Bronze Plated Art Nouveau Cast Iron Smoking Bench/Stool
A very romantic bronze plated cast iron bench with arm rests. In a French style. The cabriole legs on each side support the 12"x24" seat(upholstered in an antique woven botanical tapestry cloth) and become the arms on each side. Intricately carved, these arms have openings to hold the original ashtrays, one of which is still present on this piece. The style of scrolls and graphic floral patterns are very art nouveau. There is some aging of this piece. But nothing affecting the quality of the piece- mostly some light wear and fading, easily cleaned. Probably dates to somewhere around the 1920s- 1930s. Antique Oak Chautaugua Industrial Art Desk with Matching Bench School Learning
Antique oak Lewis and Myers school desk/learning center. Dated 1923 and manufactured in Valparaiso. Indiana. I also have the accompanying seat that completes this set. The top of the desk features an American Resources Map with area, population, mining, and manufacturing. From what I can tell the paper is cloth, somewhat distressed with a few minor stains. Top measures 21 1/2"X 17 1/4" Unopened height is 26 1/2" tall and stands on 2 adjustable legs that are adjusted by thumb screws. The desk also features a slide out drawer, desk top also slides rear-ward to reveal yet another desk top. The first top with map and sliding top is removable or locked in place with a sliding pin to lock in place. The Oak bench measures 15 1/4" in length by 7 1/2" in width, and is also adjustable in height styled exactly like the desk ... morewith thumb screw type adjustment. In the full up position it measures 14" full down position is approx. 10" in height. When the top is opened it reveals operating instructions for each child, shelf type compartments on both sides and a compartment in the center for writing materials I would guess. Atop the opened shelf area, or what would be the underside of the sliding desk top is cloth paper with the name"The Chautaugua Industrial Art Desk" a plan to promote the culture of work and play among children in the home" with a scenic lake front and boats in the backround. This cloth paper has various lessons which are printed on rollers. The first illustration is line drawings, various shapes and sizes.It is copyrighted 1913 by the Powers and Myers Co. The second illustration is of various animals, shadow style, blocks and circles, also shadow style. The third is a short illustration of the 3 bears story, an apple, hen on nest, pearl necklace, basket a woven rug and the procedure to complete. This is a very cool vintage foot stool. I'm not sure of the top and what it is- is it carpeting or something else? It is in folk art primitive condition. The legs and piece are solid. Purchased at a local estate from the 62 yr old granddaughter of the original owner. This piece is ALL original with Velvet Chenille upholstery. Pix taken in natural light with color true to depiction. Bench measures 18 1/2 high and 32" long. The seat is 11 1/2" wide and very sturdy. Cast iron frame with a bronze patina wash. Have not been able to find any info on the signed manufacture of Congress Specialty co, Chicago as depicted in pix#s 9& 10. There is another marking on inside leg of 39 G.S in pix# 6. Pix# 11 shows a little rust on bottom of one leg. Upholstery is still sturdy. Does have a few places where Her cat chose to sharpen her claws so there are a few loose threads. But no major shredding. The ashtrays have aluminum upper and copper bottoms. The bottoms have a few dings as depicted in pix#5. Do Not know if ashtrays ... moreoriginally had handles. Seeing two small holes on top of them, i asked the granddaughter, but she never recalled seeing handles on them. With french Cabriole legs and Art Nouveau styling this is truly a rare beauty from the turn of the century. Please look at all pix enlarged as this is 90% of the description. In great antique condition with NO odors or stains. But was in cat lover's home on for those of you with allergies. Look carefully and decide for yourself because your opinion may differ from mine. This is a Wonderful Old Piece. I am not sure if it would be considered Art Nouveau or Art Deco. My best guess as to age would be 1910-1930. The base appears to be cast iron and it is a heavy/sturdy piece. It is 19" high from the floor to the top of the piece. From the floor to the top of the cushion. It is 16& 1/2" It is 19" Long by 13" Wide. I do not know the history of this piece so cannot say if it has been around pets or smoke. I consider it to be in vey good condition however there is some paint loss/fading that does not affect the overall good looks of this Unique piece. The Metal is a shade of Green with Ivory. Here we have a wonderful ~ ART DECO FIGURAL GREYHOUND DOG MOTIF BENCH ~ This is an original from the 1920's- 1930's era. It is a very nice quality. And looks to be bronze plating over cast iron. It is exceptionally sturdy, quite heavy, and very well made. The bench measures 36 inches long by 13 inches deep and stands 19 inches tall. It has a fabulous Art Deco motif, with the stretched and relaxed, greyhound dogs on each end. It is not all that often you find nice and original Art Deco period benches, and this one is much nicer than most. The over all condition is very good with the exception that it will need to be reupholstered with the fabric of your choice. It still has the old mohair fabric seat. It would be such and easy job to recover and very nice that you get to choose the design of the fabric you like. ANTIQUE c.1920s ART DECO BEAUX ARTS BENCH VANITY STOOL SEVILLE STUDIOS, GILDED
This is a very rare piece and may be one-of-a-kind. This art deco style bench. Circa 1920's, was made by Seville(Metal Art) Studios, Inc. Creators of Beau-Metal Art Objects" of Cleveland. Ohio. The company was well-known for its metal works at that time. Pieces consisted primarily of decorative items and small pieces of furniture. As a point of reference regarding their pieces in todays market, a small, bronzed cast-iron table made by this company recently sold at the on-line antique store, 1stDibs. And was listed for $3500. This piece is made of cast iron. I believe the cast iron originally had been gilded(covered in a thin layer of gold) Which was popular in the 20's. When I discovered the piece, it was covered with rust( see last two pictures) and the only remnants of the original finish were a few minuscule places that had ... morea gold. Patinated look. The upholstered seat sported a cracked and torn, yellow vinyl covering. Underneath this vinyl, I found the original fabric of faded(and shredded) red velvet. The mark"S11" is cast on each leg. Seville's coded makers' mark. The original metal ID tag(see picture) is still affixed to the underside of the seat. No attempt was made to sand. Or restore, the cast iron beyond soaking it in a solution of white vinegar and water to dissolve the worst of the rust from the surface. This left the naturally-aged uneven and pitted surfaces. The cast iron base was painted with a single layer of gold leaf paint. The paint used contains real gold(paint sells for $10 per ounce) and was used as an alternative to using gold leaf sheets. The seat was reupholstered with new padding and covered with a dusty-rose/red fabric woven with golden dragonflies-a popular decorative icon during the 1920's. Intending to keep the bench myself. I did the work. Because there is little work required to recover the seat, one could have a professional reupholster it inexpensively, if desired. Vintage wrought iron piano foyer or vanity bench art deco red velvet NICE!
This is an exceptional vintage wrought iron bench. The iron was sprayed with furniture polish to show the details in the pictures but its not as shiny when it dries. The bench has a unique curve. The velvet is in good condition for the age and is clean. Nice large nail heads accent the red velvet. It measures 42inches long. Bench seat is12 inches wide and it is about 18 inches from the ground to the top of bench. The bench is sturdy and will definitely make a statement in any decor.
