I am describing this as best I can as I have not seen one before. I think it is a coca bag or a purse with coins sewn onto it so they are not lost during ... moretravelling. The purse itself does not seem very old but the dates on the coins are in the range of 1785 to 1883.

Holes or repairs Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Woven textiles have been a feature of Bolivian life and culture for thousands of years. The oldest examples possibly pre-dating pottery finds. Although utilitarian in origin, they are one of the key distinguishing features of the various indigenous cultures that still exist today. A lliclla(or awayo) is a utilitarian shoulder cloth. They have been used for carrying a baby or personal goods. Some awayus and llicllas are made especially as ceremonial ground or altar cloths. They were also used as wall hangings displayed with other objects representing"leader" status. Weaving of awayo is done in two separate parts which are then sewn together; this central seam shows decorative details and colors that highlight the beauty of the tapestry. Textiles are immensely valuable as investments. And although items may have been designed originally to fulfill a strictly practical purpose. They have increasing significance as works of art and as pieces of cultural history. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Photos are part of description. Chuspa BOLIVIAN AYMARA CHUSPA - WITH LIME POUCHES - 19TH. CENTURY
Here for auction is a beautifull little Bolivian Amarya Chuspa measureing 9" wide and 7 1/2" tall. These are made for the workers in the high altatude to carry cocoa leaves which they chew(along with a piece of lime which privideds citric acid to break down the cocaine from the cocoa leaf) to give them extra stamana in the diffacult working conditions at eleven to twelve thousand foot altatude. This chuspa is special in that on the fron of the bag there are three small pouches created in the weave o f the bag itself used to carry wedges of lime. They are diffacult to see but are distingueshed by being surrounded by beeds. The little pouch opens to the inside so that the little lime prize will not be lost. There are actually seven different colors used in the bag. White, pink, red. Purple, natural vicuna. Green and dark blue. This ... moreis all woven of very fine cameid fibres. The bag is in good used condition. The front is very slightly more faded than the back because it would have faced the sun all day. This a real little art treasure from the highlands of Bolivia. NOTE THE HORSE FIGURE ABOVE THE CENTRAL POUCH. THE THIRD PHOTO SHOWS THE ACTUAL COLOR PALET THE BEST. FREE SHIPING IN THE USA ONLY Please Wait For An Invoice as Shipping Insurance Must Be Added

Rare Mid to Late 19th Century Bolivian Aymara Manta (Ahuayo)
I am offering up for auction a rare. Beautifully woven Aymara textile from Bolivia. It is dyed with vegetal dyes and has been'conservatively' estimated by South American textile experts to have been woven sometime in the mid to late 19th century. It is a women's'manta' or lliclia(pronounced' yeekya' in Quechua or' ahuayo' in Aymara. The pictures do not do this piece justice. Despite 3 very small. Repairable holes, it is in amazing condition for its age. Warp faced plain weave in black and cochineal red dyed hand-spun alpaca or vicuna wool with complimentary bands of warp weave along the outer edge and centre in ochre. Golden brown, indigo, dark blue, white and cochineal. Measures 38" 96 cm. x 40" 1.01m) Bought many years ago at the estate sale of an anthropologist whose research focus from the ... more1930's through to the late 70's was South American indigenous tribal peoples. The Aymara existed in the Andes in what is now Bolivia and Peru for thousands of years. They were conquered by the Incas before the arrival of the Spanish and the Inca nobility originally spoke Aymara before later switching to Quechua. Both languages still survive today. How can we be sure of the age of this piece? Several reasons predominate: 1) The arrival of aniline dyes in South America had a profound effect on the Aymara. Women were quick to use dyes which were easier to produce than the more difficult to produce natural colours. Examples of their weaving collected in the 1880's were already beginning to show evidence of synthetic dyes. None here. 2) More recent examples of Aymara weaving show an increased use of figurative bands(i.e. designs with horses. Birds, flowers etc. The earlier pieces tended to stick to the representational verticality of the world in which they lived( a vast panorama of horizontal levels" according to Aymara historians. For those collectors interested in knowing more about antique Aymara weavings I am including in this auction a rare. No longer available

Vintage Bolivian Textile Blanket/Manta AGUAYO or LLIJLLA

Folk& Native American Art This AGUAYO or LLIJLLA is a typical Andean textile of pre-Columbian influence. It is very old and made with nature dyes. Every one of these textiles has a story to tell: weaving of the yarn. Colors, thread and figures in it are characters and life experiences of the communities and/or the artisans themselves. Measure approximately 38" x 50 used good with some damage please see photos. This real Aguayo is a hand made used by women from the Plateau of Peru and Bolivia. Each woman has her own aguayo. It can be fabricated with wool of llama. Alpaca or sheep; it is dyed with natural vibrant colors. These big-squared weavings are used to carry babies and small children ... moreon one’s back, to seat, put food, as well as all sorts of products. Formerly, it was men who used these aguayo weaves. There are 7 zones where the aguayos are fabricated: the North zone of La Paz. including La Paz city) zones of Oruro, Cochabamba, Potosi, and finally Chuquisaca. Each zone has its own characteristics, passing through the surrealism of the Jalq'a weaves(known as the weaves of Potolo, in Sucre) the elegance of the Macha weaves in Potosi and the extravagance of the Tarabuco weaves. When weaving, these pieces of aguayo, men and women write stories about their communities, symbols of their culture or things they have dreamt for this work. Of course, these stories and symbols depend of the different regions. In fact, each region has its own colors, drawings and techniques. They make their weave through abstract drawings of naive and figurative representations or include surrealist monsters. 0 0 1 75 429 Edelman 3 1 503 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE Please send me any messages with questions you may have before bidding.
