A fabulous large hand hammered copper bowl measuring 12 inches(31 cm) in diameter and 3 inches(7.5 cm) high. Por Aprecio" In gratitude) and a flower hammered in the center of the bowl For collection at church services We bought it from the estate of a man who had lived in Mexico until the 1930's. He willed this and a few other items to his nephew in Pennsylvania when he died. We bought it at the estate auction of the nephews possessions about 5 years ago. I date it from somewhere right around 1850 if not a bit earlier. Examples of copper church bowls can be seen in museum collections- but the form is rarely found The decoration on this one is wonderful and while worn it is mostly intact As for condition. I took this old bucket to The Antiques Road Show in KC hoping it was REALLY old and valuable. And also wanted some information about the piece. After some confering they said it was hand carved out some kind of South American mahogeny, probably made between 1900-1920. He valued it between $95-120 dollars,so it wasn't as old or valuable as I was thinking/hoping,but still a very cool old piece. It was carved from one large piece of wood and the handles were braided from some kind of plant. There are two large cracks in the wood on the top and a small crack near the bottom(see pic's) but what a great decorative piece. It measures 9 1/2"T x 9 3/4"W from handle to handle. I have spoken to several people who know about ethnic weaving and can't seem to get a conclusive answer. There are a couple of loose threads in the main body of the blanket and it does not look like yarn or thread- it looks like hair. It is quite finely woven You can see from the photos that the condition is not perfect but it is still a beautiful item. Description This antique circa 16-17th century(or earlier) Mexico Pre-Columbian clay pottery torso figurine. Is hand formed in pale red earthenware(terracotta) clay pottery. It is modled wearing a skirt and upper body with pronounced chest plate form, which has been damaged, the arms and head have been broken off and the legs are missing leaving the hollows in the bottom where they were fitted originally. It has hand incised mesh pattern and pressed circle dot border detail to the skirt and it has a collection pencil mark to the base'MEXICO' CONDITION It has missing head. Both arms and both legs, damage to the chest, it also has a chip and some nibbles to one side of the skirt at the bottom. Antique Mexican Nativity Ox. Hand-carved Wood. This hand-carved nativity ox has a lot of character despite missing some legs and horns, tail, and other features. Wood worm holes dot the ox. He is mounted on a simple, black-painted base. The reddish brown paint has worn away, showing the original wood that the ox is carved from. This piece measures 5 inches high from the bottom of the base. With out the base, the body of the ox measures 2 3/4 inches high by 2 1/4 inches wide and 6 1/2 inches long. Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(St. Francis) Hand Carved Antique Santo or Bulto San Francisco(Saint Francis) Circa 1800s- early 1900s. Possibly older. Santos are Spanish colonial folk art saints. Bultos are Santos"in the round" I.e. carved from three dimensional cottonwood roots, pine wood, etc. Although today they are commonly defined as being from New Mexico, where they are still made, the art form originated in Spain and hence spread to all of their past colonies(where these older pieces are no longer as common) Provenance: This San Francisco? is most probably from Guatemala; the elderly gentleman collector I purchased him from says that is where he purchased this piece a couple decades ago and he called him St. Francis. However. Another eBay member has written me and insisted that St. Francis would not be holding a book, ... moreonly scholars/theologians would. So perhaps the identification is wrong, I will leave that mystery to the buyer. San Francisco? is executed in the traditional manner: hand carved wood with pegged together arms/appendages, pegged onto a stand; covered in gesso, hand painted, and varnished(probably with pine sap) He appears to have been pegged at the waist also(quite common) The waist joint is barely visible and still very tight. Condition: He shows the very typical wear and tear of age: rubbing off and/or chipping of the paint and gesso. Some crazing/crackling, minor cracking at some peg joints, etc. There does appear to be some white colored glue between the pegged hands and arms. Whether it is original or not I do not know, but it appears to be a more recent repair. He appears far older or much more used/touched or weathered than my San Pedro listing from the same collection, as much of his paint and gesso are worn down to the dark wood underneath. BEAUTIFUL RARE ANTIQUE PONCHO Hand-woven ANDES INDIAN PERU Llama Wool Bolivia
This is a wonderful antique. Hard to find, Native Andes Indian Poncho. It was acquired by my parents while living and working in Peru during the war, in 1945. My mother collected fine textiles from the region, and this is one piece from her collection- collected from either Peru or Bolivia. There are two other fine, hand woven bags listed as well. It measures 45” x 45” With a slight pucker in the fabric(shown while laid flat) and is made of soft, hand spun, dyed natural sheep and llama wool. It is a smaller size poncho, from the region where it came, and is decorated with narrow bands of color ranging from vibrant pink, to some use of orange, light turquoise, surrounding on both sides, a plain center field of shades of brown and some hint of blue(see photos) My mother adjusted the center opening, so not to have to pull over her head– thus ... morethe half-opening shown to make it easier to wear. She also added a bottom facing to strengthen the piece and made it more wearable(shown) The top-stitching is visible in the photo's, but when worn, is hard to detect. Nonetheless, the facing can be removed, along with the stitching, if desired, and would not interfer with the integrity of the piece. T his piece has no damage. Moth bites, or odors of any kind, and has been in storage for the past 30+ years. It is a lovely garment, soft and comfortable to wear, and striking in appearance. Any questions. Antique Hand Woven Andes Native Poncho Textile Llama Wool Peru Bolivia Folk Art
For auction. A wonderful South American Andean poncho. It is very old, made of hand-dyed, hand-spun wool and woven into a beautiful pattern of indigo, brick-red, and whites. There are very long, tied tassels on both ends. The textile does have issues: mainly there are wear spots that have been repaired, some discoloration as shown, last photo, and the foldline down the center that forms the hood is thin in the weaving from wear, photo 10. As is common in this garment style, the hood is sewn by placing two edges together; some of those stitches are undone, photos 8& 9. Even so, this is a marvelous textile to be displayed, or used in some other creative, repurposed way. It is quite heavy, hence the higher shipping. This is a no-reserve auction. Thanks for looking.
