Mexican Tin Retablo Lamina Antique Santo Spanish Colonial Painting
El Divino Rostro. La Santa Faz, the Veil of Veronica" oil/tin. 14 x 10" anonymous, circa1875, v ery good stable overall condition. Unrestored. This painting of the'Divine Visage" or the"Veil of Veronica" called"Santa Faz" or"Holy Face" in South America) represents an imprint of the blood and sweat from Christ’s face on the scarf of a woman who darts from the crowdof spectators as he drags his cross to Calvary. The name'Veronica' is a scrambling of the letters of the Latin word'vera icon' or'true image' of Christ. Tin retablo paintings show endless variations in style. Aesthetics, and emotional interpretations of this theme. This striking portrayal of Jesus conveys a grace and sense of forgiveness even though he's suffering unspeakable pain& hardship. The idea ... moreof responding with dignity to life's challenges is one of the central lesson of Christ’s teachings. The“Veronica’s Veil” is high on my list of favorite themes and were I to collect just one subject this would be it. Please ask all questions before bidding.this is a final sale. No returns, thank you. Happy bidding!

Antique 19th century colonial Mexican wood and polychrome santo Cruz de Animas
A superb colonial santo. Mexican school, early 19th century. This is a representation of a Cruz de Animas: a penitent's cross. It depicts the crucified Christ surrounded by painted symbols relating to his life, death and resurrection as described in the Bible, including the sun and moon, Jacob's Ladder, the cock that crowed thrice and the the Holy Grail. Above the Christ, a crowning medallion depicts God the Father. The base of the cross has two levels. The first depicts Adam and Eve, Saint Michael with the Flaming Sword that he carried while escorting them out of Eden, and Death armed with a quiver of arrows standing over a sick man, about to take his life. Original Antique 19th Century Colonial Mexican polychrome wood Santo, Trinity
A superb and rare colonial santo. Mexican school, early 19th century. This is a representation of the Holy Trinity(Santa Trinidad' in Spanish) The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit- identified respectively by the All Seeing Eye, the Lamb, and the Bleeding Heart- sit enthroned above the clouds, their feet resting on the obliging heads of angels. Although the Holy Trinity is a common subject in colonial Latin America's religious paintings(known as'retablos' it is quite uncommon to find a sculptural version of this theme. In this beautiful piece the attitude of each figure is distinct and suited to the member of the Trinity it represents. Each delicately painted face is unique and bears a different expression: the Son appears younger and gentler in his manner. The Father slightly older, more rigid and stern, and the Holy Spirit ... moreappropriately pensive, distant and ethereal. The santo measures 17 inches high. 11.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep. Its condition is very good for its age. There are very few missing pieces- the right-hand thumb on the Father, and the Son's feet with their corresponding angels- and the paint remains largely intact in the front of the figures. There is naturally some age-related weathering, very minor in front, and fading of the paint in the back of the santo, but the carving remains as originally intended. Note, in the back, the visible belt on the Holy Spirit and the draping of the cloaks. Some spots on the angel-laden base have lost paint, but the entire piece has been restored and waxed by an expert to preserve it from further weathering. This santo is authentic. It was bought by an experienced collector and restorer of wooden santos in Mexico in the early 1970s. I inherited it. If you are a serious buyer and wish to see more photos of details contact me with a specific request and I can accommodate you. I highly recommend purchasing insurance for the shipping of this piece.
