritual sheriff" and in this case the sheriff is surrounded by spiritual bad guys- ansugana(the plural of ansu) or devil mermaids. One of the most feared figures in Kuna mythology, because they lure Kuna fishermen into"pirwi" or whirlpools.Workmanship, color and condition are all great. A very nice, very collectible mola. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Bird Galu Spirit Fortress
1960s Kuna Mola- Spirit Fortress for Birds. Collected by Kit Kapp. Molas that depict animals within geometric objects- in this case a circle- are often"galu" or"kalu" molas. A galu is a spirit resting place or a spirit fortress located in another layer of existence. This example shows numerous surrounding birds in a maze-like configuration where birds and feathers intermix with leaves and branches. Very cool imagery. Excellent workmanship. I really like the two small areas where"random embroidery" has been used. This piece was in storage since 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. 19.5" x 15" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because ... moreof design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Child's Mola - Captain Marvel Comic Design
1960s Kuna Child's Mola- Modified Captain Marvel Comic Design. Collected by Kit Kapp. The design of this mola is derived from a Captain Marvel comic book. But this piece has been significantly modified from the original. Instead of Captain Marvel text, there is odd Spanish-like writing. And instead of birds being ridden by superheros, they are ridden by one-armed men. Captain Marvel meets"The Fugitive? Cool little mola with lots of intricate cutting and embroidery. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Pure Abstract Design
1960s Kuna Mola- Abstract Design. Collected by Kit Kapp. I've stared at this piece a lot. And sometimes I think I see a head.or legs.or a tail. But then they go away. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola - Nakkruz Cross Design
1950s-1960s Kuna Mola- Nakkruz(Cross) Collected by Kit Kapp. The cross. Or nakkruz, plays a strong role in Kuna healing ceremonies. Crosses are placed around the home of a sick person, at the doorway, and around the patient's hammock. This is to prevent evil spirits from traveling to the sick person who, because he/she is sick, is more vulnerable to their interference/malfeasance. This piece is beautifully done with wonderful color balance. A great piece of abstract art. 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola- Achugana- Mountain Dogs. Collected by Kit Kapp. This mola depicts four-legged animals that Kit Kapp always called"mountain dogs" or achugana. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Intricate Bird Maze - Sun Faded
1960s Kuna Mola- Intricate Bird Maze. Collected by Kit Kapp. The detailed imagery in this mola is remarkable- one of the better examples of a maze mola I've seen. Branches magically transform into bird feet or feathers. Really well done. Including great facial embroidery on the bird heads. Obvious strong sun fading on top half. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s-1960s Kuna Mola - 1942 Canada 50 Cent Coin
1940s-1960s Kuna Mola Depicting Canadian 50 Cent Piece.Collected by Kit Kapp. Canadian and British coins are popular sources of inspiration for Kuna mola makers. This example mimics a Canadian 1842 50 cent coin- see coin image for comparison(coin is NOT included in this auction) While this piece is big enough to be from the 1940s. It's more likely to be from the 1950s, based on the cloth used and the even size and spacing of the slit filler motifs(tas tas) A nice piece, showing some age and wear, and with one tiny hole, which is pretty hard to see. This piece was in storage since 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. 22" x 17.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid ... moreprice- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Cat-Bird
1960s Kuna Mola- Cat-Bird Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. Three very folky hybrid cat/bird figures dominate this 1960s mola. All three birds have fabulous bug-eyes. T-shaped noses, elaborately embroidered faces and, best of all, neckties. The center/main bird also shows very sharp looking teeth and two-dimensional legs that look like they were tacked on like paper-doll parts. A good example of Kuna textile folk art. This piece was in storage since 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. 20" x 16" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Execution, rareness and provenance. But I want to start at a low price and let the market decide how much they're ... moreworth. Museum Quality Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola - Rabbit in Moon
Museum Quality 1960s Kuna Mola With Rabbit in Moon Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. Where most American's see a"man" in the moon. The Kuna people see a rabbit embryo. This classic design is represented here in an"as good as it gets" mola. The design, cutting, sewing, colors and condition are all just about perfect. A very good, very collectible mola. A great example of Kuna textile folk art. This piece was in storage since 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. 19.5" x 16.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola - Skeletal Birds
Cool but Creepy 1960s Kuna Mola With Skeletal Bird Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. It is intriguing that Kuna women like to make clothing that displays some pretty gross stuff- ticks. Snakes.and dead birds. This dead bird mola also includes a number of smaller figures, including a man, small birds and scorpions(perhaps that cause of death for the birds? 1950s - 1960s Kuna Mola, Kit Kapp Collection - Eagles
Bizarre 1950s- 1960s Mola- Two Eagles.Collected by Kit Kapp. A big bold eagle mola. This is a classic old piece, maybe as early as the 1940s, but more likely'50s or'60s. Nice big triangular"tas tas" filler motifs. There are several small holes along the top edge plus several very small areas where the base layer has thinned-through. This piece was in storage since 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. 23" x 17.5" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. 1950s - 1960s Kuna Mola, Kit Kapp Collection - Bizarre Lion King, Flying Head
Bizarre 1950s- 1960s Mola.Collected by Kit Kapp. I've run across several molas with this strange design. A jaguar or lion wearing a crown. Snarling at a bird flying by with a wand or scepter or branch in its claws- and a disembodied bird head flying through the air! I have never run across a good explanation of the imagery- if you've got it, let me know! The base cloth on a large area in the top of the piece must have worn through and the Kuna maker patched it with a big piece of newer red cloth- if you look closely you can see where the"outline cloth" is a darker red- that's the replaced area. But it shows pretty well. There are several other small gaps in the base cloth that have not been patched. A wild wild mola. This piece was in storage since 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of ... moreKit Kapp's storage unit. 21" x 17" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola - Abstract Mountains or Arrows
1960s Kuna Mola With Mountain or Arrow Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. The design on this mola is often called"mountains" and sometimes"trees. but I believe it is a"nasi" or arrow design- specifically the"ina suar" medicine wood) carving in the shape of an arrow, thought by the Kuna's to be helpful in curing epilepsy. This example is beautifully executed with good graphic balance, good colors and wonderful fine workmanship. 1960s Kuna Mola With Cats in Jungle Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. These are some pretty angry-looking cats The stern/scary looks on their faces is intimidating. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s - 1960s Kuna Mola - Abstract Plant Design
1950s- 1960s Kuna Mola With Abstract Plant Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. This is an unusual variation on a traditional mola design based on gourds used for rattles. The artist used a free-form approach rather than drawing the design ahead of time. Cool color combinations. Nice morsana strip at top. This piece was much loved and much worn and has some patches. Small holes in base layer and spotting. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Fabulous Mutu Tuba Vine Motif
Stunning 1960s Kuna Mola With Mutu Tuba Vine Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. We'll start with the typed label on the back of this one- normally a sign that it was included in one of the many museum exhibits that Kit and Valerie arrange in Europe in the 1970s. 58. Mutu Tuba Mola. Mutu. A vine is the string of arrows which produces in oppostion a band of the letter Ws" I can tell you from watching women make this design, it is one of the most difficult molas to create- long, long strips of complex design that have to match each other perfectly when the piece is assembled. As an abstract piece of art, it's simply a great piece. Excellent condition and colors. A wonderful mola. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Uchu Design - Women With Branches
1960s Kuna Mola With"Uchu Design" With Two Women Holding Leaves/Branches.Collected by Kit Kapp. I'm pretty sure if I went through all my books I could find the story behind this design.But. In any case it shows two Kuna women facing each other, each holding short branches from plants. Each woman stands on something that could be plant material, ocean waves or, well, you fill in the blank. Kit Kapp's collection label, which is still attached, calls it an"Uchu Mola, and says it was collected on Soledad Minia in April of 1970. An uchu(or nuchu) is a wood carving that storage spirits that are helpful in Kuna healding ceremonies. So perhaps the branches being held are healing herbs and the women are Inatuledi(Kuna healers) It is in excellent condition with vibrant colors. Kit Kapp Collection 1960s Kuna Mola - Purba Animal Spirits Design
1960s Kuna Mola With"Purba" Spirit) Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. There's a lot happening in the design of this mola. But the main focus is the large"achu" mountain dog) with what appears to be a bird standing on its back. In reality the"bird" is the spirit of the achu and is rising out of the animal. This likely takes place at a"galu" or spirit fortress in the fourth level of existence. There are three other small achugana in the design, along with a myriad of abstract geometric filler motifs. Note the single use of"erratic embroidery" on the wing of the spirit bird. These"squiggles, which don't contribute to the design, are often found on very early pieces(though this piece is not"early" and is more likely mid to late 1960s. Great graphics. Very good condition. Kit Kapp Collection 1950s or 1960s Kuna Mola - Brain Coral Design
1950s- 1960s Kuna Mola With"Brain Coral" Design.Collected by Kit Kapp. Another large traditional mola in a traditional style- this one uses what is normally called the"brain coral" design. But I'm not sure that's the true source of the design. Whatever the source, this motif has been in use for a long time- and this is a very archaic rendering of it. This one has some power. This piece was in storage since 1971 until March of this year when several hundred molas came out of Kit Kapp's storage unit. 21.5" x 16" A comment on pricing: I believe some of the pieces I will be listing in the next couple of weeks are far more valuable than the opening bid price- because of design.
