It apprears ... moreto be an animal with a long snout. Some of which is missing, and the remains of two horns on the back of the head. Since it is wearing a rather ornate headdress it might be an zoomorphic representation of a Shaman but there is not enough of the figure to make any kind of distinction. The headress has the remains of red paint and there are pieces missing. The cheeks are puffed out, some of the figures have puffed heeks attributed to chewing of coca leaves but that is doubtful for an animal and possible or a Shaman. The clay color is mottled grayish tan. Some fine crystaline deposits evident in the clay. One cheek is depressed as it it were done before firing or collapsed after firing as it is not broken. There is a small firing hole at the top of the head and the head is hollow. It is 2 3/4 inches high and 2 3/4 inches across the front. The base where it is broken is a circle 1 3/4 inches in diameter with a hole that is 3/4 inches in diameter. It will sit flat as it is in most of the photographs or will mount nicely. It was in a private collection from Eccuador with La Tolita and Jamacoaque fragments but since I am not an expert I cannot positively identify the culture or the exact age. These two cultures span from 300 B.C. to 1000 A.D. This is not a reproduction.

Jamacoaque ... morefrom a private collection dating 350 B C- 1200 A D. This is not a reprodution. The front has a human head on what sems to be the front of a jaguar with paw feet. It tapers to a rounded point and has a handle. The face has excellent detail with deep set eyes with brow ridges, earrings, very prominent nose ring and an open mouth with pointed teeth. The teeth give it a rather frightening appearance no doubt intentional. The nose is not damaged but obscured by the thick nose ring that hangs down onto the top lip. The head with a headdress and side lappets. There is a hole at the back end and one in back of the head. The body is clear but I believe there is still debris in the head as IT WILL NOT TWEET. I did not want to try to dislodge debris and damage the holes. It measures 4 1/2 inches long and approx 4 1/4 inches high and rests on two paw feet. Clay color is a buff color not quite as dark as in the photos. I am saying Jamacoaque but it was in with Jamacoaque and also La Tolita fragments and I am not an expert. It is in very good condition with some chips to the side lappets that are not evident from the front but I have the damage pictured. I see evidence of an old repair or restoration on the front legs as there is a thin line that extends over to the back(see photos) However. I do not see evidence of a clean break all around and I do not see any type of glue in the lines. The clay color is very consisent and the restoration or repair was done a long time ago in Ecuador and not by the private collector who brought them back years ago. There seems to be no evidence of trying to hide the breaks unless they were cracks and the piece was not broken or separated. Other pieces in the collection had repairs and evidence of glue and some of these are in my other listings. I have close up photos of the lines or breaks that i have darkened a bit in the photos to show

The color is consistent throughout all beads, a beautiful marbled green with some blueish undertones. My client, a native of Guatemala, is a long time(50+ years) collector of South American artifacts, and has several museum quality pieces. Colima Dog This is a wonderful Colima figural dog vessel. As found in a local estate and believed to be an ancient piece from Western Mexico, approximately two thousand years old. The dog is fat- or pregnant- with a hollow body in aggressive stance with tail that forms a spout. The dog's eyes and mouth are incised into the clay. Dog effigies such as this were buried in tombs in the belief that dogs were an important guide into the afterlife of the deceased. Both of the dog's ears are chipped; one with minor loss. The other more significantly. Two legs have been re-glued; the repairs are rough and amateur, and the break lines appear to have had some loss and are not well-aligned. The burnished reddish brown exterior is mottled and veined. And the interior is encrusted with mineral sediment. The dog came to me without information on ... moreits history or provenance. PRE COLUMBIAN FRAGMENT HEAD AZTEC MEXICO i purchased this head fragment in Mexico city from a street vender on one of my trips in the 1960's. Locals pick up fragments from fields. Certainly not museum quality but interesting. This figure has spool earrings typical of the Teotihuacan figures and what remains of a headdress. Without the rest it is difficult to tell if it is male or female as I believe both wore earrings. It has a slight pale bluish tinge on spots that I have tried to show in the photos. The fragment is quite pale and Ihave many photographs as the lighting changes features. The broken areas on the headdress show a reddish brown pottery beneath. There is damage to the nose and lips but the face is still nicely detailed. It measures 3 3/4 inches across the face. I have tried to position it every way possible as it is quite ... morethree dimensional. The close up photos are to show as much detail as possible but the features look better when viewed from a normal distance. First is a 4” wide by 5” tall hollow back god. There are worn breaks at the top and bottom. The second sculpture is a 3 ½” tall whistle. Half of the headrest is missing, but the rest of the figural whistle is original. The third item in the auction is a darker pottery head with a finely detailed hair style. Measuring 3 ½” in diameter by 3 ¼” tall the small pottery pot is figural with eyes, ears, nose and arms. There is surface roughness and a painted design on the back. The 5 th items is a 3 ¼” all by 2” wide pottery head with a broken bottom. Lastly is the most interesting of the six Pre Columbian Pottery items in the auction.
