Wonderful Antique PORCELAIN PETRUS REGOUT & CO - SPHINX BOWL - HONC DESIGN 1914
This is a wonderful antique earthenware/ ceramic bowl. This bowl was made by Petrus Regout& Co. in Maastricht. Holland. This company worked very hard to become a known quality porcelain/ ceramic company in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The company changed its name a couple times during its rise to power. It used the sphinx symbol in its logo for years and in the late 1800's, changed its name to"The Sphinx" This bowl is the Honc design and dates to somewhere near 1914. This is a nice vintage bowl with the oriental design on the outside and inside. It has a pattern of pagoda style buildings, trees, people and water repeated on each side. the inside has a geometric pattern in between pagoda buildings four times around the inside edge of the bowl. It also has a round picture of the outside design in the bottom center ... moreof the inside, but only in dark green color. The rest of the design, inside and out, has other colors in it: rusty red, dark green, yellow gold and a light green. The bottom is marked with the sphinx picture logo and the words, Petrus Regout& Co. Maastrict, Honc, Made in Holland, with the numbers 37& 8. This bowl measures 8 1/4" across the top and 4 1/2" deep. It is in very good condition for its age: No major chips, cracks or breaks, there is some minor crazing- alittle on the inside of the bowl and the base bottom. There is some discoloration around the top edge and small spots down into the inside of the bowl. Other than that, the bowl is strong, sturdy and in good condition. I have included several pictures to show the condition better. This is a lovely antique Petrus Regout& Co. bowl that would make a great addition to any collection or a wonderful display piece. I am not an expert in antique ceramics or earthenware. So I am describing it to the best of my ability. Please ask questions if you have them. Thank you for looking. This is a great example of late 1800's Dutch Pottery. And was made by the Petrus Regout Company in Maastricht Holland sometime after 1836 when the pottery was founded and 1878 when they started using the"Sphinx" logo and name. Its possible it was made after 1878 and they used the older stamp on it because the pattern dates to that period. But either way its a mid-late 1800's piece of pottery and in remarkable condition considering that age. The pattern is called Alpine and features an intricate"basket-weave" design. The color is like a Rusty or Brick Red/Brown or coppery luster. You will find a piece in this pattern in the Brooklyn Museum and they date this pattern to 1870-1890 Condition: This is a mush bowl and in excellent Condition. There is no chips. Hairlines, or cracks. You will see by the photo's provided ... moresome areas that looked rubbed or worn but this is in the transfer pattern and under the glaze. The transfers on these pieces are not perfect and maybe that is what adds so much to their character. This bowl is in the pattern of"VLINDER, which means"butterfly" in Dutch, transfer-printed earthenware. There are three butterflies outside of the bowl and one butterfly inside of the bowl. The bowl stand is not included in the listing. Maastricht. Holland, was the city where Petrus Regout established the De Sphinx pottery in 1836. De Sphinx operated under the name Petrus Regout& Co. until 1899. The firm was noted for its transfer-printed earthenware. The bowl stands about 4 inches high and is a bit more than 7 1/2 inches in diameter at the rim. There are no chips or cracks, but there is some age crazing to the glaze on the outside. Offered is this very nice antique Petrus Regout& Co Maastrich Pajong Bowl Made in Holland Condition: The bowl is not unstable. But a crack can be seen one one side where the bowl meets the base. This crack does show. But less so, on the inside of the bowl as well. Please look at all photos very carefully! Black and tan transfer. The black and tan color is in fairly good condition on the outside with some fading. The black is in pretty good condition on the inside. But the tan is missing except for one spot on the rim inside. Measures 7 3/4" diameter at the rim and stands 4 1/4" high. USA shipping only.
