A MUCH SOUGHT AFTER FOLKLORIC SOUTH AMERICAN COLONIAL COLLECTIBLE This is a highly collectible garment or cloak pin known as a tupu or tupo. It has a prominent spoon shaped finial with a double headed eagle over a flower and leaves. The large dark blood red glass bead is held in place with prongs. Tupus were worn with the point facing upwards to hold dresses or mantles together. At one time these tupos were used to identify the wearer’s area of residence and often wealth. They were an important part of cultural significance for indigenous Andeans. Original two century old pieces are hard to find. A similar tupu is illustrated in Argent d’Argentine(1992) which is ascribed to Bolivia and to the eighteenth century. Other references showing a similar tupu is illustrated in Phipps. E. et al. Lloyd, a llama herder living on a lovely llano near the Llullaillaco volcano, gave these tupus to his luscious wife, Lluana, so her lliclla wouldn’t fall down around her lanky ankles. However. I can’t do that because none of it is true. I simply could not resist using that many“L’s” in one sentence. One tupu tests positive as silver. And the other appears to be hand engraved ... morebrass with a rough cut piece of either glass or a translucent mineral specimen on both sides– held in place by prongs. The silver tupu is 5 ¼” long(15.7g) And the brass is 6 ¼” The brass tupu is by far the heaviest, tipping the scales at approximately 30 grams. Both are old and in fine condition. A tupu was used by women of several Andean cultures– going back perhaps as long as 1300 years. It was(and is) practical. Fashionable and a sign of prestige. It is also a make-do weapon. In brief. It is simply a pin that holds the shawl(lliclla) snug and in place against the sometimes-chilling winds of life in the Andes. To be completely honest with you. When I found these two in an estate I bought in southern Indiana, I had no clue what they were. HUGE Antique Peruvian TUPU TUPO Peacock Shawl Cloak Brooch Pin Chatelaine
This amazing piece is called a Tupu or Tupo. The native Indian women and girls of the Andes fasten their shawls with beautiful clasps called TUPOS. The Tupo usually identifies the wearers area of residence and is an important part of cultural significance for Andean women. This very fine Tupo is made of bronze and is inset with a blue and amber glass cabochons with charms and a large blue glass stone dangling below it. The imagery is fabulous with a peacock above the flowered crest and is a wonderful example of indigenous art. Tupos are rarely seen anymore having been replaced by large safety pins. This Tupo dates from the 19th century and is in wonderful condition. The bottom flower seems to have been cleaned at some point and is a different color from the rest of the brooch but the rest is in original condition. INCAN Seven Piece COPPER Lot: One TUPU, Three Spear Points, Three Needles, More
Please note this is only a three-day auction. Offered here for your kind consideration is one lot of seven ancient Incan copper(or copper alloy) pieces from Peru. The second image(or the third one down) and possibly the first. The longest needle, are tupus. the Incan version of a modern shawl pin. A tupu is a long pin often with a decorative head. Used by Andean women to fasten a lliclla. A lliclla is a shawl, which can also be referred to as lliqlla or lliklla. The shawl is pinned in the front with a tupu. This specific tupu is made of copper or a copper alloy. Other tupus were also made with silver or gold. It has been suggested that the tupus were likely made during the mid to Late Horizon period(600-1532 A.D. A woman of high social position. Such as priestess, may have worn this tupu. Based on similar archeological findings. It might ... morebe that these tupus, and the points and needles, are all from the Moche, Chimu, or Chancay civilizations, although the exact civilization cannot be identified due to the conquest and fighting amongst them. It's entirely possible these were trade items. Particularly the two-eyed needle which appears to have been cast. The smallest spear point looks like a rat tail and is 9.0-cm long. The other two are about 9.8-cm and 12.5-cm long(3 1/2-inches, 3 7/8-inches, and 4 15/16-inches, respectively) The longer 16.2-cm(6 3/8-inch) needle might be another tupu. The two needles are 13.9-cm and 12.8-cm long. 5 1/2, and 5-inches, respectively) Note the one-cm(about 3/8-inch) brass cube for scale is not included. I only charge for the actual shipping charges. Cleaning out the jewelry box. Many items to come. This is a large Brooch Pin from Peru. In the 1980's I bought it at a Jewelry Store in Chicago. That specialized in Vintage and Antique items. This is a large brooch 5 1/2 inches long if you count the attached dangles. It is about 2 1/2 inches wide. The design is of a Peacock who's talons hold a jewel; there are 4 small birds facing the jewel. I tried to do close-ups. It is a amber colored stone. Possible paste. I.e. not real gemstone? I have no way to test stone. I bought it for its beauty. There is a patina that could be removed by polishing? I won't do that as some prefer the natural aged look.
