PRECOLUMBIAN TRIBAL CALIMA GOLD NOSE RING ORNAMENT COLOMBIA EX KANOW COLLECTION
Calima Region Gold Nose Ornament- Colombia Circa 100-1000 AD. Original Gold Length 4.12cm( 1.625in) Weight 5.8g(0.205oz) Ex-Kanow Collection. Miami, FL, 1950's Ex-Hart Family Collection. Columbia, SC Ex-Traugott Collection. Osprey, FL(provenance and COA certificate) Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. During the first millennium BC. In the valley of the rivers Calima and Dagua which flow into the Pacific Ocean, groups of settled farmers and excellent potters began a long process of development known as llama. Later the populations began to expand, adapting the landscape of hills and valleys to make house platforms, raised fields and drainage canals. This Yotoco period(2nd century BC– 9th century AD) in Calima produced splendid gold pieces: beautiful ornaments to ... moreenhance the prestige of their wearers, accompanying them eventually to their tombs. This ancient and rare gold ornament was formerly the Hart Family Collection of Columbia. South Carolina and was crafted from hammered gold(not tumbaga) The Hart Family acquired the artifact from the Kanow Collection of Miami, Florida who collected sometime during the 1950's. A copy of the provenance and COA certificate received from Traugott, a well known Pre-Columbian art dealer and gallery owner, will accompany the piece. Despite two cuts to the right edge, the present example is in fine condition and a more rigid, thicker example than the hammered repoussé forms. These cuts were reputedly a crude way for merchants and looters to confirm found artifacts as solid gold vs. gilded. Appropriate for age, origin and medium.
