A stunning polychrome transferware café au lait(hot frothy milk) bowl was made as an elegant and whimsical drinking bowl or perhaps made simply as a gorgeous decorative whimsy. The versatile and attractive form is similar to English waste bowls. The bowl is transfer printed in a brilliant royal blue. And decorated with hand clobbering in red, light green, yellow and blue enamels. The bowl stands about 3 1/4" tall and measures about 5 3/4" in diameter with a shaped pedestal base. The exterior of the bowl is boldly decorated with a series of four cartouches alternately depicting game birds(pheasant and quail) Interspersed with alternating ... morewild rose and shasta daisy. Four additional cartouches repeat on the interior rim of the bowl and a modified image of quails on the inside bottom. The stunning decoration is lavishly applied inside and out, leaving little white space on the bowl. The bowl is reminiscent of the transferware made in the Staffordshire region of England but this particular piece was made in Sarreguemines or another of the faienceries in the Luneville region of France. The underside of the bowl bears the maker's mark"Made in France PV" PV denotes the retailer's trademark. The bowl is a gorgeous tribute to the French love of nature and the exotic. It is in great condition. With clean age related glaze flaking along the top edge no chips cracks or repairs. Transfer seams, kiln dust and stilt marks, and other minor manufacturing imperfections, original to the making. A stunning piece to add to your collection.
