The ends or arms of the bench have a little bit of wiggle to them. But the bench is sturdy. One side of the bench appears to have been sat upon more than the other and so is a bit more"squished" than the other side. In my opinion. The bench is at least turn of the 20th century, if not older. I have not removed the dust cover from the underside to see the construction. Note that I have rotated the bench 180 degrees for photos. This petite window bench has wonderful form. The arms scroll outward and into the seat frame, the entire frame covered in a striped upholstery, which stuffs over the frame of the seat. The sofa rests over two tapered and molded front legs, each of solid carved mahogany- the back legs are slightly backswept, tapering in a plain leg. This is a gorgeous designer piece. Dimensionally perfect for a window bench, a small settee in front of the master bed, as a seating implement in a smaller room or study. Seat is 17 3/4" high by 23 3/4" wide by 14" deep. Back height is 23 3/4" Leg spread is 24 3/4" wide by 18 3/8" deep. Tag has it being made by the Statesville Chair Co. It looks to be solid mahogany to me except for the center lattice that goes between the seat and the fancy grooved and turned rail. It has been reupholstered at some point in a heavy 50's type vinyl covering. You can still see the old upholstery along some of the edges if you look underneath. Age is around the 1940's give or take 10 years. Sound and solid with some old nicks and scratches that look to have been touched up whenever they redid the upholstery. A little fine white paint mist on it from someone getting some roller spatter on it but not much of it and it does clean off. Upholstery has no holes or tears but does have 2 light brown ... moremarks on it on the front right corner looking at it. It still feels nice and flexible. Mahogany Stool/Bench, Dual Layer Storage & Upholstered Top - 19" X 13.5" X 19"
Unusual bench or stool in mahogany that features a hinged lid and two levels of storage inside. This is from my mother's estate. She was an antique dealer specializing in English antiques so I'm guessing this too is English. The frame of the stool shows wear. Though mostly on its finish. There aren't any cracks or major dents or repairs. The top features a lovely floral yellow green and salmon colored tapestry with brass nailhead trim. Inside the lid. As I mentioned, is storage, with the first layer being a removable tray with six slots, and the second layer being the well of the bench top. The removable tray has an outside measurement of 14 1/2" long by 10 3/4" across by 2" deep. Four of the slots measure(two on each side) have inside measurements of 2" by 2" by 10 1/8" the middle two measure 2 7/16" ... moreby 2" by 10 1/8" The bottom well measures 16 3/16" long by10 7/8" across by 4 1/2" deep. The stool measures 19" long(with lid; 18" on base only) by 13 5/8" across(12 5/8" base only) by 19" tall. It has brass fittings. No key. I did my best to capture the style and quality in pictures. Very solid, adjusts height without issue, cast iron hardware with maker name that I cannot make out. there are old screw holes under the seat around the hardware, suggestive of original screws having to be re-drilled at some time. There are also 2 sections of trim missing around the sides of the seat. Very appealing simplistic design. Stands 18"22" high and weighs 15 pounds. From a clean pet and smoke free estate.
