Antique,ceramic,1890's Scarlet-colored "Cherry" toothpaste crock jar pot lid
You are bidding on an antique. Ceramic, Cherry" toothpaste container or"pot lid" as they are known. This one dates to the late Victorian era( 1890's)around 125 years old! The"cherry" in these antique advertising jars: The term"cherry" had nothing to do with the flavor of the toothpaste! In order to brighten up the paste inside the jar. Retailers of the time, added"carmine" a colorant, which gave the paste a pink or red-ish look to it. The only thing that associated the paste of the day. With the"Cherry" fruit. Was the color! That is why certain manufacturers of toothpaste in this era, would advertise on their lids, no artificial additives" i.e. no carmine in our paste" Anyway.
