Item Photos, Antique 3 generation bowl from the Shipibo Conibo tribe who live in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest in teh Ucayali region. Broken into many large pieces but has been reattached. Some tiny pieces also missing. see the pictures. Very interesting, awesome and unique item for your collection. Sold as is. Diameter: 11 inches(29cms) Height: 4 inches(11cms) Women make the pottery in the coil method not on a wheel. Each piece is individually made lightly and thin. Then it is fired in an outdoor fire. A resin is obtained from the sap of a tree to make the ceramic glaze. The paint is from the bark of trees. Boiled to make the reddish brown and black colours. Geometric patterns decorate ceramics. Such patterns are said to be spiritual and energy. The main one is Ronin which is the cosmic serpert. A magnificent and unique large old Shipibo-Conibo effigy pot from near Pucalpa. Peru. Standing impressively at over 11" tall and at over 14" diameter, this vessel is adorned with a serene human face in the traditional form. The eyes are narrow. Painted brown with incised grooves, the nose is pronounced, the mouth is narrow and straight, and the ears are molded in the style of ornamental handles. This pot was hand molded and fired, and the walls are thick, solid and well-balanced. The natural beige surface is covered almost entirely with geometric patterns in brown, orange, and cream colors. The bottom of the pot shows a charred mark where it has been previously used, perhaps for preparing the Ayahuasca medicine brew for which this culture is frequently known. A thin crack on the front, approximately 7cm, appears to have been indigenously ... morerepaired. The Shipibo(apemen) and the Conibo(fishmen) they eventually became one distinct tribe through intermarriage and communal ritual and are currently known as the Shipibo-Conibo people. The Shipibo-Conibo live in the 21st century while keeping one foot in the past spanning millennia in the Amazonian rainforest. Many of their traditions are still practiced, such as ayahuasca shamanism. Shamanistic songs have inspired artistic tradition and decorative designs found in their clothing, pottery, tools and textiles. Some of the urbanized people live around Pucallpa in the Yarina Cocha, an extensive indigenous zone. Most others live in scattered villages over a large area

It has a human face to one side(a common motif in Shipibo ceramics) and is decorated with a finely painted geometric pattern. The Shipibo tribe is still producing pottery today and their ceramics are regarded as the epitome of native South American Indian ware. Measuring 4” 10.5cm) across and 2.75” tall. It is in good condition with no chips, cracks or other damage, just some wear and tear to the painted decoration; there is a slightly glossy shine to the piece, and I believe it has been sprayed with a preservative lacquer to protect the design. Here is an amazing piece of pottery from Peru. Mid 20th century Shipibo, Solid, with NO repairs, original authentic massive example at 24" TWO FEET WIDE! and over 20" tall. No damage and wonderful designs, this is a must have for your collection. This will be safely packaged and multiple boxed or perhaps even crated for safest delivery with full insurance. It has survived this long we don't want it to get damaged in transit! Similar examples(last picture) are selling for $1500-$1800 elsewhere and they are half the size of this one.
