Vintage NUCHU KUNA Doll Double/Twin Head/Face MOLA HandMade Kuna Yala Is. Panama
FREE SHIPPING to US. Very interesting primitive hand-carved doll from the Kuna Yala Islands off the coast of Panama. This type of doll is known as a"nuchu" Very important in the Kuna culture, and used to ward off and protect against evil spirits. I found a book online whose text is accessible. Hand carved from a lightweight wood. Probably from a balsa tree. Doll is dressed in a"mola"traditional applique handwork blouse. Condition– noticeable soil on the yellow fabric especially around the collar; one small pull in one of the sleeves; a few other loose threads here and there; color in the panels is quite fresh so this item has probably been washed very little. He is a quality embroidery by the kuna indians of mola san blas island off of panama, they were typically brought back as souvenirs after people went through the Panama canal. The frame measures 13 X 10 inches, the embroidery 7 1/2 by 6 inches. Selling this Collection of RARE Antique and Vintage MOLAS from Kuna tribe. Panama. Some acquired from Kit Kapp collection, some from Bob Huber collection, some purchased in Panama in 1980s. Most Molas I am selling are very old. From the late 1800s to 1970. They have never been exhibited or previously sold, all from my private collection, which I gathered in about 35 years. This one is from c 1930. Nice geometric abstract design in red. Approx. dimensions 19" x 13 1/2" Purchased in Panama in 1980s. Mola. A Kuna word, has several meanings: fabric or cloth, shirt or upper garment for men or women, brightly decorated women´s blouses, or colorful layers of fabric, cut and hand-sewn into designs for fronts and backs of Kuna women´s blouses. Kuna women from the San Blas Archipelago produce most of the work, though some molas ... moreare also made by Kuna women from inland Panama and western Colombia. Vintage Kuna Mola Blouse - Happy Dog
Vingage Mola Blouse with Happy Dog Design. This blouse is a bit of a mystery. The mola panels would appear to be from the 1960s or 1970s. But the huge puffy sleeves are more in tune with the 1980s. My guess is that a Kuna woman"updated" the molas by adding a more modern yoke/sleeve combination. I like the goofy dog's face. Nice"no-slits" design with lots of abstract filler designs. It was loved, and worn, a lot- faded but still shows pretty well. Vintage Kuna Mola Blouse - Devil Politician
Nia(Devil) Politician Mola Blouse. Probably from the late 1960s or early 1970s. The blouse depicts a pretty scary Nia with giant teeth, curled horns, webbed feets, tail feathers, a fancy embroidered tie and a Panamanian flag- which makes him the scariest form of devil, a politiican. Note the extensive and well-done embroidery, including the embroidered vest. Great color and condition. Excellent condition. This blouse has been in my collection for some time.
