The glass balls on the feet are free of anh cracks and chips. The stool has had the seat reglued and overall refinished at some point in its past and surfaces have a smooth sealed finish. There is a color variation on the base of the stool. Almost looks like shadowing in the finish, not sure what it is but it does look nice. I took lots of pictures of different sides so you can see. I have wiped the stool down and given it a hand rubbed wax finish, so it is ready to use. This item is estate fresh and ready for a new home. Very nice H. Holtzman& Son Piano Stool for sale. The conditions that I see are that on the swivel seat there appears to be a crack in the wood. And the brass pieces on the feet are loose and need to be tightened up, and the base part where the stool screws in is loose and would raise up from the base an inch or two. Maybe this is normal I do not know and wanted disclose what I see. Other than this the wood is in beautiful condition. The wood is either Mahogany or walnut and I would lean towards walnut, but I do not know for sure. This lovely antique piano or organ stool has a octagon shaped seat that is 15" diameter. It is covered with a burgundy needle point floral design. It has a heavy wooden base and is very sturdy. There is a small amount of veneer lost here and there on the base of show in the photos. The stool is 18 1/2 inches high at it's lowest and can go a lot higher. The Seat/Cushion and board has been replaced. But still very old. It has been painted from original gold. The velvet material is old and the black fringe is new. From what I've learned, the company started making piano/organ stools in the late 1800's thru the early 1900's. It swivels up and down. At its' lowest height it measures 19 1/2" tall.14 1/2" wide(seat top) IF you screw the height up it measures at LEAST 24" It's NOT perfect.looks like it had a split to the bottom that was repaired AND it looks like one spindle was re-glued and re-nailed at some point. Nicks, and some of the finish knocked off from normal use. There is a 2 inch piece of bead molding missing on the seat rim. The glass balls have flat spots worn on the bottom. The glue joints on the top of the seat are visible. The screw thread has wear, so the stool seat is a little wobbly. Very usable. The base is very solid. EXTREMELY RARE FIND* Early 1900's Schuermann Piano Stool in EXCELLENT Condition Stumbled upon this beauty at a recent estate sale. It is in excellent shape. Swivel goes up and down as if it were new and the wood is in excellent shape. It looks like it"may" have been repainted/resurfaced but I believe it is just slight wearing of the original surface. The hardware states"SCHUERMANN WASHINGTON. N.J. F.A. Schuermann was a co-founder of the New York Stool& Mfg Co started in the early 1900's along with W. Tonk and E.G. Tonk with only $25.000 in capital. I have been able to find very little beyond this but was told by an appraiser friend that it is an extremely rare stool and that he hadn't seen enough of them to even begin to give me an estimated price on it. The above information was found by an extensive search ... moreof old technical books, there is no information online about this stool or this company(at least the notorious Google couldn't find anything) so I am going to put this up with no reserve. I was allowed only 12 pictures so tried to get as much of every part of the stool as possible. The top is 14.5 inches in diameter. The height can be adjusted from 20 inches to about 24 inches. The top appears to have springs with stuffing inside that gives it a nice firm but comfortable feel. It doesn't go"flat" when pressing on it and it springs back fine. Wood legs are strong and secure. NO wood cracks, chips or missing pieces. The top embroidery is strong and secure. All fabric edge and bottom covering tacks/pins are secure. There's a very light 1/2" brown spot on the top and a couple light spots on the bottom fabric I'll let you tidy up. One leg may be a wee bit short and need a small shim to stabilize it. Seat is 14 1/4" diameter and dished in the middle for comfort. Signed Schuermann Washington NJ. Leg spread is 14" across the closest feet. 18 1/2" across the farthest. Glass/crystal balls have air bubbles and in good shape. Threads in the iron mounting mechanism look good and are not worn out and it adjusts nicely. Wood is probably oak. Joints are tight. Some shallow drying cracks. Seat has various colored woods but looks original. You can feel the joint where the wood changes color o the seat but it seems solid enough. I am going to remove the 4 screws that hold the iron to the bottom of the seat to hold the box size down for shipping. Very solid, adjusts height without issue, cast iron hardware with maker name that I cannot make out. there are old screw holes under the seat around the hardware, suggestive of original screws having to be re-drilled at some time. There are also 2 sections of trim missing around the sides of the seat. Very appealing simplistic design. Stands 18"22" high and weighs 15 pounds. From a clean pet and smoke free estate. The old dark varnish was put on it many years ago and i just can't tell but where it was worn it looks like oak. A joint or two are slightly loose but not enough to pop anything apart and do any gluing. You can see the joint seams in the top and ... moreunderside of the seat but they are actually made in 2 layers with the joints running 90 degrees apart so the seat is still strong. I also see some short cracks to the bottom part of the stool at the very top where the seat frame connects but everything feels tight. Columbus Ohio. It has an ice cream chair type base. There are 2 places where the wood pieces join that are slightly apart. This is not cracks in the wood, just shrinking of the joints. This stool has not been refinished, it has it's original finish! It is just a beautiful original American Oak made piece! It is about 19 1/2" tall, 14 1/2" across the wood top.
